This is kind of funny. With my first, I had tons of energy, I did prenatal yoga and walked a lot. With my second, I was so weak and fatigued that I laid on the couch a majority of the first and second trimester. My first, accomplished all his milestones early and my second took longer (no delays, still on time but definitely not ahead, yet).

@anandam: I've been doing spin classes regularly for a couple of years and I love it. But even if you are new to it, it is very adaptable to individual ability. The bikes have a knob that lets you adjust the resistance and the instructor will give general directions on how light or heavy to make it - but it is all relative to your own perceived exertion. So you can make it as low intensity as you like. Since I've been pregnant, I've definitely taken it down a notch or two  . I make sure to drink tons of water and take breaks (turn down the resistance) when I need to.

Also (in any workout class) if you let the instructor know you are preggers they will usually keep an eye on you and may have some suggestions on how to modify exercises.

@dc yoga bee, LMAO. The babies just bob around in there, totally cushioned by the fluid. Probably puts them to sleep. I know E was super inactive whenever I worked out, but would go crazy when I stopped

Dr. Clapp's Exercising throughout your Pregnancy goes into a LOT of these types of studies on pregnant women and the effect on the fetus and the babies, if anybody wants an in depth, longer read. Greater oxygen flow due to more veins, larger placentas, better scores on intelligence tests at 1 and 5 years, the baby has a stronger heart and is better suited to a changing environment. He also states that 3x/week, moderate to hard is all you need (his book also goes into athletes or vigorous exercisers who are pregnant, which I appreciated)

I could go on and on. If you're interested, READ THE BOOK. It's so interesting and I loved all the clinical studies.

I get out of breath walking to the fridge- does that count as moderate exercise? Baby #2 will be a damn genius thanks to his toddler big brother- chasing him is a heck of a workout ;)

I guess it's all about perspective and what is defined as exercise- I sure didn't feel very active with my first compared to my usual activity level, but my boss said I was the most active she's ever seen a pregnant lady. Being at work helped a lot since I never really thought about it, I just ran around like a crazy person.

How interesting!

To be honest, though, I was in a lot of pain through my entire pregnancy (and it just got worse as it went on). By the end any movement had me in tears! So the most I got was 3-4 miles of walking a day, 5-6 days a week (which now that I think about it isn't a small amount!). At a quicker past at first but a slow waddle by the end. And I tried to do prenatal yoga a few times a week but it hurt too much :(

I saw an article today about exercise during pregnancy and its impact on infant brain development and wanted to share.

http://medicalxpress.com/news/2013-11-pregnancy-newborn-brain.html

To summarize: As little as 20 minutes of moderate exercise three times per week during pregnancy enhances the newborn child's brain development, according to researchers at the University of Montreal and its affiliated CHU Sainte-Justine children's hospital. This head-start could have an impact on the child's entire life.

Wanted to see what all of you think!
