We have a museum membership. But, D doesn't really like to sit still through things like plays and concerts. I don't waste my money on it if he's not going to enjoy it.

We do the bulk of our art/music/theatre appreciation-type stuff at home with books/CDs/films and the occasional live performance. I think outings are great fun (honestly, mostly for me), but they are often kind of disjointed and disconnected from a child's perspective. We try to do fewer, targeted trips based on things that LO is reading/learning about instead of going for overall exposure to museums, galleries, plays, orchestras, etc. right now. I tried a more general exposure strategy and it didn't feel quite right, so that's how I decided that we need to be more strategic.

I don't worry too much about exposing my kid to "culture." I took my son to Monster Jam at his request recently. I try to do the things right now that he'll likely grow out of.

@mrbee: yeah I agree with trying not to limit kids based on what the parents interests and strengths are. At the same time I don't really know where to start with a lot of it. For now I think sticking with her toddler classes and activities is ok, but eventually we will probably have to go for something a little different and more sophisticated.

@mrbee: I don't know if NY has anything like it, but the symphony here in Houston has an "instrument petting zoo" that's awesome for kiddos! They can touch and try all the different instruments in the hour before the concert. It might be good for a tactile kid like Olive.

@Beehive: We're going to an outdoor Philharmonic concert this Friday! It's free so if the kids can't sit through it, it's no biggie...

@2littlepumpkins: I'm the same way, I don't get a lot out of the visual arts either! But I feel like it's held me back in my career, and I want to give my kids more exposure to this stuff than I had as a kid... and who knows, maybe they will like it!

So I'll be honest... I don't enjoy these things a ton, so I don't take my kid. I want to eventually at least expose her to some things but it hasn't happened yet and I'm not worried about it at 2.5.

We live in a different culture from our own, so that's one thing, but to my LO's it's just life. We take them to art museums, photo exhibits and when they are older, we'll take them to see shows or concerts. We have a whole slew of international friends, so they get exposure to other cultures and languages. We also try to eat ethnic foods when we get a chance. Most importantly, we travel as much as we can with them.

We love going to art museums with DS. Even at 2.5 there are a lot of fun things to show him - we always point out the animals in paintings, and the babies/children, and the colors. There are a lot of fun things to do with slightly older children that we're looking forward to - I think the NY Philharmonic has children's concerts for ages 3+ or 4+.

We bought a membership to the Art Institute when DD1 was a baby and LOVED it. As an infant, she loved looking at high contrast pieces (black and white photography, modern art). I liked having a non-baby-centric activity that she could also enjoy. The membership meant we could use the members lounge, and I could take a break and nurse her there with a complimentary coffee. Two thumbs up!

Now I like taking them to outdoor symphony concerts or theater performances and getting lawn seats so they can enjoy the show while moving around. We also use the free days at the museums so that if things don't go well, we can leave and just try again next time.

Music and the arts are really important to me and DH, so we'll continue increasing their exposure and involvement as they grow, and I'm excited to share that with them!

DD is only 3 months old, but when she's older I really want to take her to musicals. I grew up loving musicals so much and hope to share that with her.

We don't do this nearly enough! The kids are really into art, and we do lots of activities where they sit down and create art. But we almost never go to the museum to just look at art. I never did it growing up, and it's not something that comes naturally to me.

I'd like to start bringing them to photography exhibits this year, maybe a concert or two. I feel like the world is becoming so visual! So getting that education in visual arts is more important than ever... plus they love music, so maybe they'll get something out of that too. My daughter loves ballet, so I'd love to take her to the Nutcracker this year.

What kind of cultural stuff do you take your kids to? Could use some inspiration!
