I don't have any advice but I have the same problem- my in laws are constantly complaining about how uncomfortable my son is in his seat. I'm definitely not going to make any decisions based on their advice and opinions but it's hard to express that politely and they don't listen to me anyway!

@travelgirl1: Unless you are asking the grandparents to buy you new seats, I don't understand how you are causing any one any trouble...?

The law was one here in Nova Scotia when our daughter was rear facing. We kept her rear facing until she was 18 months old, and through our move to Saskatchewan. After we arrived we took the seat out, gave it a good cleaning and put it back in forward facing. After that the recommendation was changed to two years old, but by then she was almost 3, so we never turned her back.

Here's some safety information from Transport Canada. Long Story short, follow the recommdations of your chair manufacurer. If they say your child is still within the recommndations for rear facing, then that's what you should do. https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/motorvehiclesafety/safedrivers-childsafety-car-index-873.htm

@travelgirl1: I tend to shut the conversation down by telling my family that research shows that it's 500 times safer to rear-face until at least two and that my decision was final. I also didn't let anyone else drive her. My husband and I will be installing her seat(s) in grandparent's cars for them as well.

@Foodnerd81: DH apparently had a conversation with MIL yesterday where she got all sniffy because her daughter "has done plenty of research on it and ff is fine" and all her other grandkids forward faced earlier. We are seen as causing trouble. Oh well!

My family is all in the U.S., mostly NJ, so I just don't open it up for discussion. I say it's much safer and she doesn't have a problem with it, so we will continue until we can't. But NJ just changed the law to require RF until 2 so that helps my argument anyway.

If you have faced resistance from family when rear facing your kiddos, did you have any hard hitting facts or video links to show them? If so could you share them with me?

Family are already giving us grief about why we won't use their seats when we move (not safe for extended rear facing) because typically kids are turned around at nine months in the UK.

Part of me is all about saying "our kids, our business" but the other part of me would like to coherently and calmly tell them why it is safer.
