Yesterday the county published the modified quarantine guidelines on their website and today the district published the information on their website which has trickled to Facebook.

I'm glad word is getting out to the parents since this runs counter to what we had been told previously. It was really bothering me that I was supposed to be sending my kids to school when the other parents were under the impression the kids with exposure would be kept at home. I felt like I was breaking a social contract.

Thanks everyone for the input. It helps to know what's going on in other locations when I feel so crazy.

We just had to quarantine for 10 days after DS was exposed via a classroom next door to his (the classes share aftercare time together and play together regularly). This was before the regular school year started and the guidelines were updated. DS spiked a high fever after 7 days so we got him tested, but it was HFM. Because of the quarantine, we were able to keep it from spreading to the rest of the class (though that's where he got it originally!).

We just heard from a family member that her unvaccinated coworker just died from covid. He was 38. Rather scary... Where we are, there is quite a bit of spread at our local schools (no mask mandates for anyone, no social distancing, back to full precovid life). 11 children in our area have developed Kawasaki's disease from it. I guess I'm just venting and this isn't very helpful. It's just still rather scary here.

@catgirl: It's on-campus aftercare. Information has been very sparse this year but from what I can gather from the kids they're back to normal having Kinder-5th all playing together. They use one portable classroom for homework/quiet play and spend most of their time outside.

That sounds like our quarantine policy last year... Kids only had to quarantine if they were exposed w/o masks. My son's teacher actually had Covid (asymptomatic, only tested because she was going on her honeymoon) but no one else got it or had to quarantine.

My step daughter got Covid last April (after her first vaccine!!) and DS had to quarantine for I think 8 days after exposure? We were able to test after 5 days and were negative so then he could go back.

This year they way loosened everything and kids only have to quarantine if they are exposed AND show symptoms. And as of now masks are not mandatory except for on the bus so this could be a sh*t show. But there was little to no spread among the kids in elementary so hoping for the best.

@catgirl: This is in line with what our school is doing. If there's a positive case, they aren't quarantining the whole class, but will quarantine the kids who regularly sit close to the positive case. There was 1 class with a couple of positive cases and a couple of other symptomatic kids, and they did quarantine that entire class.

Is your after care at the school or a separate facility? I know the CDC has updated close contact/quarantine needs in K-12 indoor classroom settings. If kids are wearing masks correctly and consistently, while staying three feet apart, they are no longer required to quarantine from school when there is a positive case in the classroom (as long as they are asymptomatic). They may be asked to quarantine from other activities, though.

I'm not sure how that fits in with an after care program though?

Our district is still trying to figure out how that will work in our schools. Masks are required but it's hard to guarantee every kid is wearing them perfectly. It's also hard to guarantee that the distance is always being maintained. Either way, I agree that the policies should have been clearly explained at the start of the year.

@Corduroy: I agree that especially given how much things have changed, it would have been helpful for the school to more clearly spell out the policies. I think your plan sounds good—by five days after, they would most likely test positive if they did get it. So that can give you some personal peace of mind. I feel the same way, I’ve been very nervous about possibly giving it to others if we were to get Covid.

@MrsSCB: Apparently this protocol is in line with the new rules from the county health department. The modified quarantine would also be in place if the exposure happened in the classroom. A parent from another school got a modified quarantine letter that required the classroom to close for 5 days and all the students to test. I now know ours requires testing 2x a week for 14 days. No explanation was given for the difference in the quarantine modification but I hope that means my kids' exposure was not soo bad.

I really wish the school had explained this protocol before the school year started. There are a lot of shocked and upset parents now - both parents of the exposed and parents of unexposed.

I'm feeling pretty at peace with the idea of keeping the kids home the rest of the week (2 days), getting them tested Friday (which would be the 5th day since exposure), and sending them back on Monday. DH still wants to send them tomorrow so I know it will be a game time decision. I look forward to when I have more trust & understanding in the protocol and this doesn't feel so heavy. I'm so scared of passing this virus on to other people.

@Mama Bird: Thanks, that's helpful to hear.

That sounds so frustrating... for what it's worth, it sounds sensible to not consider them close contacts. It's really not common for elementary schoolers to get covid in school. I can't speak for older grades, our middle and high schools were mostly closed. My kids had several covid cases in their class last year, and no one caught it in class. Not even the kids that sat next to them.

Not sure what the ban on extracurriculars is about though. Maybe the thinking is, school is too important to keep kids home if it's likely they're fine, but this is kind of optional so better to err on the safe side... just guessing.

I feel like the vast majority of policies are incoherent in one way or another, and it has gotten even worse lately. Half of people are completely over it and half want super strict policies that are themselves really costly, and the middle ground they strike to try to make everyone just happy enough makes no sense. If it's not safe to go to extracurriculars (many of which I assume take place outside), then it's not safe to sit in a crowded classroom with kids all day. If the latter is fine, then why impose restrictions on extracurriculars?

Sorry, I'm just ranting... I don't have great advice on what to do, just wanted to say I will completely scream into a pillow with you...

Yeah, that surprises me! Both at my work and at our kids’ preschool, masks are required and don’t have any bearing on whether someone is a “close contact.” Any time a child or teacher has tested positive, the entire class has been quarantined, per the rules of our local health department. My son’s class was even sent home for a week and required to test after just being on the playground with a child from another class who tested positive. I would have expected the same for after school care.

We made it 7 days into the new school year and today afterschool care called and let me know there was a positive so they have to close for two weeks.

I'm not too surprised by that but I am surprised the kids are still expected to go to school in person. Since they wear masks whatever contact they had with the positive individual is not considered 'close contact' so they only have to do a 'modified quarantine' which apparently just means no extracurricular activities. If we choose to keep them home to protect the other students/staff they would get unexcused absences.

Last year when I thought everything was a little on the overprotective side and there was so much safety for show I followed all the procedures and did as I was told. That was my plan for this year too but my gut is telling me that I should say screw the procedures and keep the kids home. The thought of another year of weighing risks like this makes me want to scream into a pillow.
