@melisslp - he says about 175 words and can speak in a five word sentence. That may seem like a lot, but I'm just worried that he isn't grasping all the words I'm trying to teach him. When I'm trying to get him to say something new, I will direct him to look at my mouth to see how to say the word. I will also try to use the words more frequently and ask him to repeat me, but he doesn't really try to do it.

@mrbee - thanks so much for the recommendation, they are in my Amazon cart right now!

I could give you many suggestions (I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist), but I have a couple of questions for you first; How many words does he have in his vocabulary? (Write them down in a notebook as he communicates). How many words does he typically string together?

@Katm558: awesome!!

Charlie loved these:
http://www.amazon.com/First-Touch-Feel-Picture-Cards/dp/0756615186

We got a bunch of other flashcards from the same company: the animals one, and "things that go"! He looooves those two even now!

Bee is doing a guide on flashcards at some point...

@mrbee, he's the same age as Charlie. Charlie was actually born on my DS's due date (25 months ago!).

@mrbee - which ones do you use? I've looked into that, but can't seem to find ones for his age, they all seem too advanced.

Have you tried out any flashcards? They have been huge for filling in Charlie's vocabulary!

Thanks @cvbee! I'm definitely going to try those things. You kinda sparked an idea in me that I hadn't thought of before. I'm a SAHM and was on bed rest for five months, and just had my second son two months ago. We've been coupes up in the house and haven't been able to interact with others a whole lot. I think I should muster up the courage to take both kids out somewhere where DS can play and interact with others.

Thanks for your help!

Talking with him a lot is great. Ask him questions and when he asks about something explain it. Use advanced vocabulary and explain what things are to him. Even just being around adults who are talking to one another helps too, but giving him opportunities to talk is very important. Stop while you are reading and ask questions. Sing songs together and say nursery rhymes too!

It's great that you are thinking about this. Also good that you know that you 'shouldn't' compare to others. Each child develops at their own rate.

How do you work on your LO's vocabulary?

I try reading to my 25 month old son as often as I can, and try to have discussions with him and tell him what I'm doing, but it just doesn't seem to be working. He speaks in sentences, but I feel like he doesn't say as much as other toddlers his age(I know, I'm totally guilty of comparing him to others!)

Anyone have any tips?
