@mjane: Congrats! That's awesome!

I also wanted to add that my RE now disagrees with the diagnosis of PCOS, so disregard my previous comments.

Just wanted to update everyone that we got a completely unexpected BFP on our first cycle after stopping BCP. Really, really shocking (mostly in a good way). I have no clue if it will stick, but I'm currently 6 weeks. Amazing/terrifying! I'm seeing an acupuncturist now since I'd already made the appointment... we'll see how it goes, I guess!

@mjane: Thanks! I was shocked and totally thrilled the 90% static held up for me with metformin.

My PCOS doctor is not an RE although I think most probably are REs or at least OB/GYN. She is technically Internal Medicine, but is a part of a med school/teaching hospital's Center for PCOS. I found her by going on google and typing my city and pcos doctor. I live in a city with several teaching hospitals and at least 1 other one also has a whole Center for PCOS through their fertility practice.

I also took the metformin through week 14 which is somewhat controversial. Some docs in my OB practice were ok with it others were not, but that was what my PCOS doc recommended.

Oh, and I wanted to add that I am also doing acupuncture and Chinese herbs. This is my first cycle on both Metformin and herbs, and my first cycle on the diet, so I'm not sure which will help if we do get pregnant, but we shall see! I am doubtful. I suppose you get that way with TTC...

@mjane: Hey there! I have "thin" PCOS. I am 5'8'' and weigh 156. I have been on birth control since I was 11 years old (!!!! not because I was sexually active, I swear lol) to control cysts, they even thought about doing surgery! I am currently on Metformin 500 mg once daily, but would like to increase. We conceived in March but lost the pregnant at 5 weeks. We have been trying for going on six months now. My testosterone is a little high and my estrogen is super low. I have an appointment to meet with a gynecologist in September... So, we shall see! The plan as far as I know will be to get on birth control and/or Spironolactone for three months, then jumpstart ovulation with a round of Clomid. That's his usual plan anyway, it all depends on what he sees in my specific case. I will update when I know!

Since I have a BMI of 24, I will try weight loss and dietary modifications. My goal is to get to a BMI of 20. I currently have eliminated simple sugars on the 17 day diet and am trying to eat raw foods and sugars. I read an interesting article on the endocrine system and sugars, so even though you may not be overweight, the sugars can still affect your fertility. I will see if I can find it and post it.

Best of luck! Just thought I'd share my story.

Hi mjane! I have been lurking for a long time too and your post pushed me over the edge to finally join.

I have thin PCOS too and was diagnosed 9 years ago at age 20 although I always doubted the diagnosis since I was thin. I went off the pill last August and had cycles that were 60-90 days That was enough to convince me the diagnosing Doc was correct and I found a PCOS doctor where I live to confirm and help TTC.

I had to wait 3.5 months (!!!) to see the PCOS doc, but it was worth it. Bloodwork confirmed PCOS and the doc prescribed metformin saying she has had a 90% success rate with it and thin PCOS. I started with 500mg for a week, then 1000mg then 1500mg etc. I got pregnant almost right away and am currently almost 27 weeks!

@mjane: Thank you : ) The acupuncturist I used is affiliated with a fertility clinic but that's not why I went to him... I'm a journalist and I ended up interviewing him, right around the same time my periods stopped. So I emailed him after the interview and started going for treatment. It took about five months to get my periods back, but for the first few months I wasn't drinking the herbs (they can make your skin worse and I was getting married) and I started ovulating again just after starting them.

He told me acupuncture is great for thin type PCOS because dieting etc isn't going to make any difference, as it would with normal PCOS. In some ways I remember thinking thin type was so much worse, but I'm so thankful I stumbled across the acupuncture!

Thanks for the welcome, ladies! So, so, so good to hear from other people in my situation. Really.

@modern daisy: yikes! Constant period! Don't know what's worse... :) From your post on the Bloomberg thing sounds like you are a New Yorker also? Here's to TTC while surrounded by a never-ending parade of strollers! (We live in Brooklyn.) Good luck to you and I'm excited to hear how things go for you!

@loveletter: I hope the next rounds of Clomid go well for you! I'll be thinking of you. Our plan right now is also to pursue adoption if relatively low-level interventions don't work out... but it's hard to know at this point how we'll feel down the road. I will definitely check out The Blood Sugar Solution! I'm always wary of changes in diet because I've had a number of gynos, and an endocrinologist, over the years who have cautioned me not to do anything that would cause weight loss (apparently estrogen is stored in fat?) and my weight does go down easily (which I've always suspected has something to do with insulin and PCOS, though I have no idea, really). But addressing the blood sugar thing with diet HAS been in the back of my mind since I was first diagnosed with PCOS and it sounds like it's worth a shot!

