@yin: the GI team made me switch him to formula. I cried. He's thriving now. It's not the end of the world if it happens, but I would think if he's gaining steadily they won't push it.

@Mrs Green Grass: @beaker: @brownie: Thank you for sharing your experiences and input. LO has been putting on weight and gaining steadily. I guess I fear formula because I read about it on the boards (along with eliminating dairy and soy). This is the first time I've been able to breastfeed, and I don't want to jeopardize what we have. His appointment is tomorrow. Hoping for the best.

Our GI never jumped straight to formula until he was 18 months old and snacking (which she would have discouraged if it was boob or cows milk). We did do formula supplementation for our own reasons and I swear one week on formula did wonders for him and we went on to breastfeed until he was two years old.

She did a lot of blood tests (I would swaddle him with one arm out and then nurse him on the other side for blood draws) and some suggestions for fortifying his breastmilk when he was ftt and getting it from daycare.

Just like any doctor, you need to find one that works with you. We just saw ours again at almost three and I still trust her.

We see our GI doc every week. Our issues are so specialized I'm not sure my experience would help you though... Good luck!

I don't see why that would be their initial recommendation. GI docs will make sure the baby's anatomy is normal and that they are absorbing nutrients properly. How is weight gain? I think that would be the #1 factor in choosing to supplement/etc. Hopefully it will bring relief to you and your lo, not more stress!

(My LO had an upper GI (x-ray with barium drink) done which diagnosed his reflux and determined that his anatomy was normal. We also went back at around 10 months to ask about his weight gain. The doc did recommend Pediasure, but we were already fortifying bm with formula to increase the calories.)

My almost 5 month old has been having a lot of issues, and we have been recommended to see a GI. I'm hesitant and don't want the solution to be formula. :( Despite all of my LO's problems, he has been gaining weight and rarely ever shows discomfort. I eliminated dairy and soy 3 months ago and eliminated gluten and eggs shortly after. A few weeks ago I went ahead and got rid of nuts too, resulting in no more bloody stool.

What is your experience with GI doctors? How were they able to help with your LO?
