@Mrs Panda: i was 16 when it happened, was on Bc for 14 yrs- no issues - and I haven't had any in the 4.5 yrs since going off, knock on wood!

It was like childbirth pain, only worse!

@dagret: wow, that sounds scary! My OB did tell me over the phone about the small risk of torsion and to go straight to the ER of I felt extreme pain (like, child birth pain, she said). Hope you have not had any more issues!

@Mrs Panda: I had one in high school. The first time they gave me pain meds and sent me home. The second time, it was worse:
-I could barely stand to sit in the car for the drive to the ER
-at the ER, I actually laid on the bathroom tile floor (I was vomiting from the pain) and people actually suggested that I get taken back before them.
-once I got checked out (internal exam, cath'd w/ultrasound w full bladder) they gave me a shot of something for the nausea and were about to send me home when I barfed again
-then they called in a ob/gyn and did emergency laparoscopic surgery. The cyst was causing my ovary to torsion and was cutting off the blood flow. Your ovary' usually about the size of the end of your thumb and mine was swollen to fist-size.
- they took 3/4 of my ovary and put me on hormonal Bc.

@MaryM: thanks for sharing. I'm starting to wonder if my long-time off and on pain has always been due to cysts! And also if my recent bleeding was one bursting as opposed to my period randomly coming back when it had been gone from the iud.

I've had them chronically for the last couple of years (perhaps longer and I didn't know?)

They've been up to 10 cm large. I don't have a ton of symptoms, but occasionally they do cause pain.

I have USs somewhat regularly to make sure they're not irregularly shaped and that they're full of clear fluid (and not solid). Because they don't really impact my every day life, and because they seem to constantly come back, my doctor doesn't want to operate (because they'll just come back).

I haven't had one burst, so I'm assuming they're hormonal. the only time I haven't had them is when I've been on high doses of progesterone.

@Mrs Panda: they were shocked when they found out how big it was. She had no symptoms. I think they found it during her annual exam.

My best friend had surgery in high school to remove a large cyst. It was the size of a softball! As far as I know she hasn't had any since then.

Thanks ladies! Sounds like I don't need to worry, but good to know I should ask what kind of a cyst it is.

One of my best friends had one that ruptured like @Jackiedavis87:. It was incredibly painful for her and she went to Urgent Care, but I don't think she ended up needing to do anything for it besides take some pain medication.

My mom recently had a huge one though that she had to have removed.

I had one two years ago that ruptured. I actually went to Urgent care because I was bleeding heavily, and my period wasn't for another week and a half. The pain from it wasn't any worst than my usual period cramps, but I used to have terrible cramps, so that's Not saying much lol. I bled for about 7 days, and the ultrasound they gave me saw more little ones on my ovaries, but I was told they were very common and didn't need to be removed. I've been pregnant and had a baby since then with no problems. The doctor made it sound like they're only a problem if they get to a certain size and don't rupture on thier own, but I think that's uncommon?!

I guess it depends what kind of cyst it is? I have a history of having very large cysts on my ovaries which after a lap was determined to be endometriomas (=stage IV endometriosis) I never new I had it until the cysts showed up from severe pain. Those need to be removed. I have a a couple friends who needed surgery to remove dermoid cysts. Then there are regular fluid filled cysts that come and go or sometimes need birth control to get rid of them.

My dr thinks I have one, but didn't bother with an ultrasound and said to give it a couple of months to see if it resolved on its own. If not to come back for an ultrasound or to email if my pain got significantly worse. Things have remained the same, and it has been going on for about 6 months now. Mine is on the left side. Curious to hear what others have experienced also.

Last weekend I had sharp pains in my lower right side, followed by heavy bleeding. I thought something was going on with my iud, but found out after an ultrasound today that I have a large ovarian cyst. I'm going in next week to discuss whether anything needs to be done, but am just wondering if anyone has had one (with symptoms) and how it was determined whether to remove it or let it resolve on its own. Thanks!
