MRI is not like CT/X-ray and even if X-ray is necessary it is allowed.

@mom2b2agirl: Chiropractic work isn't good for people with herniated discs or else I'd love to go get an alignment 8-/

I see a chiropractor who specializes in pregnant women. I love her and dont know what i would do without her! I have had a bad back for almost 10 years now so was nervous getting pregnant. Worth every penny!

@Clementine: Heat/ice has never done much for me. I'm interested to see what the physical therapist recommends since literally all my "normal" exercises would be near impossible with a pregnant belly.

I know this sounds silly, but icing, heat, and definitely doing yoga has helped me. I've had chronic lower back pain (not as severe as yours) for 4 years now. Also putting two tennis balls in a sock and massaging my back has always helped.

@Mrs. Bee: I would, but I'm not sure if it's an option for us right now financially. Military healthcare doesn't usually cover "alternative medicine" so it would be a significant out of pocket expense.

I actually had acupuncture in middle school when I had such severe sinus problems that I was going deaf and it totally helped. But, my health insurance back then covered it...8-/

@BabyBoecksMom: I'm amazed my OB didn't bring up a support band; maybe the physical therapist will? If not, I'll bring it up at my next appointment. I'm only 25 weeks along though.

@skibobrown: You actually sound a lot like me! My right hip was almost 2 inches higher than my left when we discovered the degenerative subluxation last year, by the end of physical therapy it was only about 3/4 of an inch higher. Now that everything down there is loosening up in preparation for labor I can only imagine where my hips are! lol And if I DON'T move around I'm in much more pain than if I do. The most comfortable position for me is actually standing in sneakers, and if my legs get tired I like to lean up against something. Whenever someone hears I have back problems their first reaction is "sit down!" and I have to explain to them that sitting really sucks, lol.

Yikes! Just want to say good luck. This does not sound fun. I have struggled with low-back and hip pain throughout most of my adult life. My hip joints are basically misaligned from when I was born, and a surgical fix isn't really possible at this point in time. I also find that lots of exercise, especially ab and back work helps my back pain, but of course this hasn't been possible during pregnancy. My sciatica has been acting up big time, and I've found that for me there's a delicate balance each day between too much activity and too little -- each can aggravate my back. The worst part has been sleeping. I wake up every morning with really bad hip and back pain, and the only way to make it better is to get up and start walking around. I really hope PT works wonders for you!!

My back is not as bad as yours but it's still bad. I have been stretching A LOT and wearing a maternity support band since the beginning of my 3rd trimester, and it really does help.

I have struggled with back issues since I was 17 (I'm almost 24 now). It was when I was 17 that I herniated two discs in my lower back - my doctors advised me NOT to have surgery since my sister happened to herniate the exact same two discs (trampoline accident), had the surgery, and the discs just re-herniated. I just did intensive physical therapy for almost a year and was able to manage the pain.

Last year my back was getting REALLY painful again, so I went and so a specialist. Turns out the existing herniation lead to "degenerative subluxation" in my lower spine. Basically a "normal" spine would look like an S from the side, mine looked like a question mark. Again, I did 6 months of intense physical therapy and I was able to manage the pain.

Well pregnancy is doing horrible things to my back! And I can't do my normal exercises anymore because I'm pregnant (they're all ab exercises, basically) and my belly just doesn't do that anymore. And I've been bad and haven't been stretching properly. Well, it got to the point where sometimes I can't even carry my own weight so I brought it up at my OB appointment yesterday.

The doctor did some basic reflex tests and turns out I have a reverse reflex on my right side (instead of my leg kicking forward, it swings back) which is a sign that the herniation is back and worse than ever. We want to avoid doing any other diagnostic tests (MRI, x-ray, etc) since I don't want to expose the baby to that kind of radiation so I'm just going to start physical therapy again ASAP.

On top of that, I need to meet with the anesthesiologist sooner rather than later because herniated discs and epidurals don't really get along. Even though I would LIKE to have a natural childbirth (mainly because of my existing back issues) if I change my mind the anesthesiologist is gonna have to know my spine inside and out in order to be able to give it to me. And if I lose feeling in either of my legs I have to go straight to labor and delivery because it could trigger labor and I might not even know it. It's all just really overwhelming...

So, has anyone else struggled with serious back problems during their pregnancy? Did you have to do physical therapy? What the hell do they have pregnant ladies do during physical therapy, lol?
