@regberadaisy: Visuals are really helpful! So are short term and long term rewards. Behavior charts have worked really well with my LO who is 3 but we have done them for at least the past year.

I would encourage a chart over a jar at this age. My LO liked getting a star on her chart plus a sticker she could wear for every success. We also did little and big rewards. For example our last chart was to get her to fall asleep by herself in her room. Every day she did it, we put a star on the chart and gave her a sticker. 4 stars=1 nail polish. 16 stars=frozen the movie. Now she falls asleep on her own!

It is really important to do the chart quickly for the reinforcement, so we would do it once she woke up. We hung it on her door at eye level so she could see it too.

Good luck!

I have a reward chart for pooping in the potty. I made 10 blank squares = picture of ice cream cone so she understands she needs multiple stars to get her big prize. It's been working really well so far!

We do coins earned and he "buys" new toys. It works for him because he's a numbers kid and he wants to "buy" stuff all the time. We started with low cost items and added higher cost. He is 4 (two weeks ago) and still does well with it.

I think you need to start small.

Reward her for staying in bed for 1 night

Once she masters that then you can do it for 2 nights, 3 nights, etc.

We have been doing rewards for a long time so right now we use small jars and fill them with pom-poms - once the jar is full they get to pick an activity to do.

I have thought about this for bedtime routine. My toddler is listening less and less these days and with an infant to tend to my patience is wearing thin.

We've done the jar, and we just weren't good about it. LO really liked stickers. We've fallen off the wagon and really need to get into rewards again.

We did a sticker chart with potty training for DS. At first he thought whenever he got a sticker he would get his reward, but he caught on quick that he needed to fill all the squares. I think a jar would have been harder for him though. With the chart he could see individually how many squares he had left and I think a jar would have been tougher for him to "see" how much left he had to fill. But, that might just be how he learns and is wired.

If you've used a reward chart or jar can you explain it to me?

Does your toddler / preschooler understand it? Where do you keep it?

I'm thinking about doing a reward jar for bedtime. She's been awful about leaving her room lately and I'm at a loss at what to do. I'm thinking of getting a small jar and filling it with marbles (or something similar) for each night she stays in her room. Taking it away if she leaves then when she fills the jar she gets a reward.

I'm not sure she'll understand waiting for the reward though??
