I’ve heard amazing things about David Klass or Jewels by Grace. If you have a certification you’ll get more for it. If you’re just talking about a loose ring with no papers try a second hand shop. I’ve gotten more than I thought for pieces I don’t wear anymore....

@Littlebit7: I sent out a request to Mondiamo (Blue Nile's resell arm) to see what they would quote me, but haven't heard back from them yet. I appreciate the feedback, and will definitely check out the site, thank you! I'm definitely still looking for inspiration.

I think you will discover you will lose SO much in the sale of the ring. Have you talked to shop that would buy it from you and gotten a quote?
We were shocked at how little my sisters diamond would sell for (actually, I wasn’t shocked but she was). The appraisal value /replacement value was $20k. The resale or market value was $5-6k
I started following a Boston based jeweler called m Flynn (you can look her up on insta). She does amazing transformations with old jewelry and center stones. You might get some inspiration to turn it into something you love and wear daily. (Mflynnjewelry)

@Mrs. Carrot: if that's the case and you'll wear something more understated I'd talk to a small local jeweler and see if they will design you something in trade. You'll loose some value but won't be out any cash and will get back something you'll actually wear

@Mrs. Carrot: is your so ok with you selling your ring? You mentioned it was not to your taste but something he picked based on cultural preferences so I'd definitely make sure he's not going to be crushed if you sell it

@lamariniere: I spoke to a few family-owned jewelry stores in the area and all gave me the same advice - buy a new setting, which I'm not really inclined to do given the price (the stone is just under a carat, so the settings are at minimum 1K and up), or try selling. I've been browsing Etsy to see if I find a setting that's more reasonable and understated, but haven't come upon anything yet, and I don't want to turn it into a pendant since I don't wear necklaces.

@Ajsmommy: I thought about it and spoke with a jeweler about what it would take, and basically I'd either have to put the center stone into a new setting, which is pretty pricey, or make it into a necklace, which I don't wear due to skin sensitivities. So it seems like the best option might be to sell it, but I was thinking maybe folks have used smaller designers or Etsy or something to redesign rings. To be totally honest, I don't have a huge amount of attachment to the ring - it's a lot larger than I would have chosen for myself, but my husband insisted (cultural thing on his end), so I'm fine letting it go, I just wouldn't want it to be a total loss.

@PurplePeony: I'm not sure about the setting's origins, my guess is that it's a modern make of an antique design. Ideally I'd like to sell all of it - the setting, which is just heavier and doesn't really work with my life/style anymore, and the diamond because I just can't justify spending more money on a new ring that I'd probably only wear occasionally. I'd rather not do it person to person, so I'm looking around at local jewelry shops but just aren't sure where to start.

Would you be interested in using the stone for something else, kind of like @lamariniere: suggested? I inherited my mom and grama's wedding sets and I used the diamonds and the gold to make a pendant that I wear ever day! I love it!! I had it dipped so the gold appears silver and it wasn't that expensive bc I used all the gold and diamonds that I already had. I just had to pay for the design and time to make it.

Is the setting a true antique or a modern reproduction? And are you thinking of selling the ring as-is or unsettting the center stone? I can recommend a couple reputable dealers in antique jewelry who take rings, stones, and settings on consignment, or you could have a local antique/estate jewelry store take a look and see if they think it would sell. Some places will also take on modern reproduction settings and well-cut modern stones, but not all. If you want to sell it person-to-person, I also know of a couple sites dedicated to jewelry sales. I’ve never sold anything there but I’ve bought a couple things (inexpensive ones, though). There’s always some risk doing it that way but I trust it more than trying to sell through Craigslist or eBay or something.

Would you be interested in using the stone(s?) to make a pendant or earrings? My dad is a jeweler so I kind of grew up around this. If you want a new ring that isn’t custom, most jewelers will order a setting you like and reset the stone and make (minor) modifications to the setting. You could inquire about trading in too. Like you said, if you sell it outright, you aren’t going to get the price paid back. I would recommend dealing with an independent or family owned business rather than a chain.

Not sure if this is the right category for this, but we'll go with it :)

Wondering if anyone has successfully sold or redesigned their engagement ring. I am trying to decide what to do with mine and am stuck on ideas. I have an antique setting that I've basically just outgrown, and because it's not a set with my wedding ring, I haven't worn it in years, so it's just sitting collecting dust (and I'm paying insurance on it). I looked into a redesign, but most jewelers are talking upwards of $1K and basically a new setting. I'm not a big jewelry person anymore, and since the stone itself is decent quality, I was thinking about selling it and just adding the money to savings/house projects (realizing that I won't get the same $$ we paid for it). Wondering if anyone's done anything with theirs and has vendors/sites/ideas to share. I'm not even sure where to start. Thanks!
