@Matcha Latte: Ahhh! So happy to hear from someone who has done it! And during your first pregnancy (as this would be my first as well).

Before you left, did your OB have any thoughts/advice for you that you found helpful?

Went to Japan to visit my in laws for 5 weeks from week 18 of my first pregnancy. I didn't bother with insurance as health care over there is not outrageously expensive like the US. But the medical systems my be different depending on where you go so maybe look into it?

I had a OB appointment before I left and once again as soon as I came back. I did end up going for an exam while in Japan after I took a hard fall on some ice, but luckily everything was alright!

I was pretty miserable on the long plane ride there but I still was able to enjoy myself and think it was worth it to go! As long as you're having a regular pregnancy I don't see why you shouldn't go!

I would only do it if you could wait until the last minute to plan the trip, not if you needed to plan everything while TTC and just hope that the timing and everything else worked out. You just can't know how long TTC will take, if you will experience loss, or if you will have morning sickness and how long it will last or how bad it will be.

@Mrs. Blush: I didn't look into it, but it probably depends on the health system of the country/ies you're visiting. I have a friend from my phd program who was abroad during her pregnancy-- she had appointments in Japan, 2 us cities, and gave birth in Brazil and she said she had the hardest time finding care in the us! For me, I already knew I loved my ob and it didn't seem worth the hassle to find a dr abroad for just an appointment or two, plus I had other dissertation work I could do at home instead

@kaykay: YES totally! Right now we're going through so many different permutations of The Timeline for baby. But there's too many variables to plan properly so we're just going to have to pick something and move on! :silly:

@nana87: Did you look into what it would take to have OB visits abroad? I have been googling up a storm, but surprisingly can't find much info on if you can have those appointments away from home.

I thought about doing this during my first pregnancy as I was in the middle of conducting dissertation research abroad, BUT my ob told me I would have to have appointments abroad if I wanted to leave for too long-- she schedules appointments at least every 4 weeks until 28 weeks (more frequently after) and I had lots of other appointments in between for various tests and ultrasounds. This was a totally normal, low risk pregnancy too. So, I ended up only traveling for about 3 weeks at a time

As long as you were low-risk, I would, and I would just schedule your OB visits for right before you go and then right when you get back. Just for information's sake, I'd also look into what sort of international coverage your health insurance has, too, and consider buying coverage if you don't have any and/or are the type of person who likes to have all of those sorts of scenarios covered.

Especially since you're just TTC now, I'd just plan what makes sense and what you're comfortable with. As everyone on these boards is aware, BFP doesn't always happen right away or when you expect (although sometimes it does!), and baby doesn't always come exactly to target either. But I think you need to just live your life making the choices you can, without planning for all eventualities!

I've done overseas trips (only 2-3 weeks) with both pregnancies. it wasn't super ideal in the first tri because I felt crappy and I couldn't enjoy EVERYTHING to the fullest, but it really wasn't that bad! I'd chat with your OB to see what they would think about you potentially doing it while pregnant and what they would think about missed appointments.

@Mrs. Blush: You could also look at taking an at home blood pressure cuff with you. Or finding a generic walk in clinic type thing that you could just go get a check up.

@Mrs. Blush: I did not. I don't see any reason to unless you have some kind of emergency. You would also have to consider travel insurance or think about paying out of pocket.

It wasn't the 6-8 weeks you're thinking of, but I was in Europe at 7 months pregnant for a few weeks. It was totally fine. I was also in countries with very high levels of prenatal care in the event something had happened. Looking back on it, however, I might have been screwed without health insurance coverage there so I really should have purchased a travel plan. That might be my only recommendation. But otherwise, I'd say go for it. I also went skiing at 7 months pregnant so take my advice however you want ;)

Depends on the pregnancy. I had a terrible first 20-22 weeks, I was so sick and miserable. I wouldn't have wanted to waste Europe on that. Also missing out on the amazing food and drink would be tough.

We went to Europe for two weeks during this pregnancy (I was 12-14) weeks and it was completely fine. I think I would've been fine on a longer trip too. I've had a really easy pregnancy - no morning sickness or other complications, so it was just like any other trip. One thing we did do was upgrade our seats on the plane so we had more legroom (so worth it) and I made sure to walk around a lot. We're on the west coast though, so flights to Europe are 10-12 hours.

I don't think you're crazy at all, but agree that it's a good idea to plan the trip around the pregnancy--that way you could pass the scary stuff in the first tri and get your OB's blessing. also think a trip of fewer than 6 weeks (like 4-5) is nothing to sniff at, and after the 20-wk anatomy scan you go 4 weeks without an appointment, anyway.

Given a low-risk pregnancy, I think you'd be fine travelling internationally at any point between 13 and 26 weeks or so - I think it was as I was approaching 30 weeks that I started to slow down a bit.

Hello bees!

My husband and are thinking about an extended trip to Europe. My parents recently moved abroad, and we could stay with them half of the time, and travel half of the time.

However, we don't want to put off TTC any longer. Have you ever traveled outside the country for 6-8 weeks (or more) when pregnant? Is this a crazy idea?

We're aware that I may not be feeling my best, and that of course if there are any complications/risk the trip would be off. We'd try to time the trip to take place during the 2nd trimester.
