I noticed DD bite getting worse one day when I looked over at her and saw her profile. She was 2.3 yrs old. We went cold turkey and it really wasn't a big issue. It was a couple nights of it taking longer to fall asleep. But it's really wasn't bad!

Good luck!

I'm curious how this might go if you had another baby in the house that used a pacifier. Right now my daughter is approaching 2 and I was going to try taking it away even though she only uses it while sleeping. I'm a little afraid she might start to try to take it from my son (8 months) who has it whenever he wants. Right now she doesn't try to take it and will even give it to him if she sees it lying around, but I can't imagine if she is going to sleep and crying for hers that she would be as kind.

@2PeasinaPod: I think the idea will be to literally throw them away once we pull the plug (no pun intended!) so that we aren't tempted to go back to it. He's such a good sleeper, but truly does seem dependent on them...I'm dreading it!

@winniebee: I think consistency is key...stand your ground and don't give in. Try not to do it when he's sick or if he's getting his 2 year molars. And just expect that he might need some extra help going to sleep for a week or so.

We were similar to @catlady - DS1 turned 2 and we decided it was time to get rid of the binky. We prepared him and started telling him he was a big boy and binkies were for babies. If he took it out or dropped it, we would hide it. If it was out of sight, it was out of mind with him. One day, I told him that we weren't going to do binky for nap, and he accepted it and went to sleep, but had a tough time with bedtime that night. The next day he whined a lot and asked for it and I told him that I gave them all to the babies that needed them. Day 2, he totally forgot about them. So much easier than I thought it was going to be!

I was so worried about this but it ended up being surprisingly easy. For a couple weeks, I made a big deal about her being a big girl and how the binky fairy would come soon to take her binkies away and leave her a toy. One morning we gathered them all up and left them for the binky fairy, and when she got back from daycare, I had left some dolls in their place. Ironically, she didn't even like the new dolls but she totally accepted the fact that she couldn't have binkies any more. I think she had like one weird night of sleep and that was it.

My first wasn't hard - we made a big deal and basically traded it for a stuffed animal, then said it was gone. She cried some for nap but basically was fine. For my second however (24m) I really need tips because it's basically his lovey! He adores it. Only uses in car and crib but he's got a face rash now and it probably needs to go.

R had his first dental visit this morning and his bite is already affected by pacifier use! His top teeth don't come anywhere near touching the bottom teeth. He's 25 months. So, gotta get going on this weaning business. Tell me about your experience in weaning your 2 year old from the pacifier....how did you approach it? Was it awful? Did sleep go to hell?

Thanks!
