Interesting, thanks for your input ladies. I've had friends move abroad as expats (to Asia) and come back after a year or two because they said it was surprisingly lonely but they were all single. I've met all of my mommy friends here through meet up/new mom groups so I'm hoping to find similar groups there, if we go. The thought of moving abroad is exciting and scary!

I agree with Mrs. Jacks. I think if you make an effort to get out there, it becomes much less lonely. I'm not sure about HK, but in Tokyo there is a large ex-pat community. There are a lot of meetup groups as well as pregnancy and parenting groups. I'd imagine it would be quite similar there.

I was an expat at one time (in Africa) and I was lonely for awhile. I would think that having children would help facilitate meeting people.

I spent a lot of time forcing myself to join things... So I joined the Hash House Harriers even though I don't love running and I joined an aerobics class, even though that's not my thing!

I had a really hard time meeting people until I had LO. Since then, I've meet some really great girls through the children's centres.

We somewhat relocated to a new city and I feel like I've been lucky enough to make friends pretty quickly here, mostly through activities related to DD.
DH was offered to relocate to Asia through his company and my head is now spinning. I know it's selfish to think this way since the relocation would be a pretty significant promotion for him and would present huge opportunities to move up within his company, but I'm so scared about the prospect of being lonely if we move. This would probably be a semi-permanent move, not just for a couple of years.
So to the expat moms out there...do you enjoy being an expat? How easy/difficult has it been to meet new people and to integrate? Would especially love to hear thoughts on those in HK but am interested in hearing about anyone's experiences!
