I don't think it's extreme* but DH (who sounds like your DH) wants to take LO skiing THIS winter).

*Born and raised in the Deep South, have been skiing once in my life and was pretty much paralysed with fear. Any type of skiing is "extreme" to me!

I worry so I'll share my worry but once she gets to a certain age I guess there's only so much I can actually do. Hopefully we get some credit in her book for having some life experience. Avalanches happen and I know 2 backwoods skiers that lost their lives from one, she'll be sure to hear those stories if she wants to do any extreme skiing - I guess it's just knowing when it's appropriate to share those stories and when to let her be adventurous and also preparing her with a good attitude so she'll take the right amount of caution while still exploring her crazy asshole side.

@sunny: Some idiots will try jumping out of the helicopter (only pros), but most helicopter pilots worth their salt would never allow it. Definitely NOT a part of heli-skiing!

@shopaholic: @Mrs. Jacks: I totally thought heli skiing involved jumping out of a helicopter and landing on your skis! Is that only in video games?!

My DH does a lot of backcountry skiing and multiple-day mountaineering trips. I know he will want yo take S when he is old enough to go, and I won't be the one to stand in their way. I know and trust that DH will take the proper precautions.

@shopaholic: I think you and I have a different definition of heli-skiing. Typically, when we go heli-skiing, you take a helicopter to a remote place in Alaska or Canada, climb out of the helicopter, don your skis, avi gear etc and ski completely untracked powder snow usually on fairly challenging slopes.

Of course, riding in helicopters in remote areas isn't the safest thing in the world and there is always avalanche danger... But what you don't see in the movies is that the guides (and experienced customers) have a lot of avi training and check the snow very carefully to mitigate danger. So really, aside from the helicopter ride, it's the same risks as what I do riding the back country. :)

Hope that helps mitigate your fears of heli-skiing!

I guess I should have clarified. I DON'T think all surfing, skating, skiing, etc. is "Extreme". I would be fine with our LO(s) learning and enjoying each sport. It's just I don't want them to be striving for the extremist ends of these activities. Ski, fine. Double diamond, if you're well-trained and experienced, fine. Jumping off that cliff you can't see over the edge and free-falling forever it seems? Please, no. It would give me a heart attack.

@Mrs. Jacks: True, true. But I just couldn't stomach the thought of my baby-daddy jumping out of an aircraft to try and land on his skis. :/

No, I'm actively encouraging my daughter to push herself to her limits. My parents raised me to be totally inactive, and it has been a very hard thing to dig out of as an adult. I want her to feel really strong and powerful.

I think I'll be ok with her doing just about anything, provided she is safe about it. DH was a skateboarder so I expect he will teach LO. I want her to feel like she can do anything without me holding her back, but you bet your booty she'll be wearing protective gear!

It was only after I became a mom that I understood how painful it was for my mom when my brother broke his arm snowboarding (at age 27!). She was really devasted for him because it was a really bad fracture to the upper arm that would never correctly heal.

That being said I know we will be teaching LO to ski since we live so close to the mountains and DH has already declared that when she can walk she will start taking lessons. I think we will have to educate her on not taking stupid risks to endanger herself. I think I'll also encourage her to pursue other hobbies that aren't so dangerous like playing an instrument, tennis, etc.

@shopaholic: ha- Dh went heli-skiing on our "last big vacation before baby" when I was about 18 weeks pregnant. I went to the safety course with him before they left and did get a little freaked out but knew he would be smart.

I assume LO will do sports with her dad- I want her to since I'm not really sporty at all and wish I was. I'd be very nervous if she takes t to the extreme but we would make sure she was taking the right safety measures.

I also don't consider heli-skiing extreme. I think you have to have years of practice and proficiency at something before you take it to what some might consider extreme levels. And what you might consider extreme snowboarding might be something I would do on a recreational Saturday (hiking in the backcountry to untracked powder).

Our kids won't be ready for those types of activities for a long time and I think we'll probably gain comfort as they gain proficiency. Having said that, I happily acknowledge that my preference would be to wrap my girls in bubble wrap forever... But what kind of a life is that? I pushed my limits and I assume they will too at some point.

I don't consider either surfing or skateboarding "extreme".

My honest answer is that I would probably try to discourage her but I would let her if she really wanted to.... But I"d be a hot, worried mess the whole time.

G skateboards & would like to get into bmx. Both DH & I support it given he wears the proper protective gear. For something like surfing he'd have to really prove he was a strong enough & smart enough swimmer (sure if we loved closer to the ocean that would be more relevant).... As for skiing/snowboarding.... I guess if he really wanted to we'd just require the same as for bmx/x games sports.

Just finished watching the movie, "Mavericks." DH likes extreme sports and activities, and would totally encourage our LOs to pursue them. Crazy guy wanted to go Heli-Skiing before LO arrived and I was not okay with that. I have always told him I don't want our LOs to do anything "extreme." Now that we have K, even more so. He said he'd want K to surf, skate, ski double-black diamonds, etc. Meanwhile, I have nightmares regularly about something happening to my baby. Is it just a maternal thing? I think he doesn't understand, no matter how much he thinks he does, how absolutely petrified I am of something terrible happening to our LO(s).

Where do you and your SO stand on this? Would you encourage, stop, or let your LO do whatever "extreme" activity they wanted?
