I would also add that there's a very good chance that your mom has already had the EB virus and would therefore would not be at risk of getting it from your sister unless she was part of a very tiny percentage of people who have mono more than once. Most people get it as a child but have little to no symptoms. It's harder on teenagers and adults, as are most illnesses really. I didn't get it from anything I shared saliva with, and no one I know has gotten it from me.</p> <p>And the incubation period for EBV is 4-6 weeks. So your sister came into contact with EBV 4-6 weeks ago and if any of you have seen her in that time frame, you would have already been exposed. I'm not a doctor, but I did just have (still have?) mono. Anyway, this is not a concern at all for kids, as per my multiple doctors and my kids' pediatrician. Even if they are exposed directly and get it, for them it tends to be either no reaction at all, or a mild reaction like a 1 day fever. It's mainly teens that are affected most, and then some adults, too.</p> <p>I was totally freaked about my kids being exposed, and every single person has told me it's not a big deal. They told me it's not necessary to miss work or not socialize---it's just that mono makes some people tired, so they end up missing work/school from exhaustion, not because of the mono.</p> <p>Supposedly, most people have been exposed to Epstein Barr virus, and most people don't have a reaction at all to it--just a few of us lucky ones (and my doctors think it's because I also have an autoimmune disease that I've been feeling so low--it's not really just the mono, it's the combination of the two).</p> <p>Anyway, I'm a teacher and I never missed work and everyone said that was fine.
