There are payment plans you could look into. If that would help?

My cat ate a TON of elastic when he was 2. elastic bands, rubber bracelets, elastic string from cat toys. He needed emergency surgery and everything turned out fine. Although we are hyper aware of anything with elastic now!

When we went through with the surgery, I had a lot of worries about success. The Vet told me that they see animals eat SO MANY things. It's a pretty common problem and usually repairable.

I really hope this turns around in your favour! Good luck.

I'd guess surgery to remove would be somewhere in the $1-$2k range providing there aren't any complications. I used to work at a vet clinic and a lab came in that was vomiting, not eating, etc and they couldn't figure out what was wrong. He was wasting away and no one could find a reason despite x-rays. Out of desperation they opened him up to discover the dog had eating clear fishing line which would never show up on an x-ray since it's so thin. The intestines had actually started to open up with little holes from the fishing line cutting into them. They were able to remove the line and repair all the holes. I actually watched the surgery and it was pretty incredible.

@littlejoy: oh man. I hope your pup will pass it naturally! There is a credit plan called care credit I think that can be used towards vet costs that is interest free. I used it towards my wisdom teeth removal. You can also call other vets in your area for a estimate. Good luck.

@Happygal: Sadly, the financial piece will play a part (always). She's a part of our family ... Our favorite pet. It sounds like from others there are ways to do payment plans, etc., which would help. We had a hard year financially, and this would be devastating. :(

@littlejoy: Our dog had 1/3 of his lung removed due to a mass they found when he kept getting sick last year. Very luckily it wasn't a tumor, but it took months of diagnostics before the procedure, and we almost lost him on the operating table. It was incredibly traumatic (and expensive-SO expensive), and we decided that we won't put him through any sort of experience like that again. We have our fingers crossed that since he recovered so beautifully he'll still have many years with us, but we just appreciate every day we have with him. I'd say that you need to take the dog's age into consideration in addition to the predicted recovery times, costs, etc. I'm hoping your pup is okay!

My dog ate the stuffing from a comforter and had an obstruction that wouldn't pass. She started looking sluggish and was vomiting green bile. We waited a day or two and she didn't eat - just drank water and kept vomiting the bile. Eventually we had to have a barium scan, xray, surgery, recovery, and give her fluids. It cost $2500.

Luckily we have never needed surgery and our dog has never eaten that large of a volume at one time but she's eaten quite a few of my and lo's shoes and the leather comes out through one direction or the other within about a day. Good luck!

My dog ate lots of socks!! All of a sudden she started vomiting her food. She threw up one sock, so I thought it was done. She kept vomiting and we took her in. Moral of the story, they gave her an IV and lots of laxatives. She passed all of them. We were prepared for surgery, but luckily it worked out. If your dog shows any sign of distress, of course go to the vet! The IV and laxatives were much cheaper than surgery :)

Pet surgery is expensive. We paid $1,000 just today to have her ear examined and cleaned out. We have medical bills from my c-section on top of that, but there's no question that we would do this for her. Our dog is part of the family.

I hope it passes as well  poor pup. Our dog had a non emergency surgery for something else and it was 1200. I think our vet does offer payment plans so good idea to ask about that. In our case it wouldve been slightly less expensive to choose a non board certified surgeon(regular vet vs specialist). And I know people who have taken pets to a local university vet school and had surgeries for a slightly reduced rate (still performed by vets not just students!). I would definitely investigate some options just in case.

I hope your dog will be ok and won't need surgery! They can digest all kinds of things.

If she does need it... My dog had to have two surgeries and I think for something like that the cost would be in the $1k range, and a vet can definitely work with you to spread the cost out over several payments.

Haven't had abdominal surgery for any critters other than a spay done at a spay clinic (<$200) but getting a tooth removed was around $300 I think. I think most vets can work out a payment plans and/or there is some kind of no interest credit card for emergency vet bills I've heard of but can't remember the name. Just thoughts! Good luck!! Sending good thoughts your way.

We've never experienced that, but two of my pets had surgery a couple of years ago. My cat was spayed and had her teeth cleaned, which was close to $700, and my dog had to have a grown removed, which was also $700.

Their stomach acid is pretty strong- hopefully it will dissolve this over time whilst simultaneously allowing water and nutrients to get through. I don't know whether a pillow case would cause a blockage. I'm so sorry this is happening, I know it's excruciating to watch. Our dog had the surgery for bowel obstruction when she was about 9 months. I won't say how much it cost because we probably live in different countries (australia) and vet costs probably vary wildly for this kind of thing. It was a lot but we had insurance and I often think about how lucky we were to have had the foresight to get insurance.

If worst comes to worst your vet might be willing to engage in a payment plan for you. I hope you don't have to go there and it resolves itself!

I know dogs are different, and costs can vary, but our cat had emergency stomach surgery after eating a piece of wired tinsel before Christmas. Our total cost was $2,000 (surgery and recovery). We are not in a big city though... I suspect it would have been higher elsewhere. Hope your dog can pass everything! This same cat has done stuff like this before (eating yarn and embroidery thread), but this was the first he had to have surgery. Hoping for the best for you - I know how hard the decision can be!

Our dog ate a pillowcase today. 1/2 of it is completely gone. We induced vomiting at home, but a large amount is still in her system. We're following the vets orders to watch for any signs of a blockage. She's eaten things before, but nothing with stringy fibers ... we are rather nervous.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of thing?

To be completely honest, I'm not sure we could go through with the surgery if it was needed. I'm not sure what vets would do in this situation, but financially, I just don't think it would be possible. It's heartbreaking to let my heart go there, but we have to be prepared. :(

Can any of you share about how much something like this cost for your pet?

And, just any additional advice would be really helpful.
