Oh, yeah, it made me heave too. But my stomach was 100% empty (I wasn't even allowed water after midnight the night before), so nothing to vomit up.

ETA- I do plan to try nitrous next time. If I hate it, I can just stop and it's out of my system immediately. Sorry you don't have the option!

I had it. Took the edge off in the beginning with both kids. Come time for the next dose it stopped working entirely. Second dose didn't even take the edge off.

I hated my stadol experience. Made me feel so drunk to the point where I was convinced I would stop breathing if I fell asleep because my head was not connected to my body anymore. It did help with pain to some extent, but I felt like it numbed everything until it was at its peak then stopped working completely. The peaks of each contraction were still agonizing. I went straight to the epidural with my second.

I had some kind of narcotic when I was in labor. I honestly dont remember what it was. I remember not liking it though. It made me dizzy and nauseous and didn't do anything for the pain.

And yeah.... nitrous is fucking boss. They really need to do that here.

I had it with my first and the experience with it was neutral- I originally said that I would NEVER take a narcotic during labor that I may just as well get the epidural. ha ha, wasn't naive me the cutest!

Fast forward to actual labor during transition and the anesthesiologist was nowhere to be found- I screamed for something, anything and that is what I got. The high was interesting, nothing negative and the pain was gone, but of course not the pressure. I got a very light epidural not too long after and didn't feel a thing with that injection. I did push for 3 hours and was not very good at it. My first was a very sleepy baby at first and we had a hard time getting him to eat- not sure how much of that or my crappy pushing job can be attributed to the drugs, I probably should have labored down longer. Plus homeboy had a gigantic head!!

My second labor was super easy (#1 bore the way and made it way easier for #2, 2 years later!)- I asked for a half-dose epidural just before they broke my water (I was around 9cm), labored down for a while, and he came out in 2-3 pushes with just a little suction help since he had an arm at his face. He was super alert and a great eater.

Really simple compared to the first and I was up and walking around within 45 minutes or so. Unless you have medical reasons not to, I would take an epidural and enjoy the experience as much as you can. I could have done it unmedicated, but for me- why? Better living through pharmacology!

I took it through IV when I was waiting for epidural...
I felt drunk...fast and I told my DH and sister that every time I closed my eyes I saw the snowman from Frozen.....lol
It took the edge of and made the epidural insert a breeze it wore off within an hour but by then I was epi happy! :)

I had a 33 hour induction and when I wasn't progressing well at hour 24, I had a dose of stadol. I LOVED it, it helped me get some rest and relax enough to finally progress and my water finally broke. I used another half dose later shortly before getting my epidural because I was TERRIFIED of the epidural. The stadol definitely did its job but it really did make me feel drunk/high/sleepy. But, I had been up nearly two days at that point and laboring w pitocin for a full day so I really WAS tired and needed that help. I was so relaxed and calm after getting some sleep. The half dose is what I would try first next time, FWIW, but I'm not a doctor.
If you like and trust your doctor and want to go this route, I say do it.

ETA: I did hallucinate/dream about the Berenstein Bears. Maybe it makes me an awful mom (ha) but I actually found that really pleasant and it's one of the parts of my birth story that makes me smile two years later. Also, C was totally fine when she came out, no sleepiness.

I have heard terrible things about Stadol. My MIL said they gave it to her when she was in labor, and she still felt everything she just lost the ability to express herself. And my best friend took it -- she had a failed epidural -- and she said it put her out of her right mind.

I made it to 9.5cm and then got an epi because I didn't progress after a few hours. (My total unmedicated labor lasted 17 hours.) Based on my experience, I would rather experience that than take Stadol.

I had it for my first labor, and it made me completely pass out. Like within 45 seconds. Not too bad, I was able to sleep through labor, I only remember waking up a couple of times with really bad contractions and when I got the epidural.
I was able to wake up and snap out of it when it was time to push, but I was completely gone before that.

I tried it before I decided to get the epi...I hated it! It definitely took the edge off but I was high as a kite. Giggling and telling everyone I had to keep my eyes closed because I felt dizzy but when my eyes were closed all I could see were pink birds and toothpaste. Then when it started to wear off a bit I was already in transition, plus I hadn't eaten in more than 12 hours plus I was just crashing and I started shaking and felt all weird and crazy so I got the epi. I would not have been able to trust myself to even hold my baby on that stuff. I want to attempt med free this time...hopefully I won't t have to be induced and maybe it will be more manageable!

I had demoral (sp?), so not the same, but it was a narcotic. My experience was same as @2PeasinaPod, except more extreme in that narcotic painkillers make me so lethargic I literally can't move without a massive effort. So I wound up unable to move, sleepy to the point of falling asleep in the 30 seconds between contractions, but still felt every damn thing. Since I react so badly to narcotic painkillers, I'm not a great example of what they're like, but I would personally far rather not have drugs and feel in control of myself more. And for me, being on painkillers does NOT make me "not care" about the pain like everyone says. It just makes it so I can't move or just be awake to be prepared for it.

I had a two day induction (the first day failed) and both nights before I delivered, I was very uncomfortable due to the cervadil. They gave me stadol to help me sleep but also would not give it close to the delivery. It helped me sleep a lot, it knocked me out. I got the epi for pain control the day I actually delivered.

If you made it to 9cm with pitocin during your last labor, you can for sure go bare bones this time around!

I've had a pitocin-induced birth and a med-free birth, and let me tell you, natural labor is much more manageable than pitocin-induced.

@MenagerieMama: Oh i'm aware that it's a narcotic and I know it can have some other effects, but I wasn't under the impression it was better, necessarily, just different. Like i said, for a variety of factors, she thought it might be a more beneficial pain relief than a full on epidural, based on my last labor. I didn't get an epidural until I was 9cm with E, and i was on a hefty dose of pitocin at that time. If i go into labor on my own this time, it's a different ballgame.

I don't necessarily want to jump straight to an epidural again, but I don't want a bare bones delivery here, either!

Even then, the epidural didn't touch the really bad sciatic pain i was having. I'm not sure being flat on my back in a bed really helped that out. So i still had a lot of pain and discomfort with an epidural....

I have not used it, but from what I understand (from my birth instructor), it makes you feel a bit drunk and you can't have it too close to delivery. I found that my pain was managed by moving around and at times having counter pressure.

My SIL used it, haven't heard her feedback. Where I worked we used fentanyl - would tell people it would make you somewhat "drunk" and while they would feel the pain they wouldn't care as much about it. My two cents is that stadol (and similar) is a narcotic pain medication that is systemic - meaning the baby is exposed. So you can't get it too close to delivery because that could mean a sleepy baby during the important transition. This is part of the reason I prefer epidurals and went straight to that during my labor when I wanted pain control, because it's not systemic so the baby isn't exposed to the medication. And LO definitely was not a sleepy baby!

Sorry that wasn't exactly what you were asking but I have a pet peeve with people thinking getting narcotic pain meds in their IV is better than an epidural, and I feel like it's poorly understood by people. Or maybe I'm just defensive about my epidural! Ha! Wouldn't change that for a second though :)

Did anybody have Stadol during their labor?

I met with my OB today and she encouraged me to think about going sans epidural, based on a variety of stuff. I asked if anything was available to bridge the gap between feeling EVERYTHING and feeling NOTHING (i wish nitrous was offered here!) and she said stadol was great and highly recommended it for this situation.

So, anyone have it? How'd it make you feel? I think i've had one friend who had it and said it was amazing and took the edge off but she could still feel well enough to push effectively
