I have a friend who dealt with this. It stressed her out, but she just took her DD to a couple follow-up appointments after birth and she was totally fine. I hope it goes the same for you!

I have a follow-up ultrasound for this in a few weeks (initially borderline on our anatomy scan at 20weeks). FX that everything looks good for your LO after birth!

@sweetooth: Thanks! I'm sorta feeling the same way. I'm glad we know to check up on it, but I'm also feeling like if we hadn't had an ultrasound last week just to check her size we'd be blissfully unaware right now!

@SeptMomma12: I dealt with this for my 1st son. It was marked on the early anatomy scan and was monitored throughout my pregnancy. I don't remember the size measurement but it increased during my pregnancy. So we had an ultrasound done while we were still in the hospital just after birth. And then we had to follow-up several months later, have another ultrasound, and at that time everything looked just fine. So we didn't end up having to do any surgery, or anything.

I will say I wish I didn't have the stress of that knowledge during my pregnancy. But I'm thankful for the ability to be prepared when the little one is born to check for anything like that which wouldn't be apparent right away.

I hope it all clears up for you and your baby and it's not too stressful

@MrsF: Thank you. They said it's a little strange this isn't showing up until so late since it's usually noted on the anatomy scan, but it sounds like we will follow the same plan. I just spoke with our pediatrician and she said they will do an ultrasound while she's in the hospital, but had the same caution that it might not be 100% accurate because of the extra fluid post-birth.

My DS had dilated kidneys (hydronephrosis, I think) on fetal ultrasound. I never heard the term pyelectasis but Google seems to say it's the same thing. I had a few extra ultrasounds and it was almost resolved by birth. They still did an ultrasound in the hospital after he was born, although I was told that often they don't because babies are still so full of extra fluid immediately after birth. The ultrasound was fine and our pediatrician didn't think that it warranted any more follow up. My ob told me that one of her kids had this and it didn't resolve after birth and her daughter had to have a stent placed to fix it. Basically she was saying that even in the worst case scenario it wasn't a huge life-changing problem.

I hope everything goes well for you and baby!

Has anyone had any experience with fetal pyelectasis (basically fluid in the kidney)? A routine ultrasound last week at 37 weeks showed some freestanding fluid in the right kidney and a follow up ultrasound today confirmed it. The fluid pocket is measuring 9mm, which is apparently higher than normal but not too terrible. Sounds like we will need to follow up with a pediatric urologist after birth, but curious if anyone else has any experience?
