My daughter was born with low sleep needs - every one described her as 'so alert' even in the nicu. She never slept for more than 45 minutes as a newborn, and only two or three times a day, max. She was never one of those babies who just slept all the time. Now she's three, doesn't nap much, and sleeps at most 11 hours over night.

Some kids just need less sleep. My daughter is just like her father, and it serves him well. He needs hours less sleep than I do, so he just gets way more time in the evening to himself than me. It's awesome, I wish I were like that.

@Freckles: he sleeps well in the car. That's it. Stroller or ergo are only 30-40 min. He's awake 2ish hours sometimes more sometimes less.

LO2 will get about 11 hours at night and I aim for 2.5 hours in naps. Unfortunately that means I ergo him for all of his naps. Does he nap well in the stroller, or some other method? How often are you putting him down for naps? I find that if he only gets a 40-50 min nap, he will want to sleep again within 1.5 hours.

DS was never a great sleeper since birth. He's currently 2 and sleeps about <10 hours a night (sometimes with numerous awakenings for no rhyme or reason - oof). But he functions great during the day. Great attitude and playful. It's hard on me and DH since nighttime sleep is what we need to re-energize, but my DS misses that memo sometimes.

My LO had low sleep needs. He only took 20 minute cat naps for most of his life and then all of the sudden at a year, it got so much better. He would take longer naps and slept through the night (11-12 hours). Just wanted to give you hope that it could change. Now we are on one nap (1.5-2 hours sometimes 3!) and about 11-12 hours of night sleep.

R only took cat naps but it was 9 months when we moved her to two naps and she did much better. We usually got two hour naps a day.

This was (and is!) my LO, who is now 2 years old. She *never* slept 12 hours overnight, not even as a newborn. I specifically remember a day when she was maybe 5-6 weeks old where she would not nap ALL DAY. I tried everything! Every kind of white noise, darkened rooms, rocking, bouncing, singing, wearing her, walking her in the stroller. She would not sleep. And that was when she was "supposed" to be sleeping something like 18 hours a day. (yeah right).

She's never slept more than 9-10 hours overnight and for more than a year (from about 11 months-23 months or so), she only slept from 7 pm-5 am and sometimes it was more like 4:45 am. And she was still waking overnight, more than once.

At this point, I've just accepted it. She's older now, so just on one nap, but she still only sleeps 11-12 hours in a 24 hours period on her best days, sometimes it's less. Now that I'm off work for a while with summer + maternity leave, I've shifted her schedule so she doesn't sleep till 9 pm, but then will sleep till 7 usually (or just shy of 7) so I get a bit more sleep. And then her nap is anywhere from 1-2 hours.

Some kids just need less. My pediatrician said she wouldn't worry unless it's less than 11 hours total/24 hour period.

H also did not consolidate naps until about nine months. This is when she dropped to two naps and then at 12 months she dropped to one nap. She didn't sleep through the night until she was 12 months old.

Just want to say that DS1 didn't consolidate his naps until around 8-9 months. Before that they were 30 minute catnaps which eventually stretched to 40 minutes. By 9 months, I think he took two at least one hour naps. He's got low sleep needs too. Also, at that age, 10 hours was his max overnight sleep. I'm sure we had nights with less. That didn't change until recently and he's almost 3. If he skips nap, he'll do around 11 hours.

I learned right away with DD not to read any general guidelines! DD hardly slept at all. I am still lucky if she sleeps 8 hours and will take a nap anywhere from 0 minutes 20. Hear me cry. I still don't like it when people say newborns "sleep so much," because that hasn't been my experience. For her to sleep she had to be in a carrier or my boob had to be in her mouth (nightmare)!

This happened to me. D was a dream baby with sleep. He slept long hours and could self soothe and put himself to bed.

Not M. At almost 16 months, he still has to nurse to fall asleep. He doesn't nap well and still wakes in the night. At this point, I'm just looking forward to when I can maybe reason with him lol.

@lamariniere: sigh. thanks! And you give me hope LOL! Hmmmm 8 months is around the corner maybe we'll get better naps then! He sleeps well in the car but that's about it! I tried CIO for naps when he woke up early but he cried a LOT and it just was too stressful for me. He's slept through the night one time but typically is up 1x a night. He will occasionally take a 1-1.5 hour nap in his crib but that's extremely rare. My older son didn't take a long nap on one nap either (1.5 hours) and also stopped napping a few months before 3....and only sleeps 10/11 hours at night. He's much better with a nap (even a car nap) but I just can't make him sleep.

Sorry I can't be of much help, but I can commiserate!

My son was like this until about 8 months when he finally started having longer naps. He didn't STTN until after 1 year, and then all of his sleep came together and he became a sleeper!

My DD is also low sleep needs. She was a pretty good sleeper until 3 months and then it all went downhill. Before 1 year, her longest nap was maybe 1.5 hours if I were really lucky. Usually she would wake up within an hour though. She didn't STTN until about 15 months and would only sleep 10 hours. Now at 19 months she still takes 1 pretty short nap and sleeps about 10 hours at night. She does seem tired and is definitely in a better mood when she sleeps more, but I don't really know what to do about it.

Anyone have or had one? My first son was lowish on the spectrum of sleep needs, but always slept at least 10 hours at night and took 2.5 hours worth of naps. My second son is breaking me. He doesn't even sleep 10 hours at night and at 7 months his naps are still awful. He seems to sleep 9.5 total hours most nights (usually 7:30-5:30 with two wakings!) Earlier or later bed times hasn't seemed to generate more sleep. When he wakes in the 5 am hour I nurse him and he falls back asleep but wakes up 10 mins later and no amount of paci replacement or rocking will get him back down.

I feel like he's chronically tired, but I can't get him to sleep more. I can't get him on 2 naps because he sleeps so very little at night. I am also confused having done this before I thought all babies slept at LEAST 10 hours?
