I just wanted to update:

Dex had his PT appointment today and it went great. The therapist said she could feel a super mild tightness and gave us some exercises to do at home. She wasn’t worried at all, and she was confident it would resolve. She doesn’t even want a follow up appointment. She said he moved fine and basically thought my doctor overreacted. I’m so so relieved. Thank you for all of your support!!

@Littlebit7: thank you! She just flexed his arms and legs, said he had high tone, which could possibly mean CP, then she recommended PT. She didn’t ask many questions and only said his tone was higher than normal and he had hypertonia. I don’t plan to see her again or the entire practice at this point. My doctor there recently diagnosed my son with Acid Reflux when he actually had RSV and had to be hospitalized for 5 days! It’s just been hard finding a new doctor with Covid-19. I have called around and no one is really accepting new patients. I do wish someone would walk me through the diagnosis a bit more. I’m trying to take deep breaths and relax. I’m just so so worried now. Thank you for all your input and help. I’m still waiting for the PT center to get us in.

@Ms.Mermaid: thank you! I’ll definitely look into our state’s program. Yes, I am seeing some spastic movement, and he will stiffen his legs and torso when he is on the floor and gets upset or overly excited. It didn’t concern me until now, because he is grabbing toys, bringing them to his face, and also exhibiting normal movement as well. Now I’m overly concerned about his stiffening. When he stiffens his legs, it’s hard to get him to bend his knees and relax them.

Thank you so much for your recommendations! I can’t wait to dig deeper into them!

@Jessiemuller88: Sorry, EI is early intervention. Federal law requires all states to have an early intervention program that parents can call to receive services for kids with developmental delays. Different states have different names for it but if you just google your state and early intervention, that will give you the name of the provider. They will often come to your daycare or home to provide services, which is nice.

Are you seeing spastic movements or is your son overly rigid or stiff? Because we were told that some amount of jerky movements in a four month old was still completely normal and some of their birth/early reflexes wearing off (we've been on high alert for seizures since her head size fell off the charts).

I recommend following the #earlyinterventionpt hashtag on instagram if you are on instagram, and finding some pediatric PTs to follow for ideas for exercises and things like that. I love the Kinesio Kids and Tots on Target accounts and I think both of them also have virtual consults/packages happening right now. https://www.kinesiokids.com/ and https://www.totsontarget.com/ You can probably also find support using the hypertonia hashtag.

We take our daughter to a chiropractor which has helped her some with her reflux and she was able to give us some ideas for PT exercises as well. I think infant massage is also recommended for hypertonia? So that might be something to look into.

EI is early intervention. PT/OT/SLP

Did she mention why she thought your child had hypertonia? And it was hyper, not hypo?

I’d do a few things. First, take a deep breath. Something might be amiss but might not. But also, it’s won’t ever be a bad thing to get a PT evaluation and start EI. Trust me, the therapists will explain a lot more than most doctors will. And they will also tell you if they don’t think your child has skilled needs, or if he or she needs further services (I’m a PT though I’m not a pediatric one. There are a few ppl on this board who are). I’d also get a second opinion from your regular doctor, if only to have someone walk you through why the diagnosis was made in the first place. Your doctor really should have walked you through this a bit more. If it were me I’d make it a point to not see that person again.

@Ms.Mermaid: I know, right? She’s not my normal doctor, and she kind of just hit me with the diagnosis and left with no other information. I’m pretty upset about it. Sorry, I’m new to this, what is EI? Thank you for sharing about your daughter.

@Jessiemuller88: both of my kids have hypotonia/low tone. My daughter seems more severe at 11 months than my son, who didn’t show signs until later. He’s doing great and has gotten occupational therapy since he was 2 years old. He does have a harder time with handwriting and he just learned how to pedal a bike. (Eta he is 5)

My understanding is that hypotonia is a symptom of a variety of health and developmental diagnosis. But it can also just be “benign” hypotonia with no known cause. My daughter is 11 months and just starting to crawl and roll. She has been getting PT since 5 months old. Her weakness is in her core and upper body and she is still learning how to sit. We recently went to a neurologist to get further testing. But with the quarantine PT has gone to remote/video sessions which is a bit more challenging.

I think it is really scary and hard to not know what the cause is! I worry about it a lot. But my baby is also super happy and sweet so part of me just stopped caring what is “wrong”. It’s hard though! The fear of the unknown is real. I also have worked with some kids with CP who are extremely intelligent and social despite some physical limitations.

I would start just doing tummy time as much as you can for now. There’s some good resources on “Dino physical therapy” blog and some other videos on YouTube I’ll look up for you if you want to do some exercises at home. I’m also on a Facebook group for hypotonia but it can be intense at times

Hugs!!

Not cool of your doctor to panic you!
My kiddo has hypotonia due to her genetic syndrome so I’m no help but but what I can tell you is that you should definitely start EI and PT but also do not google things and do not panic! Whoever evaluates your son will be able to give you a better sense of his issues and at some point you might end up with an MRI but at this point all you can do is start the EI process and wait and see when he meets milestones and how he does.

I just left my twins’ 4 month checkup and the doctor diagnosed my son with hypertonia and recommended with begin PT immediately. She said it could be a form of cerebral palsy, but we won’t know until he’s a little older. I started googling when I got home, and now I have worked myself into a panic. Please share any experience you may have with this!
