I always pumped before bed, since fresh breast milk lasts like 12 hours at room temp, I would measure a feeding into a bottle and just leave it on the counter when my husband took night shift so I could sleep. If he STTN (ha, rare!) then he got it first thing in the morning. Otherwise we also kept a stock of ready to go formula bottles that he didn't need to warm up.

Last night was a disaster and I ended up nursing him :-/. The bottle warmer took forever so it was lukewarm at best and we used formula because I don't have a ton of extra breastmilk. He used to take cold formula bottles just fine but I think he's too used to BM from the tap or warmed from daycare. *sigh*.

Our bedrooms are all on a different floor than our kitchen. Every night I would take bottles, measured formula and set then on the counter in our guest bath. Make the bottle and feed. LO was formula fed and stopped night feeds by about 4.5 months.

We premake more bottles than we will need. When she wakes up, I go get her & DH puts the bottle in a big cup of hot water. It only takes a few minutes in hot water to get to room temperature. LO will drink a bottle at any temp but I prefer to not give them to her straight from the fridge.

Have you tried DH bottle feeding at night? Your LO may not be so into it. For a while LO didn't care but as she became more alert/aware she only wants me at night, whether it's a boob or a bottle.

We always had pre-made bottles in the fridge. Then whichever baby woke up would come downstairs with us while the bottles heated. We then went back to their room and fed in the semi-dark.

I brought bottles filled with room temp water up at night along with formula pre-measured in a formula dispenser (I highly recommend the Dr. Brown's dispenser). When baby wakes up, just dump the formula in the bottle, shake, and feed. I never used a bottle warmer, DS was always used to having room temp bottles.

Our bedroom is super far from the nursery, so I bring the formula container upstairs at night. When baby wakes, I pop into the master bathroom and get warm water from the tap, and then mix the formula and give him the bottle.
SO much more work than breastfeeding, but my supply dried up, so I've got no other choice :(

Thanks everyone! I think I'll either pump and we'll use that or we'll keep formula + water and bottle warmer by the bed and ready to go. I forgot to mention that our kitchen is 2 floors below our bedroom, so I wanted to avoid needing to go down there at all costs. For right now I think we should start with one feeding a night and see how it goes.

We had a bottle warmer and at least one bottle of pumped milk in the fridge. So he would just heat it in the bottle warmer and give it to her. If, he needed it faster, he would use formula - heat the water in the microwave for a few seconds and then add the formula.

I made sure to pump right before bed, and then fed her first thing in the morning.

Since you EBF you will need to do something with your boobs during the night or you may hurt your supply and up with engorgement/blocked ducts. I would recommend either pumping over night or slowly introduce the bottle so you don't have too much pain/discomfort.

We were almost always formula at night and we started pre-filling bottles of water next to the bed and keeping little travel containers of pre-measured formula out. And we'd just dump, shake, and stick them in her mouth right away. Prepping it was key! And we always did room temperature water.

LO generally STTN now but when she had wakings I would prepare the bottle before I went to bed and put it in the fridge (either pumped milk or the concentrate formula, whatever I had on hand). Then I would pop it in the warmer while I changed her. By the time she had a new diaper on the formula was ready. The nursery and kitchen are very close together though !

oh, and in the summer months, I would just keep the bottle with breast milk next to me and feed it to LO room temp. She took it just fine. But now that it's winter, the bottle is much colder and I do have to heat it.

@ShootingStar: I have a friend that uses a powder formula and she pre measures powder out into a bottle and then has a bottle of room temp water next to it on her bedside table. When her baby cries, she just immediately mixes the formula and then sticks it into a bottle warmer (she keeps it on her nightstand at night) and then picks up her LO. Then the bottle is ready a minute later.

I EP, so I just keep a bottle of pumped milk next to the bed (I usually go to bed at 10 or 10:30 pm and LO usually wakes to feed around 1-2 am) and then use the Dr. Brown's travel bottle warmer that I keep on my nightstand. It's basically just a thermos that keeps water super hot. The bottle heats to lukewarm in about a minute so it's not long for LO to wait.

I generally stick the paci in her mouth which will calm her down until it's ready.

Born free makes a bottle warmer that also acts as a mini cooler for a couple bottles. You could keep the premaid bottles by the bedside and no need to wander into the kitchen. Haven't tried this myself yet but soon...

We have baggies of pumped milk defrosting in the fridge overnight-- would just heat them up in a mug of hot water, pour them into the bottle, and feed (it would take a lot longer than just having me pop out a titty, though).

We wouldn't give her a bottle at each MOTN wake up-- sometimes she would fall back asleep with some soothing. So I'd have enough for 2-3 wake ups on hand?

For me, I always woke up a couple of minutes before Lo woke up to feed. During that time, I would have a premade bottle in the fridge ready for me to grab. I would then put it in a mug of hot water that I microwaved (or keep a carafe of warm water) and swirl it around, test the temp on my wrist, and then feed.

Okay so maybe this is an idiotic question, but can someone explain how you do bottles for MOTN wake ups? I'd like to start having DH do some of the feeds and I'm not sure at this point if he'll use pumped milk (which will require more pumping :-/) or formula.

Right now I'm EBF though we've used formula in the past. I nurse for all the night wakings and as much as it sucks to get up over and over, it's pretty easy. Pick up the baby, feed him, he falls asleep, put him back in the PnP.

But bottles seem much more difficult. How do you know how much to have on hand? DS might wake up twice, he might wake up 5 times. Do you heat the bottles? He used to be really good about taking cold bottles, but the last time we tried that in the middle of the night, he screamed bloody murder. How do you keep the baby from melting down in the time it takes to prepare a bottle?
