My 5 year old had a lot of questions about how the baby would come out when I was pregnant with his younger sister. I explained that a mommy had to go to the hospital and the doctor decided the safest way to get the baby out of the mommy's tummy (and I explained the two options). He then asked me after the birth which method the doctor chose. :silly: I glossed over the questions of how the baby got in there with an answer that when you want a baby, you start praying that you will get a baby in your tummy and then one day it happens.

My 3 year old already knows that a baby grows inside mommy's tummy and then I push the baby out through my vagina (but she just sees it as pooping haha). She hasn't asked where babies come from yet!

We talk in depth about what a period is and how a baby grows inside She also knows Daddy needed to be there for conception. I’m trying to break it up into small chunks of info when she is ready to digest and emphasize coming to me to talk about this stuff to get the facts straight.

We do our best to answer each question directly and specifically. I tell my daughter her birth story every year on her birthday, and she turned 5 yesterday- this year I added in some detail about pain, cramping, etc. which I hadn't brought up before. But she's known since she was very young (whenever she first asked- maybe 3?) that babies grow in a uterus and then come out of the vagina.

We haven't actually explained intercourse to her yet, because she hasn't asked. We've talked about how babies are made when an egg and a sperm meet. She asked how the sperm gets to the egg once, and her dad just said "they swim." And that was enough info for now, I guess, because she hasn't asked again.

If you can just answer the question they ask, sometimes you give them enough information without having to launch into more than you are comfortable sharing. Take it bit by bit.

She's had more questions about why she can't have babies with her brother, so we've been doing a lot of explaining about DNA.

What Makes a Baby by Cory Silverberg talks about egg/sperm stuff but in a totally inclusive way that is non gendered, which I really appreciated. Its a great book.

I'm expecting more questions about how the sperm actually gets to the egg soon, but we are letting her take the lead by asking us. I think sometime in the next year, even if she doesn't ask, we will probably introduce the concept of intercourse. She's also at the age where I'd like to get more specific about sexual abuse (so far we've just talked about parts of her body that are just for her, mom/dad, and a doctor if we give them permission, and talked about not keeping secrets). If anything I want my husband to be home for it because he's so much better at answering questions without giving too much information.

DS is 5 and has so many questions on how the baby is going to get out. Apparently mommy goes to the hospital and the doctors help get the baby out is not good enough b

Please help me with books / websites / other amazing recs

We’re having #3 this summer and my oldest is 6, so old enough to really have a lot of questions about the process. I don’t want to freak her out but want to be appropriately truthful. So far I am pretty much dancing around it and she isn’t pushing it but I’d like to do better. The questions seem to be coming up more as we get closer and the kids spend a lot of time playing “baby in my tummy” and “let’s go to the hospital to get the baby out”. My 3yo son told my husband at bedtime that one stuffed animal was pooping out his baby :silly: (I’m not really worried about the 3yo understanding - just thought that was funny!)
