@Corduroy: Thanks! :) I'm not sure if I'll save the milk I pump while I'm gone since I'll be away from a fridge for about 12 hours one of the days, but I may bring my pump just in case I decide to keep some!

@PurplePeony: Thank you! That's a great tip about feeding her right before I go into the airport!

@blackbird: Yes, just super nervous! :)

@meredithNYC: SO looking forward to two full nights of sleep! And maybe a drink or two! :)

@Pirouette: That's encouraging that she took some even though she wasn't a big bottle feeder since we're kind of in the same boat!

She will be fine, honestly! As hard as it is, try to focus on the good things about being away - like having a bit of freedom

I started taking short trips away when my daughter was about that age and she's always done great. Even now at 2.5 she doesn't get stressed out when we're gone - just enjoys her time with grandparents or babysitter.

I had a trip when LO was 9 months and at the time she would only take milk from me, so i was terrified! she starved herself for a while, but then once nighttime rolled around and she realized I wasn't coming home, and she was willing to take whatever DH would give her. I felt terrible (she spent about an hour pointing to the door and saying "mama mama" before giving in), and she didn't sleep great, but everyone got through it. and this was a baby that literally would not take milk from a bottle or sippy, so if she could get through it, your LO will be absolutely fine!!

also, i pumped and dumped so as not to have to deal with the travel of the milk.

good luck!!

It will be fine! My first time away from DD was when she was 4 months, and I also had to travel when she was 8 months, 9.5 months, and the week after her first birthday. It's never easy but @Corduroy: is right that it's harder on mama than on baby! The first couple trips I took, I never saw any difference in her when I got back -- I'm sure she noticed while I was gone but it didn't seem to stick with her. The most recent time, she seemed super happy to see me, more so than usual, but didn't hold a grudge or anything. I was most worried about whether she'd decide to wean because it was the longest I had been away and she was a little more than a year old, but she was just as enthusiastic as ever when I got back.

If you're flying -- I never had issues with TSA, I just told the first person inside the screening area (not the ID checker but the next one) that I had breast milk in my bag and they were fine. One guy made me take it out so he could see it, but that was all.

One thing I always tried to do was pump as much as I could either right before I left or in the car on the way to the train/airport (if DH was driving me) so I wouldn't have to pump while traveling and could leave as much fresh milk for DD as possible.

Make sure to get a small squeeze bottle so you can bring a little dish soap for washing bottles/pump parts, and ziplocks for transporting the used parts on the way home. I forgot both on my first trip and had to make an emergency Target run!

Take a deep breath, trust that it'll all be fine, and good luck!

Hugs! I left LO for the first time around that age. In my experience traveling was harder on me than on LO. Make a list of all your pump parts, keep your ice pack as cold (pack with ice and dump pre-security) as possible if you're flying so TSA doesn't hassle you. Figure out where you can pump at your destination. Rental cars tend to have no tinting.

I'd bet your baby will drink the formula. If you really want LO to drink BM you could overnight your day one milk for arrival on day 2. I personally don't really think it's worth the time and effort, just an option.

In January I'm going on a 48 hour work trip and leaving DD at home. She'll be 9.5 months and the longest I've ever been away from her is 6 hours. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I'm so nervous that she's going to feel abandoned and wonder where the heck I went :( I'm trying to spend a few afternoons away from her before I go, but I need to save all my pumped milk for my trip and I don't want to use it before then.

I also have a lot of worries about her feeding while I'm gone since I won't have enough pumped milk in my stash to give her just breast milk so she'll have to take it mixed with formula, which she hates. Although I'm sure at some point she'll be hungry enough to just eat whatever is there.

Gah! I guess I just need to hear some good stories about leaving babies for the first time!
