Another option if you don't want to take a pill everyday and want something to worry about less often is Ortho Evra, the birth control patch. It worked great for me. You put a new patch on each week for three weeks, and the last week you don't put one on and get a period. Repeat every month.

Another Nuva Ring lover here. I am not a huge fan of hormonal birth control, but it was by far the best I tried.

My midwife from the birth center just stopped by to check on me, and she said nuvaring was the most popular one she prescribes, and it would probably be good for me, since I'm not breastfeeding, and she knows how terrible I am at taking pills.

I'll probably go with it...if I end up hating it, I'll just stop and figure out something else.

Thanks, everyone, for your experiences.

I was on Nuvaring for over 8 years. It was really easy. No pills to remember.

If I were to go back onto a hormonal BC, I would choose the Nuvaring. It will be a couple years since I want to get pregnant.

I loved the Nuvaring. I experienced way worse side effects on Orthotri, yaz and loestrin. I don' t know if it was related but it took us about a year of TTC to get pregnant. I had a weak ovulation and borderline low progesterone.

Nuvaring was hands-down the worst BC method I ever tried. Vaginal dryness, total loss of sex drive, terrible headaches, breast soreness for 2 months straight, and nausea.

But I know some people that love it. It just depends on how your body reactes to synthetic hormones.

@katiew92081: No shame :) I went on NuvaRing for the same reason... Consistency is key with the other options, and I couldn't be consistent. I don't like hormonal because it makes me crazy. I really don't like any BC at all, but that's another discussion...

I used Nuvaring for only 2 months. It gave me awful headaches and I was practically suicidal. I also didn't like taking it out for sex, which I did because I found it uncomfortable to leave in. But I know a few people who love it.

I liked using the ring. No big problems with it but I used it when I wasn't trying to get pregnant. I've been on pills, the shot, the ring, & more pills. I've had 1 early MC. After this experience I'm against using hormonal BC. If I was in your situation I would wait the 6 weeks PP that your suppose to wait for sex and make a dession then. Right now your hormones & emotions are probably thinking for you. Its a lot easier for me to say this though because I am not in your situation

Between the pill and the Nuvaring, I'd probably pick the ring for convenience sake. I've been on both and it is nice to not have to remember to take a pill every day. That being said, I went off the Nuvaring because it killed my sex drive. Most hormonal BC has this effect on me but it seemed to be even worse with NuvaRing. My friends that have been on it have experienced the same thing.

Yeah, if I'd had that experience once with Mirena, I'd be ready to jump ship for a new method too! And NuvaRing is pretty great.

Generally Mirena has a comparable or faster return to fertility than the combined hormonal methods, but, every person is different and hopefully NuvaRing will suit your cycle a little better.

One tip for the NuvaRing (especially for someone used to the convenience of an IUD) -- sign up for the text alerts to remind you to remove and insert your rings. Makes it sooooo much easier not to forget.

Nuvaring was my favorite BC! So easy, I has less side effects, the only downside was the cost, but that depends on your ins & when I told my dr I was paying $40 a month for them she gave me like 8 of them & told me to store them in the fridge. I would absolutely go back on it in the future.

@lilyofthewest: I had a Mirena and it took 8 months for my cycle to be a predictable pattern. Plus, getting it removed is a hassle to me, and stopping a nuvaring or pills would be way simpler than paying a doctor way too much to take it out.

Price isn't a factor for us, really...we just want what's best for us.

Mirena doesn't take long to "get out of your system". You can get pregnant the very first cycle after it is removed -- just like stopping NuvaRing. And though you can use Mirena for up to 5 years, you can also discontinue using it as soon as you want to.

That said, I liked the NuvaRing quite well when I used it several years ago. I only stopped because research came out that indicates that is risky for women with migraine headaches (which I have) to use BC with estrogen.

On other thing to look into would be when your health insurance plan renews for the year. Until it does, you'll be paying copays/coinsurance for BC. If cost is a factor, check the price differential between paying for the Mirena (may have a copay or coinsurance -- sometimes coinsurances are hefty) and the NuvaRing (might be a tier 3 copay, ouch).

@littlebittyhouse: @Foodnerd81: @JoJoGirl: @Weagle: I actually agree with you all that hormonal stuff is awful. BUT, my husband and I aren't good at thinking about condoms and other non-hormonal things, and we'd be irresponsible and just throw caution to the wind. At least the hormones give me some sort of barrier from myself.

We both *know* that it wouldn't be a good idea to make a baby anytime before the fall (to let me recover physically, to move into our house, and to heal a bit from our loss), but it's something that we both wanted so much that we would not go about doing it the correct way. we're so responsible with everything else in our lives...I'm not really sure why this is such a weakness for both of us.

Like I said above, if dd had survived, we'd be done, and a Mirena would be a no-brainer. But, now of course we don't feel done, and we're emotional and not in our right minds right now, so the hormones have to be there to keep us in check, but not as long term as the IUD would be.

@Foodnerd81: Agree. Your body will be adjusting anyway to everything, so adding hormones into the mix, then taking them away might be a lot of adjusting if you want to start TTC again in say 6 months. Non-hormone is probably a better way to go.

Honestly, if it was for less than a year, I probably wouldn't want to do any hormonal birth control. Even though the ring is easier in that you only have to think about it 2 times a month (put in, take out) it's the same amount of hormones in you system as the pill. So for me, I'd just use something non-hormonal for now. That said, I was super paranoid about coming off the pill and it messing with my cycles so I came off 4 months before we started trying, which it turns out was unnecessary because I did ovulate the first month. But for me, there was an adjustment period of a few months getting used to any pill, then another adjustment of a few months coming off of it... so if I went on for 6 months or so, I'd be a hormonal mess the whole time, which wouldn't be worth it. You might deal with hormones better than me though!

I've never used the ring but all my friends who did loved it-- and come to think of it, I think they all have babies (planned) now!

Do any of you ladies use the nuvaring? When I was pregnant, I was 100% sold on the Mirena, cause I believed we were done after this. But given the situation now, and the time it took for my cycle to adjust, and the fact that we may not really be done with making babies after all, we want to possibly go with something that doesn't take as long to leave my system. I can't do pills...I'm terrible at them, I really am. The nuvaring seems ideal, since I only have to pay attention every few weeks.

Did any of you use the nuvaring and then get ku after stopping? How long did it take for your body to adjust?

I'll be 32 this year, and dh 33, so we feel like if we're gonna try one more time for a baby, it'll have to be sooner than later...but not til later this year. If for some reason we change our minds and decide we're done, then I'll switch to Mirena, but in the meantime we feel like we'd need something more short-term.
