@Clementine12: Congratulations on your boy! I remember my doctor saying he didn't even think they should mention this anomaly when it happened in boys because it almost always resolves on it's own and just causes worry. *fingers crossed* this ends up being a blip for you too.

@Clementine12: she had a follow up ultrasound 6 months post surgery, 12 months post surgery & 18 months post surgery and then was discharged! Because hers was due to a small blockage they wanted to make sure no scar tissue or anything formed. But she’s been totally perfect and healthy. The specialist said she should have no problems as she gets older.

@Clementine12: We were given a similar diagnosis on a 37 week ultrasound. My daughter's situation was like @MommySLP in that the ultrasound at birth switched the diagnosis to hydronephrosis and she went on low-dose antibiotics a few days after birth to ward off infection. We were told she would eventually need surgery for reflux (her right kidney didn't form correctly and has two funky, twisted ureters that were leaking back up to the kidney) but found a doctor who was willing to take a wait and see approach as long as she wasn't having breakthrough infections. We're very glad we did because by 2.5 she somehow outgrew it and was able to go off the medication. Now at 5 she just has yearly ultrasounds.

All that being said, we were told almost all cases resolve when they release their bladder after birth, especially in boys! Our urologist said several times being a girl is a definite negative when it comes to urinary/kidney stuff.

@Clementine12: Do you know if you're having a boy or a girl? I remember my docs telling me it's much more common in boys and that in girls it can be a bit more concerning/complicated.

@MommySLP: thank you for sharing. It's really helpful to hear about a case needing surgery eventually. Is it something docs continue to monitor or is it considered resolved now that your daughter has had surgery?

@Clementine12: my daughter had this, although the diagnosis was later changed to hydronephrosis. It was caught at my anatomy scan and then monitored throughout the rest of my pregnancy. At birth she had an ultrasound, and then every 2-4 months after. At 2 months old she was put on daily antibiotics to ward off any UTI problems, and also referred to a pediatric urologist at the children’s hospital. We had a few (pretty invasive) tests completed and continued to monitor it. At 12 months it still wasn’t getting better and he really felt surgery was needed. She had a small kink in one of her tubes which was causing the slow flow of urine and the enlarged kidney. If it’s not dealt with, it can cause kidney damage. For the surgery, she was in the hospital just overnight. She is now 3.5 and has had no additional problems. It was definitely scary at the time but it was handled with no problems and it is not life threatening if it’s addressed. I’m happy to go into more detail if you have any questions. Hang in there! I’ve heard most cases do resolve on their own.

@JennyPenny: nope that sounds right. It was thrown at me in a phone call so I have a list of questions to ask at my next appt but this makes me feel a lot better - I was mostly wondering what was going to happen if things hadn't cleared up by birth. Thanks for researching and for sharing your story

My doctors never gave me a medical term but based on this result while googling I think my DS2 might have had the same thing:

What is pyelectasis?
PYELECTASIS
Pyelectasis is an increased collection of urine in part of the baby’s kidney called the renal pelvis. Approximately 1 in every 40 pregnancies have pyelectasis, and this can be seen in one or both of the kidneys. Pyelectasis can be seen in any pregnancy, but is more common in boys.

He basically got more ultrasounds the remainder of the pregnancy to check if it had resolved (it didn’t) He had an ultrasound just after he was born to check again and it hadn’t. He had an ultrasound at 6 months and at that point it had resolved. I want to say they told us they’d consider surgery around 2 or if we saw any issues which we never did. I remember feeling stressed because no one likes to hear that something is “wrong” but in the end it was a non-issue. Hopefully the same is true for you.

Apologies if we’re not talking about the same thing.

Our 20 week u/s gave a diagnosis of renal pylectasis. We had a clear quad screen and an otherwise clear ultrasound, but I'm wondering about what to expect at the followup 32 week ultrasound and what after birth will look like if it hasn't cleared up. Do any bees have experience with this?
