I had shingles while pregnant and I had a 1 year old as well. Mine were on my face, so I just wore safety glasses and a shirt with sparkles all over it so that when holding my child they would want to touch the shirt and not reach for my face.

@bhbee: So sorry that you have to deal with this now. Thinking of you, and really hoping the antivirals bring some relief

I've never had shingles but just wanted to send hugs. Late pregnancy is awful in it own right and I've heard shingles is literally the worst. I'm sorry that you are having to deal with both of those at the same time.

@808love: any tips for managing the pain??

@littleblessings: I’m so glad to hear bf worked for you. They’ve told me the same things but it’s a little nerve wracking.

I had shingles at the beginning of my current pregnancy. I had an almost 1 year old at the time. I was told to keep her away from the rash area and to keep it covered to prevent her ending up with the chicken pox. Unfortunately, the spot the rash was, was impossible to keep her away from. The dr. Told me that breastfeeding is what prevented my baby from getting it

@ladybee: it’s shingles :bummed: thankfully they called in antivirals for me. Still a super not fun situation since it’s full on nerve pain now but I’m hopeful the antivirals slow down progression and I’m getting a little relief from hot and cold. Still no real labor which for now is probably good.

To give you another alternative; it could be irritation of an intercostal (rib) nerve. The ribs get all jammed up late in pregnancy and it can cause nerve pain when pinched

I hope you feel better soon and it's not shingles.

Feeling like junk was one of my first signs of labor. But I only noticed looking back.

Waiting to hear back from my ob so just curious if anyone else has been there - and of course it’s Friday afternoon so options feel limited.

I’m 39w and noticed yesterday persistent itching on the right side only of my back. It kept me up last night and today feels more like nerve pain, still itchy too. Unfortunately it reminds me way too much of when I last had shingles (I was in my 20s then! My immune system is not so great). No rash yet, but it didn’t start that way last time either so I’m hoping to get antivirals and nip it early. My 3yo also gave me his cold (and I feel like junk but who can tell what’s what at 39 weeks anyway??) so probably all in my immune system is just overmatched.

Trying to back away from dr Google ... I feel like labor is not far off because I’ve been passing mucus/show since yesterday morning and had tons of painful contractions yesterday, just didn’t stick around yet. Maybe illness will put it off though.
