I always tried to interview early or late in the day so I wouldn't have to take the entire day off. I'd use the doctor's appointment excuse then.

@bluestriped bee: if your employer does not require a sick note, then i wouldn't worry. if they get really obnoxious and nitpicky, say that you had a bad period, or, awful diarrhea. they'll stop asking for details :) lol.

I would just say I have an appointment, but I never use the Dr's appointment excuse (and use sick) because I don't know if it is just my state or not but if you are gone for longer than I think 2 hours they can legally ask you what the appointment is for and ask for a note. I do think your whole day off changes things though, so I think your plan sounds good :happy: Good luck!

So for me, I'm planning on getting a job on the east coast. So I would be out for the full day or more. I'm going to try to ask for the interview to be on a Monday so I have Sunday to travel.

I'm trying to save up vacations because that's the better thing to do but I think I will have to use sick days. Maybe just a 'not feeling well today' is vague enough.

I just dealt with this - I would have used vacation but we are actually on a vacation lockdown at work due to a huge project. And I had 4 interviews within a 2 week period! I tried to schedule them either at the very beginning or end of the workday and then just said I was coming in late/leaving early for "an appointment." My work is pretty flexible though as long as we are putting in our hours we can take some time to deal with personal stuff.

I am a terrible liar so I am like @purpletulips: personal business. BUT you have to know your boss -- some will be fine with that and some will ask what you have to do. If I were to say "doctor's appointment," I know she would be asking if I was OK and whatnot, so....

I have scheduled them after work, 5:30 interview time or taken PTO. If I had vacation and sick days I would use vacation. I think sick days should only be used when you are truly sick or have a doctor's appointment.

If you're coming in late or missing time that you can't just say was lunch I'd use vacation time. I'm super cautious about sick leave.

I would just say you have a personal appointment, without details. I had to run out yesterday to buy a new shirt due to a coconut oil incident and just said I had to run an errand, was gone about an hour but worked through my lunch to make up the time.

I was usually hourly or had flexible work schedules, so I came up with an excuse like a doctor's appointment (or what worked best- a vet appointment for a sick pup, because that can be last minute) and make up the time or not get paid for it. My first job was less flexible, I occasionally went on lunch and if it went long I blamed it on slow service and then worked through lunch the next day to "make it up" even though I was salaried.

If the only time for interviews in is the middle of the morning I will use personal or vacation time and you should not have to provide a reason for that. If you just want to come in late, I would say you have an appointment. And technically you don't even have to give up that information. There's no reason they need to know how you are spending time when you are not at work.

I have used both vacation/personal and sick in the past. Most stressful was a job interview for a different department at my work! Boss was gone for the day, but I had to tell everyone else I was headed to a "meeting" and hope no one caught me going in or out of the interview!

I haven't done this, but I'd say a doctor's appointment as well. And then I'd try to make up the time either later in the day or throughout the week.

@bluestriped bee: exciting!! :)

Sick day.
Doctor's appointment in the afternoon.
Or...if you can schedule it a couple of days out...just take a vacation or PTO day. "My parents are coming into town unexpectedly..."

I have never had to make up an excuse, I scheduled it around my work.mi didn't feel like it was fair for my employer to be paying me (through sick days or annual leave) while I look for another job.

I have left my jobs on great terms though.
