At about 18 months I did a few things. First, I stopped nursing in public. I just told her 'sorry, I left it at home', and she quickly stopped asking. Then I started offering a hug and a kiss when she hurt herself, and she quickly dropped nursing in those situations. Then I started telling her no when she was clearly just hungry, or when dinner was near, or when we'd recently nursed. That got it down way more.

At some point (25 months or so) we really dropped down, and it has started to become uncomfortable. At 27 months, we just do two minutes at bedtime, and two minutes in the morning, and I'm close to done. I've just been consistent in slowly dropping the frequency and amount, and she's been fairly receptive.

I meant to add, I SAH and LO hasn't had a bottle in months. So, I couldn't just switch to a different milk because he doesn't drink that much from a straw cup if offered ;)

I just started giving bottles of whole milk for the two afternoon feedings. It was pretty easy as I WOH, so LO's nanny started giving him bottles of whole milk rather than breastmilk, and I just stuck with it on weekends. My supply regulated quickly, and I make just the right amount for his morning and evening feed now at 14 months.

@birdofafeather: we are at 13m and were on morning bedtime and 2x a day for a long time. Once he hit 12m I just stopped offering the mid afternoon time nd gave him a snack. It was a total non issue. I am planning on doing the same with the mid morning one once we are home after the holidays. I've been offering milk with meals but he's not all that interested; ill keep offering it though!

Personally, I do entirely child-led weaning. Ellie didn't drop to just morning/evening until she started preschool, and even then she sometimes nursed during the day until she was about 4 or so. Lorelei still nurses some during the day, although if we are out and about and she is busy she typically nurses less. You can certainly encourage ramping down your sessions, and other bees probably have some great ideas for how to do that. :)

Lo is 19 months and still 1 morning nurse and 1 evening nurse.
We did the don't offer, don't refuse to start and that reduced feedings to 4 a day. At that point she was interested in using cups so we started to offer drinks in straw cups and when she requested to nurse I would offer a straw cup of water or milk. We only had 1 or two episodes of crying with this method.
I was worried about supply but my body just adjusted. I still pump once a week because I am out of town for work, so I know that I supply about 1 1/2 ounces for her night time nurse and 2-4 ounces for her morning nurse.
Good luck!

How did you transition to just feeding morning and night? DD is 11.5 months (OMG) and i'm happy to continue on BFing, but I'd like to transition to just morning and night probably in the next 3-6 months. I'm letting her lead the way, but as of now, we nurse morning, after her two naps, bedtime and one MOTN session. obviously, i would love to cut out the MOTN session first, but that's neither here nor there for the point of this thread. ;)

SO, how did you make the switch to only feeding morning and bedtime? did you actively replace day sessions with cups of milk or did LO just stop being interested in nursing during the day? how long was the transition and how long did the morning and bedtime only sessions last (meaning, did your supply disappear or did LO not care as much when it was only twice a day)?
