@winniebee: Ooooh good idea to update!

I received my awful AMH results (0.35) and high FSH (13) around the same time as winniebee and found out I was pregnant a couple weeks later. This was a lucky thread for a few of us I believe!!

I wanted to update this in case anyone ever searches for low AMH threads. I never ended up meeting with the RE. The month after I weaned DS2 fully, we got and stayed pregnant (well, I'm 12 weeks now and all ultrasounds and NIPT testing came back normal). My progesterone was normal this pregnancy as well. So, for me, AMH wasn't the end all and be all. My doctor still isn't totally convinced it was nursing, but I am.

My AMH was .15. FSH normal. Tried for about a year before getting tested/seeing an RE. Only took three months with DD1. We were dealing with secondary infertility, and got incredibly lucky. I did one round of Gonal-F on a very high dose with IUI and got pregnant. I also did acupuncture. We did not mess around with Clomid, etc. My doc initially advised us to just do IVF, but was supportive of an injectible round. DH and I were not prepared to pay for IVF (because were lucky to already have DD). This one round of Gonal-F was all we were willing to do/pay for. After about $8000 for meds and appointments, I was thrilled that the IUI worked. DD2 is due in April.

@winniebee: The real life friends really helped me get through this year of infertility plus 2 miscarriages. Each of them has been through that plus more. One thing that you have in your favor is the normal FSH levels. That might mean that quality isn't a huge concern. If you want to try the diet my acupuncturist gave me, I'm happy to email you my handout (though I haven't really gotten to see how much it works yet... got pregnant the 2nd month of doing it and although I'm still going to acupuncture and doing the diet, the miscarriage meant I haven't been able to try again until last last week and now I'm in the 2WW).

@Shantuck: Thanks for sharing! I don't know anyone IRL who has had these issues...and I was fine for about a week and now doubt / fear is creeping in and I don't have my RE appointment for over a month. I keep reminding myself that we conceived naturally with very little problem for both boys, so to keep at it :bummed:

@winniebee: I shared my info above but I also have two "real life" friends with low AMH who have had success stories. One friend did ivf several years ago (had twins) but wanted another and wasn't really interested in going through that again. She just had her third child a couple weeks ago by getting pregnant naturally after two miscarriages over the span of a year. For her it was just a matter of keeping at it and trying to catch a good egg. She conceived the first cycle after the 2nd miscarriage and was about to officially give up.

My other "real life" friend had undetectable AMH and went through several failed cycles of IVF. She started doing acupuncture, changed her diet (we go to the same acupuncturist and there is a 10 page handout on what you can and cannot eat!), and took DHEA and CoQ10. She conceived naturally on a cycle while waiting to start another IVF (she had a few losses along the way as well). She's about to start trying for number 2 but is a little nervous about the time commitment of acupuncture, the strict fertility diet, etc.

I keep telling myself that it's just a matter of keeping at it and that it may take longer but it isn't impossible.

@winniebee: I understand. I'm still going for number 2 though. I just never pictured having "an only child" so I'm going to keep going. It's taking a toll though so at some point I'd just have to be thankful for what we have (which I totally am) but I do really want one more!

@winniebee: I do agree it is a roll of the dice. That's how I look at how I lucked out with DD. We are going to try fertility treatments though but I still do hope for a natural lucky BFP in the meantime. Lots of luck to you.

@Trailmix: thanks  my husband did some research (he's a doc but not an OB or RE) and he tends to agree this is just bad luck and that its just a roll of the dice after age 35. I'll still consult with the RE to see what their thoughts are.

@winniebee: I'm right here with you. Just got my labs back and AMH is 0.35. Frack. My FSH is also high at 13 though so it's not looking good at all. I meet with RE again on the 17th. I am thinking of trying the CoQ10 and acupuncture to start. I just can't keep going through more losses. It's taking a toll. I'm sure you'd agree.

I am sort of with your OB in that if everything else is normal, I wouldn't read too much into only AMH levels. I had very low AMH (.3) and very high FSH (20.3), which gave me the diagnosis of Dominished Ovarian Reserve (DOR) and I needed intervention to get pregnant. But my understanding is that all our hormones work together and so if the majority are normal, that indicates a relatively-functioning endocrine system. I'm sorry for your losses but my gut feeling on your situation is that it's just been awful, awful luck :(

@winniebee: yeah, i probably wouldn't go with what an OB says. They are not experts in getting people pregnant. Believe me, I've learned that the hard way and I think that a majority of us that are going through infertility would concur. Good luck on deciding what to do!

@winniebee: i'd go with the REI doc, since you're more likely to trust/believe what he/she says and the options they present. not saying there's anything wrong with the OB, but you know how it is with generalists vs. specialists! ;)

ETA - I spoke with my OB and she said that because my FSH was normal, she is optimistic that I could conceive naturally and that my reserve is OK....but the internet is saying otherwise She does want me to meet with the RE though, even if I choose not to do anything beyond that.

@winniebee: It's a more easily absorbed version of CoQ10 - you can buy in pill or liquid form. This is what I bought and am starting this week because since it's liquid form, it supposedly works faster.

@winniebee: I read that it could cause stomach upset but I have never had that issue. The one side effect I did have was that it can cause insomnia but I was taking it before crawling into bed. I now take it in the morning and no longer have any issues. You do need to take it with food containing fat in it as most kinds are fat soluble only.

I have an AMH of 0.79 so I'm right there with you. However, I also have slightly elevated FSH so at least you aren't also battling that. I highly recommend taking ubiquinol and doing acupuncture as well. I've been trying for year now and the only two times I have gotten pregnant at all have been after I started ubiquinol and acupuncture 6 months ago. I'm obviously not a success story yet but I do feel like I'm moving in the right direction. I found the book "It Starts With The Egg" by Rebecca Fett particularly helpful for understanding the issue as well as for suggestions on supplements, etc.

I had a history of low AMH, but some REs don't focus on that number. I only asked my RE recently because it had been low in the past. I was told early on that my AMH level doesn't change, but over the 3 years of IF, it did go up and down. I ultimately was diagnosed with DOR (Dimished Ovarian Reserve) and PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome).

I'm not sure how much your OB can tell you or knows about it, which is probably why they suggested you see an RE.

I had to refresh my memory on AMH and found this was helpful. http://www.advancedfertility.com/amh-fertility-test.htm

Interpretation of anti-mullerian hormone levels and chances for conception

There are some problems involved with interpretation of AMH hormone levels. Because the test has not been in routine use for many years, the levels considered to be "normal" are not yet clarified and agreed on by all experts.

@winniebee: one thing that you could take to improve egg quality is CoQ10 - it is a supplement that you can get at walgreens and many RE's suggest it to help with egg quality for us going into IVF. I realize that isn't a path you plan on taking, but it might be worth a shot taking? Good luck!

@winniebee: Sorry for dropping all the IF acronyms with out explanation. @Amorini: covered it. I just included that as the reason we ultimately moved on to IVF. The naturopath I saw was great and had a lot of experience with fertility issues. I  her. Maybe there is someone in your area that does this.
