I've had good experience with EBay for things that are small enough to package and mail. I don't usually sell for close to what the stuff cost, but not pennies either, and sales are usually quick. I'm OK with selling it cheap so someone gets some use from it... if I just haul it to the local consignment store (which is far away and has weird hours) they just resell it anyway.

I take things to a local children's consignment shop. It's so much easier to just drop it off and get a check from them. Though, I drop off low to moderate priced items. High value items, I would consider selling another way.

I have done JBF sales in the past but it is a lot of work! You have to tag each item, input into the computer, drop it off at a designated time and then pick it up at the end of the sale. Oh, if you want more % in profit, you can volunteer your time (4-8 hours). Just a lot of time commitment. I dropped off a lot of stuff but ended up with $80 in profits and had to bring some/half of it home. It is already tagged so I can just bring it to the next seasonal sale but odds are I would have to retag and reduce the price because it didn't sell in the first place.

I think if you have the spare time, JBF would be good. Also, if you have the dedication to continue selling at each sale, it could be worth it. Maybe have a fellow mom friend, help you sort and tag? Then you can do the same by helping her tag her items?

If you want to sell, but don't want do all the work, some JBF sales have VIP tagging. You pay someone to tag the items for you. But I don't know if you have much say in what things will sell for, but they might be more realistic in how they price items. Also, at the end of the day, how much are you making? Could you have just dropped it off at a consignment store and gotten a check much quicker than using a JBF sale?

But like I said, I think high value items (like designer diaper bags) might do better at JBF sales. At least, that's what I hope when I have the time to do another JBF sale.

Generally, I prefer shopping at JBF sales than the actual selling. Actually, my local consignment store (Once upon a child) has seasonal sales where I can buy 10 clearance items for $10. Pretty good price considering, you'll notice at JBF sales that clothing sized 18month (like a shirt), don't go for anything under $3.

Yeah, I basically do a quick scan of craigslist & NextDoor to see what similar/same items are posted for, as well as how prevalent they are.

Things like boppies, bumbos, etc I have just put out at our curb since they sell for cheap, there are a ton of them, and we more than got our use (3 kids over 5y!).

Other things that were more expensive, aren't as worn (only 1 or 2 kids used it), and/or are less frequently on those sites, I will price higher. Depending on how fast I want them to be gone, I typically go 50% what I paid or less.

Honestly, if I feel like someone is super low-balling me, I'd rather just donate it and take the good karma :)

I haven't sold clothing, but I was able to sell an extra car seat, baby gates, gifted unopened towels and gifted wubanubs.

I still haven't sold my Halo. A buyer asked me to lower my price to be more competitive with his Registry completion discount. I have the space and passed on that one. There have been a couple people interested in a monitor.

I try to be very thoughtful in my pricing to begin with. The times buyers have asked me for the lowest I will take I put it back on them and ask for their best offer and see if I can live with it. The way I respond to all inquiries with "when are you available to meet?"

Craigslist has worked and FB mktplace and local moms/ online yard sale places.

I sell clothing on Kidizen. It's an app. I've done really well on it and it's super simple to use.

I sell gear on my work's classifieds or on the Letgo app. I always set a price but almost always someone negotiaties. So I set the price at my "ideal" and then just know in my head how low I'm willing to go.

I always had good luck selling stuff where we used to live, but you have to know your market. Nicer brands tend to sell faster, and I admit that we “invested” in some nicer items knowing we would be able to recoup costs later. For example, back when I was pregnant with LO2, I wanted to buy a Bjorn bouncer and I was looking at them 2nd hand, but they were only 30% less than retail. So I bought a new one, we used it and then I listed it for 30% less than retail like everybody else and sold it the 1st day. I sold our Bugaboo for almost half of what we paid for it (and it was 4 years old!). I used a local FB moms buy/sell group and if that didn’t work, I would list on a site similar to Craigslist. Agree with others about looking for similar goods and pricing them accordingly.

