@MoonMoon: We moved him into his crib to start the night once he got too mobile for the Arms Reach. Before that we'd lay him in the sidecar section and go about our night. He nearly always sleeps in between us (I won't lie, he did roll off the bed once) & scoots up to the headboard like @yoursilverlining: describes. I'm not worried at all about the covers - he's great at moving himself around. We're looking into a bed railing so he doesn't always have to sleep in the middle (I.e. only needs to kick me & not my husband).

Yeah, I'd put that mattress on the floor stat. You'll save yourself a ton of heart ache worrying about the baby falling off.

Thanks all! I just want to make sure as he becomes older that I don't become cavalier about safety. Your answers encourage me that we can keep going!

We had a side car arrangement with a twin next to our queen until LO was 8 months. We are now part-time co-bedding; he comes to our bed after first night-waking. The issue we had was that he started crawling in his sleep and was able to crawl even in a sleep sack! After he got dangerously close to the edge of the bed I decided he would have to spend the first part of the night in his crib. Thankfully the transition was easy and now I can actually get some sleep and not be worried about him crawling off the bed. FWIW I think this LO is just super gutsy so this is probably not the norm. We never had this issue with his older brother.

We still co-bed with our 17 month old LO and have done so since she was a few weeks old. When she was little when used an in-the-bed secure co-sleeper but once she outgrew that, she has been in the bed. She sleeps between us, and likes to hug the headboard, which works out nicely since that means she is rarely covered in blankets (she sleeps in fleece most of the year). She also likes to share my pillow sometimes, so we’ll sleep snuggled like that.

She also has a floorbed in our room, and we start her out on her floorbed at night. Sometimes we will leave her in there all night, but she will almost always wake up and need to come into our bed if we do that, whereas she sleeps right through the night soundly if she is in our bed.

She is an energetic sleeper….it’s just something you get used to. Getting kicked in the head/throat all night, that is. :)

Our son is almost 18 months. We've been co-bedding since he was 3 days old. Once he started rolling, I actually got better rest. He was more independent and able to move himself around and out of danger. Even with covers. At about 6 months he would kick them off if he didn't want them on.

We have recently started to transition him. We took his crib, removed the from rail, and put it against the wall. then pushed our bed up against it. Our sons crib is a convertible so we were able to lower it to the same level as our bed

@Kemma: thanks for describing your experience! I think using foam wedges to fill in the gap might be better for us- I don't think we can move the mattress to the floor at this point.

I have heard of people using either pool noodles or foam pipe covers to bridge any gaps in a sidecar situation. The other option is to just put your mattress on the floor and then put a crib mattress right next to it.

We part time bed share and Miss A sleeps in her cot until she wakes for a night feeding and then we both sleep in the king single bed in her room (she sleeps closest to the wall).

@JoyfulKiwi: thank you for your response! It's good to know we can keep going for a while. Did your baby always also sleep in their crib or did you transition at some point to using both?

I guess I should do more serious research into the Arm's Reach-glad to know they can be compatible with platform beds.

We're still co-bedding for most of the night with our 13 month old. I don't know all the answers, but here's our experience:

-once we was able to roll, I stopped worrying as much about his face being blocked. We do sleep with the covers away from his face and he was able to move his head from side to side & do a decent baby "push up".

-our guy rolls quite a bit & likes to go horizontal, but we just kinda deal with it & scoot to the edges of the bed to give him more space.

-our mattress isn't flush with our bed frame either and our Arms Reach fit well (there was a small gap that I stuffed with blankets), but once he could push himself up to sitting it didn't seem very safe.

-our son spends the first part of the night in his own room in his crib and does fine at naps as well, so I don't think it'll be terribly hard to adjust to sleeping in a sidecar if you choose that

I know another bee has a good side-car setup, but I can't remember her user name right now.

We never assumed we would share a bed with our baby, but within a couple of weeks we started and have never looked back. Both my husband and I just feel better being close to him, and it's helped breastfeeding too. We don't have a crib at this point, but our baby is 5 months old and some questions are popping up now:

-he doesn't roll onto his tummy yet, but what do we do when he does? Right now he rolls to his side, and I just constantly make sure his nose is clear.

-he's a very energetic sleeper, he whips back and forth and scoots-should he have his own sleep surface?

-our bed is a platform bed-the frame juts out a few inches from the edge of the mattress. Is there a sidecar style of crib out there that adjusts to platforms?

-how will we teach him to sleep farther away if we do decide on a sidecar? He's pretty used to nursing to sleep, and seems comforted by touch. On vacations, when we've put him in a pack & play, he hasn't stayed sleep for too long.

-anything else I should be thinking of as our baby gets bigger and older?

Thank you!
