We sent them and I love getting them. LO was born around thanksgiving as well so I just took a picture of her sleeping when she was a week old and popped it onto a birth announcement/holiday template on shutterfly. with the coupon codes etc you can get a good deal, but I do think it is totally your call.

I also think that if you send them in a few months, people will still be happy to get them. I love having a fridge covered in baby pictures!

Since we have zero plans of posting any photos of our children on facebook, twitter, myspace, instagram, etc, we'll send a birth announcement to DH's family that lives 500miles away, and won't be there for the birth or see their grandchild for a while probably. Also, all our friends live in our home state, so they'll get a birth announcement in the mail as well.

I did ours primarily for tradition but all of DH's family is on the other side of the country and I want one for my RE too.

As far as cost, throughout my pregnancy I got lots of shutterfly and tiny prints coupons and I bought a zulily deal that was $20 for $40. All in all I got 40 with envelopes and address stickers for $35. Add them on fb and email for specials and discounts.

I have a soft sport for stationary and snail mail, so I've always looked forward to having one done. Plus we live abroad and my friends and fam back home wouldn't have gotten to see her otherwise. For us it was just a way to share the news. It's also a great memento to add to the books.

I picked out everything beforehand so all I had to do was insert her picture and add her details. Since you're due during the holidays, would it be possible to make it a Christmas card instead?

They probably are a good idea in two situations: (a) Some people are really hesitant to use facebook to announce a birth. They aren't keen on posting their child's full name or photographs of their children online. So it makes a lot of sense in that situation. (b) Also, a lot of people have relatives that live far away and don't use facebook or email (older relatives, usually). So birth announcements give these relatives something tangible to show friends.

Wow, a lot of great responses from everyone. DH said he just wanted to send out a few, so I'm good with that, but the one that's both of our favorites would probably be around $70 to buy the minimum and mail. Not sure I like them *that* much, lol.

I've never sent out birth announcements either- that's what Facebook and texts are for, lol. I do like getting them, but I think they're kind of outdated. Once upon a time, relatives may really have no idea you had a baby until they got the announcement, but I think that's just about impossible now. I am planning to send out a family picture Christmas card and will include the stats on that.

I think it is fun, kind of like sending a postcard. I'm not really in touch with any of my extended family, and I certainly don't expect gifts from them. I just feel like it's a nice way to let them know what is going on in my life. Also, neither of us do much facebook, so facebook people still don't know we are expecting in less than 2 months.

We did them for two reasons.
1. So family and friends who don't have FB could see him. We just recently moved far away from our friends and family so most didn't visit.
2. We used them as a "thank you" for all the people who sent cards/gifts/flowers when E was born :-)

We have a lot of friends and family who are older (and therefore aren't on social media) and who we don't see too often. These also happen to be a lot of the same people who came to my baby showers and who are genuinely interested in our lives. I felt it was a nice way to let them know that DD had arrived.

To me it's also just a nice, formal, traditional way of announcing your baby's arrival in the world. Sometimes I think too much of our communication takes place online and there's something to be said for something tangible.

I've enjoyed getting them from friends, but we didn't do them and nobody seemed to notice. Most of our families are pretty close by and saw M when she was fairly young. My friends all saw our announcement photo on FB and my parents emailed photos to family. Also, she was born at the end of September so everyone got a Christmas card with a photo of her too.

1) A lot of our family is either a) not on social media and/or b) live too far away to come see him as a newborn (most of my family still hasn't met him).

2) A lot of DH's family is very traditional and it was expected of us.

3) I liked having it, and most everyone we sent them to liked receiving it. FB is great for sharing photos and all, but I think there's something nice about getting something you can touch and put up on your fridge in the mail--something that isn't a bill, anyway! Two of our friends kept E's up on their fridge for 8 months!

I always have loved getting them and figured you would only have the opportunity once! But, we also have relatives spread across the country/globe that aren't on social media and that we don't see often. We kept the costs WAY down and the quality awesome by having them designed on etsy (approx $15) and then having them printed on Vistaprint (with a good coupon code) on heavy cardstock. Makes it really affordable!

I did them because they're cute and who doesn't like getting some happy mail. And maybe I'm a little old fashioned and still really like paper invites/announcements/thank you notes.

If you really just want one for the baby book, the RE's office, and people who would actually keep them, you could use a site like Tiny Prints - I think their minimum order is 5. Nobody needs to know that it wasn't widely distributed :)
