We did "no cry sleep solution" which is basically pick up/put down. Both of mine were around 10 months, it just takes patience. It's not a fast process, but worked best for our family. Our ped recommended between 4-6 months, but we waited a bit longer, wish I'd tried it sooner with my second.

@gentlelunette: super late! Like 18 months maybe? I did CIO with my first baby and went to the opposite extreme with my second. I would say 6 months would be a good time. They're a bit more sentient by then.

@gentlelunette: we also always waited a bit before going to him. I do think that helped. So there was some crying involved... Maybe you could start a nap routine? Is the room pretty dark? Do you use a sound machine?

I have done PU/PD inconsistently with DD since about 8 weeks .. I find it works just takes longer to achieve unassisted sleeping.

One thing that I did, was identify all her sleep props. At 2 mo she would only sleep on me, swaying in the moby or sucking on my pinky (my letdown was too strong to comfort nurse and she wouldn't take a paci). So I weaned her off the movement and taught her how to suck her thumb. Over the course of week I started with her drowsy on me and worked up to putting her in her crib on her tummy cause she couldn't reach her thumb otherwise.

DD was hit pretty hard at the 6, 9 & 12 mo sleep regression and I probably made it worse by letting her cosleep at those times but we always got her sleeping alone again with PU/PD. Again, it just takes longer.

@FaithFertility: it works...for now! Does your DD have any issues with waking and being upset you're not there? I've read that can be the issue with nursing to sleep (fall sleep with boob, and they expect to wake up with it too). I'm not entirely opposed to continuing it, but the struggle really is nap time and we're not having much luck changing those habits! I feel like if she gains the skills for bed time, it'll make sleeping independently at nap much easier.

@T.H.O.U.: @Tanjowen: good to know it worked for you guys! I'll have to take a look at Sleepy Little also!

@Mrs Green Grass: we're definitely still in survival mode over here, and generally we just do what works, but it's starting to get ridiculous that I can't put her down for naps/until she's dead to the world. I'm thinking some very gentle nudging in the right direction might help us all. Glad to know I'm not the only one still "doing what work" at almost 4 months old! Lol.

@mamimami: when did you do it with your LO? I'm worried I'm jumping the gun a bit at 4 months, but it seems like the things I'm reading suggest starting it around that age.

@gracecat: I haven't read the book but will definitely pick up a copy if we decide this is the way to go. I'm still on the fence, but feeling like something's gotta change!

Pick up put down comes from Tracy Hoggs book, "Secrets of the Baby Whisperer", have you read the chapter on that? Would recommend grabbing a copy of her book if you haven't already.

We did a totally worth unorganized pick up put down. But I will say, at four months we did absolutely whatever worked because that was HARD! Usually we waited him around the block in a stroller u til he was asleep. But even now at two, if he really can't settle and cries hard, we go in. I try not to sit back down in the chair, I just stand up and maybe sing one song and then put him back down. On a bad night we have to do it twice, but once usually works.

I didn't really study it but kinda did it. Sleepy Littles on facebook is a good non CIO resource.

Not sure I ever studied it as a method, but I did what you are describing. I would put him down, step outside of the room and wait. If he didn't settle after a few minutes, I would go back in, pick him up, sway and rock for a few minutes until he settled, then put him back down again. The first few nights I did this up to 10 times in a row. Some nights it wouldn't work at all and we wound up back at co-sleeping, but persistence was key and it worked well with in a week.

Wondering if anyone has some experience/tips/etc. regarding the Pick Up/Put Down method of sleep training.

We just made the transition to the crib, after having my DD in the bassinet since about 5 weeks. DD is now 15 weeks and while she will sleep in the crib at night, she's still in my arms (or carrier or stroller) for every nap and I would like to start gently nudging her toward sleeping alone. At night, we have a whole host of sleep associations. She needs to be nursed to sleep most nights, and absolutely must be rocked to sleep until she is out. There is no "drowsy but awake" in this house!

I don't think I have the will power to do CIO or Ferber just yet and think the PU/PD method might be the way to go to start.

So, does anyone have any suggested resources, tips to share, success stories (or the opposite!) regarding this type of sleep training? Any help is much appreciated!!
