Thanks for the feedback, ladies. That's interesting. I also did a saliva hormone test with a naturapath that showed I actually have low DHEA and cortisol. I'm not sure I want to be suppressing my adrenal hormones with Dexamethasone.

I took Dexamethasone during my IVF cycle (stopped right before transfer). I have no idea why, really, but it is standard at my RE's office for IVF. I had no side effects from it (at least not above and beyond all the other stuff happening to my body during IVF). If you're concerned, I would definitely call your RE office and ask for an explanation of why your dr thinks you need it. Good luck!

Yeah, dexamethazone like @lizzywiz: says is a drug I know of that is used on asthmatics. It's a steroid but can be used for other treatment, too. It's an old drug that has gone generic so it shouldn't be too expensive now. Probably relatively cheap. Maybe going to Walmart to get it filled might make it cheaper if you are worried about costs.

I have heard of the use of steroids like dex or prednisone for fertility aid. But don't know exactly why it's used.

We get this for my daughter's breathing problems and it is cheap, but we have insurance. Maybe I was just uninformed, but I have never heard of Dexamethasone being used as the go-to drug for PCOS, which I have. So I got curious, did some googling and I guess it is!
"Another example of the use of specific medication occurs in women who may have symptoms of excessive hair growth, acne, and lack of a menstrual cycle due to excessive adrenal hormones. These women can be treated specifically with a cortisone-like drug such as dexamethasone, usually taken at bedtime. Again, this treatment is specific, effective, relatively inexpensive, and free of side effects with short-term treatment." http://www.reproductivepartners.com/fertility-education/infertility-causes-treatment.html

I haven't chatted with my RE in a bit (because DH and I were going to try to do our own DTD thing for 6 months) but he did mention that he want to check my OAR again in January. So I called to schedule that yesterday.

The nurse practitioner called and in a voicemail telling me that they wanted me to pick up a prescription for Dexamethasone. They said it would help balance my hormones.

I need to call them and find out more about this, but in the meantime- Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm also doubtful my insurance will cover it so I have no idea how much it might cost.