This is so interesting, thanks everyone! I feel like I'm always seeing posts from people about gear having good re-sale prices, so I'm glad I'm not alone in finding it challenging, lol

@Littlebit7: really good point about needing to set a price, I'll try that next time!

I'm a first time mom in a rural area with a pretty meager Craigslist/Facebook marketplace, and right now I'm obessed with the app Mercari to buy gently used baby stuff.

It's pretty much like what @littlebit7 described--pick a price, wait for it to sell, then print out a label and mail it. On the seller end, it seems like a lot less work than having to deal with flaky buyers or taking time out of your schedule to meet up with random strangers. It's also really easy to search so yu can bundle your stuff or price it competatively.

good luck!

On my local FB group, certain things sell very well. I haven't had a ton of luck. I sold my snap-n-go stroller as well as a car seat winter zip blanket... haven't had much luck with clothing online. I'm hoping to sell some baby Hunter boots. It seems really high end items always sell (Patagonia, Bugaboo, specific toys like play houses, train tables, etc)

I try online first then I try to sell to a local used clothing chain shop and then I'll donate.

I use two places:
Local Facebook mom group/buy and sell(very local, our town is a square mile but super densely populated). I be sure to post my location so people aren't put off by going out of their way. This is how I sell gear. I also post a price, condition, disclose any imperfections, and take a ton of good pictures. If I'm buying i will pass something by because of poor pics, poor lighting, dirty, etc.

Poshmark: Its ridiculously simple to sell clothes and accessories/shoes. I tend to sell randomly on poshmark; you have to make it worth the buyers while because shipping for the buyer is like $5.99. So I tend to sell higher end brand name stuff like tea, boden, patagonia, etc. Or bundles of mid to low range stuff like carters, gap, etc. I just sold a bundle of 4 fleece buntings yesterday. (buyers can buy multiple things from you and you can set a discount they can get for buying three or more items). Poshmark emails you a label and you slap it on any old box or bag you have laying around.
I generally set my prices pretty low just to get stuff sold. At a certain point people are only going to pay so much for used baby stuff (ex: gap, since people can get gap brand new at 40-50% off pretty much always). But the higher end sought after stuff and brands I mark up a little because i know it will sell.

Also, for gear, you need to list a price. Because as I buyer I'd look at your post and think "well I have no idea if she is expecting $100 or $25 for that dock a tot and I aint got time for messing with that". I tend to list my gear for lower than what other stuff is listed for because I don't want flakes; I don't want to negotiate on a few dollars. I want someone to see a screaming deal and buy it asap. Also take good pictures and save any correspondence if its like, a stroller, because people are crazy and be like..."you didn't tell me about this minute scratch I want my money back"

For stuff I can't get rid of I find a charity and take the tax write off.

Do you have something like just between friends sale in your area? It's a traveling consignment sale that comes to our area twice a year. You get 60-70% of what your item sells for depending on if you help at the sale. They handle all advertising and payment. The sales here last about a week and it's amazing how much stuff gets sold.

@catlady: oh I didn't realize you could search for that, good call! I held on to everything from lo1 so am new to selling. I am seeing that some things are more in demand, like I've had lots of people asking about a bumbo I posted but no one wants my UB bassinet since it's an older model. We've ended up just giving things to pregnant friends rather than trying to sell for the most part

I usually try my local moms group facebook groups first, then expand to craigslist for things that don't sell.

If you are using facebook groups, you can do a search for previously sold stuff that is similar and see how much it went for. Then price yours accordingly. I've noticed that some things are in demand and some go for super cheap or even free most of the time. For example, I can't even give away my high chair but I've sold 2 play mats easily (priced low).

For smaller items (clothes, sleep sacks, etc), I sell on ebay and just ship instead of doing it locally.

How have your experiences selling baby gear been? Do you have tips or tricks?

I feel like I'm doing it badly! I've been posting things lo2 grows out of on local Facebook boards and mostly get crickets. Or someone will say they're interested and then disappear. I also never know how much to ask for things! I list it as "best offer" and then they just ask me how much I want, I say something like 50% off the original price, and then they disappear rather than negotiate. What am I doing wrong, lol??
