@lakeviewmama17: my LO has never been nursed or rocked to sleep. I wanted her to start learning to self-soothe and put herself to sleep from the start vs. forming a habit I'd have to then break.

Thanks so much for these tips! So when doing this were you guys super consistent on the drowsy but awake thing even from an early age? Or did you on occasion nurse to sleep, rock, etc.?

We've been using Moms on Call with #2. He has done drowsy but awake since the beginning. In the swing (not MOC approved) for the first 4 weeks, then crib since then. He rarely fusses enough for me to go back in (they say 3-5 minutes, but if he cries for 2, I go in). Maybe once a day? And then at this age (10 weeks), he does the twilight sleep, so I occasionally soothe in the middle of a nap, too. I don't let him cry at night because I'm terrified of ruining my toddler's sleep (he's been a difficult sleeper since birth). The most he's ever fussed is through 2 soothing cycles, so maybe 5 minutes?

On the other hand, there is no.way.in.hell this would have worked with my first. At least not eating only every 3 hours. He was way too little. They do say not to start until over 12 pounds, which he wasn't until, um...4 or 5 months I think, so there is that, but it just wouldn't have been realistic. This kiddo is totally different and rocking the MOC stuff.

I loved MOC for the schedule. We didn't do much of any crying until 2-3 months .. I can't remember. But the schedule of when to put them to bed, when they need naps, etc. really helped. I found out I was waiting too long at first. If I waited an hour of awake time (seems so short now) she wouldn't sleep. 45 min of awake time and she'd take a great little nap. Stuff like that.

From the very beginning we started putting DD down drowsy but awake. She would fuss for anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes before falling asleep (we did not try to soothe as she never fussed too long, IMO). Now at 3 months old, she hardly fusses at all at night and it's only minimal fussing for naps.

ETA: she has been only minimally fussing for a couple of weeks now. So I guess she probably reached that point closer to the 2.5 month mark.

Curious for experiences with Moms on Call-like approaches to very early gentle sleep training. Not interested in a debate, but just curious of the experiences of those who have tried. There are of course variations on the same theme from Moms on Call, Baby Whisperer, Babywise, etc., but they all suggest putting your baby down drowsy but awake and allowing a few minutes of crying before you resettle them, resisting the urge to pick them up when possible.

What I am really interested in is what the overall amount of fusing or light crying and duration of it (in terms of days/weeks) for those who put their babies down "drowsy but awake" from a very early age (e.g. a few weeks old). At what point did they start going down for naps and nighttime with minimal to no fussing? And what would you do for naptimes when the fussing kept them up for quite awhile into their nap window?

Would love to hear your experiences.
