@however briefly: That's ridiculous, I'm so sorry :( This is exactly why I believe strongly in vaccinating, even on an alternative or delayed schedule!

@however briefly: Ugh yeah I'm sorry for that turn of events :(. I'm sure it's a little awkward now but hopefully she will understand where you are coming from and that you only have the best interest of your LO in mind. Even though our in-laws they don't agree with us, they have been respectful of our position. When my husband explained that we were going to have to keep my son away from the kids, they cooperated and didn't try to argue about it. It would be pretty unfair of your in-laws to get bent out of shape about you trying to avoid contact with their daughter since their decision could potentially affect the health of your child.

@mrbee: @Mrsbells: I read this on the CDC site...it's not really black and white but it is the sort of thing that made me think what I thought:
"Did you know that your baby gets disease immunity (protection) from you during pregnancy? This immunity will protect your baby from some diseases during the first few months of life but immunity decreases over time."

@olive: actually that is my exact situation now.

She's just emailed me back and apparently I misunderstood because her baby has had absolutely no vaccinations and they are not planning on vaccinating her at all (and they are both very passionate about it). I've just spent two hours trying to word an email back to her bringing up my concern primarily about DTaP but everything is coming out very accusing even though I don't mean for it to. I think I'm going to leave it for now and talk to a doctor and probably just end up doing exactly what you did and just try to go to a different room or something when they are around. I know this is going to cause a fight at some point and they are going to use the argument of, "Well, our child made it through just fine, blah blah, blah" and I probably won't deal with it all very well but I can't see any other solution.

The only good thing that she corrected me on was that her sister watches her baby for her instead of daycare but there are like six kids in that family and they all have heaps of friends running in and out of the house all the time. I'm not sure if that sort of almost secondary exposure is as worrisome.

We had to deal with this situation a few months ago. My son was baptized at 6 weeks and my BIL is the godfather. He lives out of town so he was coming up with my SIL and their 3 kids- all of whom are not vaccinated at all (ages 5, 3 and 1). I was REALLY freaked out about having the kids around my son. I wanted my husband to tell them the kids couldn't come but that was sort of impossible with him being the godfather. It lead to a huge fight with my husband and in the end, I had to compromise for the sake of family peace. They did come but we kept my son as far away as physically possible from them. It was an extremely stressful weekend for me- thankfully my son was going through a sleepy period and spent most of the weekend napping.

It's really an uncomfortable situation when it's family and I think you definitely have to tread lightly. People get extremely defensive when it comes to the decisions they make with their children. I feel that when you make a decision to not vaccinate, one of the consequences that you have to be prepared for is that people are going to not want your kids to be around their kids until they have had their shots but not everyone sees it that way.

We didn't have any small children around DD when she was just born, especially if they're in daycare. They are constantly exposed to germs & some vaccines given shed bc they are live virus vaccines so they're also exposed to that.

I agree that letting your pedi be the bad guy is the way to go.

@mrbee: That's actually a really good suggestion that I'm feeling silly for forgetting about.

I've just written my sister-in-law and as a first step I've asked her to detail exactly what vaccinations they are planning on getting and when. After that, I'll figure out exactly how much I'm going to have to ask of them and go from there. I'm definitely not as stressed out about this as I was a couple of hours ago though.

No way; and don’t feel badly about your feelings! If people want to gamble with their own child’s health, I guess that’s their prerogative, but considering there are whopping cough outbreaks in almost every single state and whopping cough kills babies and young children – they are not going to be allowed to gamble with my child’s health too.

I would request that she get a DTaP, since pertussis kills babies. The other things you are likely to be more protected by herd immunity, but there's a pertussis epidemic right now across the country.

I know that's contrary to what I usually preach about vaccines, but she's family and the likelihood of polio and some of the other vaccine preventable diseases is pretty low. Ideally I'd like her to have pneumococcal and HiB too if they are willing to do some vaccines for you.

Thank you everyone for both validating my feelings as well as the support and advice. We're still FAR from this actually happening so I think I will slowly broach the subject with my sister-in-law. As we're the ones who have married into the family, I think we have a bit better understanding with each other. Maybe she can use this as a way to convince her husband that choosing to do more vaccinations or moving them up is something that should be done.

I agree with @jessiejo17 in that since I will be staying in someone else's home I just would not feel comfortable saying their other grandchild cannot visit the house while we're there or even to hide out upstairs when they bring the child over. The last thing I want to do is alienate myself and child from the family.

Thanks again for backing me up. I was starting to feel way too "paranoid first time mom" there for a bit and second guessing myself.

I would either stay somewhere else or leave with the baby when the kid comes over *shrug* It's not worth keeping the peace, to risk having your newborn catch something awful.

I agree that it's important to protect your child from illness, however I do feel beacuse it is not your house that you don't have the right to tell the grandparents their other grandchild isn't allowed to come over when your child is there. Your in laws are allowing you to stay with them and I don't think that allows you to dictate who can visit their home.

If this is going to be a problem, since they only live 5 minutes away and I'm sure drop in all te etime, maybe another arrangement needs to be made to ensure a healthy baby?

@mrsbells: She will be around 15 months when our baby will be born. She is still young now and has only gotten one vaccination. My BIL is against getting more but my SIL is wanting to do a delayed schedule. Not sure what will end up happening but I have a feeling "delayed" in their minds is much older than 15 months. She is exposed to short term daycare (only a couple of hours a couple of times a week) but it's daycare nonetheless.
