@periwinklebee: Those are so gross! We had those years ago in our old place, and it took SO long to get rid of them. Now everything like pasta, flour, and sugar goes straight into the freezer for a few days.

I never knew they could end up in trail mix too.
Yuck!

@Hypatia: @LCTBQE: I once was away for a ten day business trip. When I came home, my husband remarked that a lot of funny looking bugs must have been coming in from outside when he opened the windows. Turns out instead pantry moths had been in a bag of trail mix, eaten through the plastic, and spawned everywhere. We were trapping them for months. So, so gross. Now everything that won't be eaten within a few days goes in the fridge :meh:

@Hypatia: this is such good information! gross to think about, but it's real life I suppose--good to know. the only grain I've ever had go larvae-y on me is (are?) grits, we go through the rest of it too fast.

@LCTBQE: We actually freeze all our dry goods for 24 hours too. Expiration dates on dry goods are mostly due to the fact that manufacturers can't keep bugs out of the grain, so larvae will hatch after a certain period. Freezing oatmeal, cereal, etc. gives them a much longer shelf life.

The only real solution is to put them in plastic storage bags. But you'll have to kill the moth eggs or they'll just hatch inside the bags. So put the clothes inside the bags and then put them in the freezer for 24 hours. That will kill any eggs or larvae and then they'll be safe until you take them out of the bags.

How do you store sweaters and wool coats so moths don't eat them? We never had moths at my old apartment, but our new (new to us, 1923) house seems to have them--just found huge holes in my favorite cashmere sweater :meh: I've heard cedar is pretty ineffective but no experience. Thanks!
