At 9 months the Urologist said he has pretty much grown out of it and we don't need regular ultrasounds anymore. </p> <p>I was with him in the OR until he was asleep and then after the doctor met with us following the very short procedure we had to wait maybe 15-20 minutes. They brought us back to reunite with him in a recovery room and my stage five clinger (that won't even let grandma who he sees at least once a week hold him) was coming down the hallway fully awake in a nurse's arms just looking around happy as a clam. He nursed for awhile and we were released. Once we were home he was just his regular old self. He may have taken an extra nap. </p> <p>I spent so much time agonizing over it. I felt guilty like I was being really vain to even consider it and I liked the idea of him deciding if and when he would have it removed. I decided if we could spare him potential embarrassment about it we should just do it while he is at an easier age to do it (not 3😛). My daughter has that, as well and everyone is hopeful she grows out of it. Interestingly, we knew baiut the kidney issues in utero and monitored them, plus my polyhydramnios.</p> <p>I'm really not happy with the idea of general for an elective procedure. The scar is the least of my worries, it would be much better to have a scar than this thing dangling by her ear. She basically followed our lead about taking action, I had to ask at the 6 month checkup for the referral. I got the impression she thought it was a little early but she was happy to refer us. Also, when he was younger she was most concerned with the health of his kidneys and out of an abundance of caution they were screened and there was a minor issue that he has since grown out of so she was not concerned about the actual cosmetic issue of the ear tag at the time.</p> <p>We just had one appointment with the ENT before the procedure which is when he explained the options. He said we could do it surgically now with 10 minute procedure under anesthesia (I don't know a lot about anesthesia, but I think it was a lighter anesthesia there were no tubes just gas). The other option was to do it in the office when our son was old enough to sit still enough to be numbed with a novocaine shot and tolerate the procedure completely awake. I can't remember if he gave a specific age for when this might be appropriate, I want to say the doctor may have even said 10 years old.</p> <p>I asked what the doctor recommended or what most families do in these situations. He said that most would have it removed before starting school and that kids in that age range are not old enough to have the procedure done in the office.</p> <p>I would have preferred doing it when he was older but I wanted to get it done before he would remember people pointing it out and I did not want to do it when he was older like 2 or 3 years old (can you tell we are in the throes of a 3 year old) so we just went with it now. The worst part was when the 3 year old referenced above woke him up 2 hours earlier than planned the morning of the procedure and we had to keep him happy for a little longer than anticipated. It isn't something we took lightly but it was the right choice for us.</p> <p>I think our son's was fairly small? I can't remember the doctors measurement. It is in a spot where it can often be tied off but in his case it was a little too thick. If he was a girl I think we would have considered more seriously waiting until she was older as her hair could have covered it up eventually. I am not at all suggesting that is what works for other families, just our personal thought process.</p> <p>Also, one thing I didn't consider before was the scar. Right now it is very visible. I think it was around 2 days old. Ped said it’d cut the circulation off and sure enough after about a week it fell off. It was a hard decision obviously considering the anesthesia. My ped let us choose whether we wanted to be referred to a plastic surgeon or ENT after he was 6 months and we went with ENT. We could have waited to have it done in the office when he was mature enough to handle a shot of novocaine but that sounds scary to me even for an older child. </p> <p>I spent a lot of time obsessing about this decision. I'm happy with our choice. I'm forgetting a lot here. Although I'm not sure how cartlidge-y ear tags are, which could cause problems with numbing abilities. </p> <p>But, my son was circumcized in office at 8 days old; the doctor gave him Tylenol and a binkie with sugar water and he did great. Now I'm concerned about everything that will have to happen to remove it now that she's older.
