@MrsADS: Ours gave us liquid hydrocodone. We used it the first 2 days and then switched to using at bedtime because overnight is the hardest due to lack of water and mouth open = throat drying out.

@MrsADS: It is so so worth it. We went from having her sleep mouth open, restless, snoring etc. to now sleeping mouth closed and peacefully. The ENT seemed to say our recovery was abnormally good - she did say before that if things got bad a course of oral steroids can really help so maybe ask about getting a scrip for that in advance given your previous experience?

@kns that's great to hear. My son's are also massive, almost touching and he has sleep apnea so I am hoping it will help him a lot, but dread the surgery recovery after he had such a rough time with his adenoids.

@MrsADS: We just did both adenoids and tonsils on Aug 1 with my 5 year old. We didn't find it to be too terrible. The first day was fine and we cycled motrin and tylenol every 3 hours even through the night. We did that for about 3 days and my daughter was fine eating pasta etc. Definitely push water as the dryness definitely makes pain worse. Our ENT said that days 7-9 would likely be the worst and she was right but it still wasn't too bad for us.

Almost immediately her sleep dramatically improved and her tonsils were giant, apparently they were nearly touching. So we were very happy to have done it. At the 10 day mark we were off all meds and things were pretty much back to normal.

@tanjowen did they give you narcotics or heavier pain meds for the first few days? Our ENT says they only do Motrin and Tylenol at home. No narcotics. Not that I want to give him stronger meds, but I'm concerned the Motrin/Tylenol combo may not be enough and he won't drink.

@MrsADS: We are one week out from tonsils and adenoids being removed, also for sleep apnea and restricted breathing.

The first 2 days were rough and the first 3 nights very rough, but starting day 4 we have been improving every day and doing great. We gave the heavy meds the first 2 days because he was in such misery and now are on Tylenol every 4 hours. Nights are still difficult because he wakes up in pain due to not having drank anything and his throat is dehydrated.

Lots of TV time, lots of ice cream and yogurt, constant sips of water and sleeping with him at night have been key to making it. I hope it goes ok for your little guy.

ETA: He is 5 yrs old.

Just curious if your child had a tonsillectomy and how they did, how recovery was, etc.

My son is almost 4 and will have to have his out. He already had his adenoids out in March- didn't think we'd have to do tonsils, but here we are. He has pretty severe sleep apnea. He had a terrible recovery from the adenoid removal and I am very worried. The ENT already warned us it would be awful.
