It was huge for us to feed upright and not jostle or move at all right after a feeding (including car, stroller, cart, etc.) for at least 30 minutes after or he would throw up. Even picking him up sometimes did it. Medication helped a lot. I did gas drops at all their feedings for months and I took anything irritating out of their diet. I was off dairy for both boys, anything acidic (citrus, tomatoes), beans, crucifers (anything gas inducing) and off caffeine and any tea, coffee, and chocolate (even decaf). </p> <p>Unfortunately, going off coffee and chocolate made a big difference, so whomp whomp. But once they were comfortably on their meds, I had no issue having some of that stuff back in my diet. The other stuff I went off because with DS1, they wanted me to eliminate stuff before trying meds (those were awful, awful weeks). So for DS2, I went off those things right before he was born in case he had reflux too so that I could get him on meds sooner. </p> <p>DS1 basically screamed and never slept for weeks and weeks, he was Zantac by 3 weeks plus I was trying elimination stuff, hypoallergenic formulas, etc and all the while he just had really severe reflux. Zantac stopped working at 5-ish weeks and he was even worse than before he was on meds. The next month was an absolute nightmare - he slept for 30 minutes at a time for a total of 8 hours per day. He had 4-6 hour witching hours, we were doing small feedings, and then holding upright for 30 minutes, hoping he'd sleep for 30 minutes and then start the nightmare all over again. Going on a PPI changed our lives (unfortunately that didn't happen until like 12 weeks old). </p> <p>I share this because by the time DS2 rolled around, I really didn't want to go through that again. So when he started showing symptoms at 3 weeks, I was glad I was off caffeine and chocolate and dairy. Because by 5 weeks I was in there like his older brother had severe reflux, Zantac didn't work for him, we hold him upright for 30 minutes, he hiccups and gasps and cries anytime he lays down, I'm off dairy, caffeine, teas, coffee, decaf, chocolate, acidic foods, crucifers, I'm pretty much off soy because I don't really eat it, and we supplement with a gentle formula GIVE ME PRILOSEC NOW. The appointment went for like 12 minutes and I got my drugs and left. He also got hiccups super often and had the projectile vomiting issue. He was put on zantac and his symptoms got way better. DD has reflux and is still on a PPI at 10 months after an unsuccessful attempt to wean her off at 6 months. </p> <p>But she did the gasping/choking when reclined, spit up very frequently but not in large amounts except for the occasional projectile vomit, and would NEVER EVER lay/settle/sleep on her back, even slightly reclined on her back. She was constantly having these really wet and gurgly sounding burps and then she'd swallow and cry. </p> <p>It took us until she was 3 months to get her on meds but it made a HUGE difference. Neither of them spits up a ton, but the hard swallowing/gasping was my main indication. I brought it up at our 1 month appointment for Zoe and she was prescribed Zantac. It did help with making her generally happier, and she doesn't seem so angry with the spitting up/hard swallowing (it would make her cry previously). But the last few days it seems to be getting worse because she is doing it WHILE I'm breastfeeding her and it's interrupting her feeding. She arches back and does the hard swallowing and occasionally spits up in the middle of feeding. I think I'm going to push for a new med. Zantac didn't work for Fiona and it isn't really meant to stop reflux (but rather to make it not painful). They both had the gasping, gagging and gulping as well as the grimacing like they were in pain. They were both very poor sleepers because of it and not terribly happy until they were medicated. (The older slept literally an hour at a time then woke with the gagging, the youngest made it more typical 2ish hour stretches.) All of my kids spit up a ton, including the non-reflux one. </p> <p>The doctors I saw were not big on medicating if the child was gaining weight (which they were). The first time I felt very guilty because the doctor fought me on it, but my baby was miserable and so was I, with no sleep. There was clearly something wrong. The second child I knew what I was dealing with and was better able to advocate for him. </p> <p>In both cases they were on Ranitidine (Zantac) and I was careful to keep them upright after feedings. Both my boys had silent reflux which is less spitting up but worse, bc they essentially swallow the refluxed milk over and over. Basically it burns once coming up and again going down. They constantly had hiccups and gasped and grunted and they both needed medication. Zantac didn't work for DS1 after two weeks so I went to Prevacid. DS2 I just started right off on Prilosec. My guy did that and he gained weight really well and was generally happy. But eating well can be a way to soothe themselves and then itnjust creates more reflux and discomfort and they want to eat more. I would try to get a few videos of your LO to show the ped what he’s doing. My LO made noises but he nothing that worries me at first. He’s 5mo now but the eating upright,burping, Ebf has helped a lot. He has hiccups but to a minimunow. He spits up but not as much. Does LO spit up? We burp him a lot and feed him upright. I also breastfeed because it helped him. The formula didn’t go well with him. My husband and I have been thinking maybe he has a little reflux.</p> <p>He's a really happy baby, and his weight gain is great, we don't have any problems with him sleeping generally or eating, but the gasping really freaks us out. He also hiccups all the time after we burp him--he gets the hiccups probably 3 or more times a day. I'm really starting to freak out about this though because after feeding him today he projectile vomited about halfway across the living room!</p> <p>We see the pedi next week for his well check, but just wanted to see if anyone had insight or advice before going! Thanks! </p>