@travelgirl1: congratulations! That's so fantastic! I have two sisters who have undiagnosed thin PCOS (we all think), and both needed acupuncture to conceive but both did get pregnant without any other interventions. It's no joke! Just curious: did you go to an acupuncturist/herbalist who was affiliated with a fertility clinic, or was it old-school?

And, since I'm the new girl here, can I ask if there's a PM feature? Seems like there are just these "wall" things... is that right?

Hi @mjane! I have thin type PCOS and I'm now 26 weeks pregnant!

I'd been on and off birth control pills for years and each time my periods were dodgy, so I knew there was a problem early. I came off BC again a year before the wedding to see what could happen, and went for fertility testing once my periods slowed then stopped altogther.

One doctor there told me there was a 50% chance I'd need IVF one day, while the other said that was nonsense and she'd probably be able to get me pregnant with a combination of ovulation stimulating drugs and if that didn't work, adding an IUI.

Anyway, we weren't ready to start trying then but I still wanted to do something, so I went to an acupuncturist and started drinking herbs too. My periods came back, I started ovulating regularly and in January, decided we were ready to try.

I had cycle monitoring at the fertility clinic just to make sure I was ovulating and because of that they were able to tell us exactly when to do the deed - and we got pregnant that first time!

I didn't take any medication at all and the only treatment I had was acupunture and herbs. I remember being so disheartened by my diagnosis, but am so, so happy that I decided to stick with the acupuncture.

Good luck on your journey, if you have any questions about any of it send me a message!

@mjane: Hi and welcome! I have "thin PCOS" and was diagnosed last August.

I can tell you a little about what we tried...

From August to December, we tried to get pregnant, using only progesterone (I believe it was Provera) to regulate my cycles. I'm pretty sure I did not ovulate during that time.

From January to April, I did Clomid - I ovulated but didn't get pregnant.

Then, we took two months off to have an HSG procedure done to make sure my fallopian tubes were open. During that time I read a great book called "The Blood Sugar Solution" - it has a section in it about PCOS and it's tie to insulin resistance. I followed the diet plan - which was basically a low-carb diet, and some herbal supplements, and I felt the best that I have ever felt.. more energy, less emotional, and I ovulated both months on my own!

Now we are back on Clomid and finishing up the last two months, and if that doesn't work out, we are going the adoption route, rather than other fertility treatments. I really recommend "The Blood Sugar Solution". Even if you don't need to lose weight, changing your diet may really be helpul to you! I think I will continue to stick to the diet - it really has helped me to feel better and get my homones back into balance.

Also, there is a really great podcast called "The PCOS Challenge"... a lot of the podcasts have centered around trying to get pregnant. Definitely check it out.. there's more info here: http://www.pcoschallenge.com/

Hi! I basically have PCOS in opposite land too. I am thin and at the bottom of my BMI scale. I've also had a constant period since getting off the pill in March instead of the usual symptom of not having a period at all. So reading about how to treat PCOS online always leaves me scratching my head since the #1 thing doctors recommend is to lose weight so periods come more frequently.

I'm in the early stages and not officially TTC yet (just preparing to) but so far my Dr. has recommended stress reduction and acupuncture. I'm also taking Provera which will force me to have a 'real' period (the bleeding stopped once I started taking it, hooray!) at which point they will run some more tests. But ultimately both doctors I have seen seem to point to Clomid, so I think that's going to be where i end up.

Good luck and let me know how things go with you!!

Hi there! I'm new posting here (been lurking for a while, though!). And I'm wondering if there's anyone here who has experience with "thin PCOS." I'm about to start TTC and finding that a lot of the resources online are geared towards women with more typical PCOS symptoms--and for a lot of these women, losing weight seems to be a big help in their efforts TTC. I'd love to hear from women who have been diagnosed with "thin PCOS" and are TTC or did conceive... What strategies and resources did you find most helpful?

Just a little bit of background on me: I'm 29. I was diagnosed with PCOS in college. I've been on BC pills for years (on and off--mostly on--since I was 15 or 16, to regulate periods) and am planning to stop taking them shortly. I may give acupuncture a try before hormonal methods, but I'd love to hear about people's different experiences!
