@Raindrop: I actually just dropped a bunch of $ to make my first quilt for DH - it's a very simple one though, ha! My first love will always be apparel.

@Raindrop: When looking through my stash, I found a bunch of squares I used to make a zig zag quilt a couple of years ago. I'm really excited to destash and pass them along to someone else who can love them too!

@avivoca: I think that sounds great! I think the pattern thing sort of sounds kind of like a sew along? (aka doing the pattern together). That would be fun! I did a few of those a long time ago. Posting pictures of how we all progress in a pattern and asking questions and tips as we go along.

Sorry I have been slacking I'll try to get a elfster thing going in the coming week or so. :D

What if we did a different type of swap every quarter? This time it could be quilting fabric, next time a yard it two of apparel fabric and a link to a free pattern or something.

@Raindrop: yep I used elfster to organize gift swaps on here and it works really well. I sew mostly home dec & apparel so charms wouldn't get me very far :P

@scg00387: Oh interesting thanks! :) We can do a non-quilting fabric exchange in the future... but I only have quilting fabric... lots of it... haha. I need to expand my fabric wheelhouse though.

http://ellisonlane.com/2012/02/how-to-host-fabric-swap.html

I'm stealing the rules from here. Let me know if this works for everyone. I'm changing the rules just a tiny bit. The one I'm pointing to has a centeral person collecting everything and passing it out. I think it will be fine if we just mail our fabric to each other. :D

I think this might work better because if someone new joins we can just send them the fabric swap directly. Just a thought we could decided together if this is okay.

I wouldn't mind at all being a central person for distrubution either. :)

1. For swapping 5″ charm squares, each person will purchase 1 yard of fabric and cut it into 5″ charm squares. 1 yard = 56 charms. (I recommend buying 1.25 yards- never hurts to have a little extra in case you make a cutting mistake.)

2.Choose a fabric that has a small print suitable for an 5″ charms. Scale of the print is very important as smaller works better in this case. A larger print has a larger repeat and you want each charm to have enough of the print showcased on each piece. If you are swapping larger cuts of fabric such as 10″ squares, you could have a larger scale print.

3.Fabric should be designer label, 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabric. No Hancocks, Joanns or Michael’s fabrics. For a fabric swap, the fun is receiving quality fabric that you might not be able to pick up around the corner.

4. Fabric must be new and unwashed and must come from a smoke free environment.

5.Before mailing, cut your fabric into 5″ x 5″ charm squares. Press your fabric before cutting. 1 yard = 56 charm squares (5″ x 5″.) Here’s a great tutorial on how to cut fabric into charms by Elizabeth Hartman.

6. Put your fabric in a ziplock bag and include an index card with your name and email address.

7.Upload pictures of your fabric to the swap Flickr group and include the name of the fabric, designer, etc. This ensures that there are no duplicate fabrics chosen and allows everyone to find out more about the fabrics in case they would like to order more once they have received their charms.

I think of we don't have 56 people we could just send something like 4 charms to each other instead of just one. (aka get quarter yards instead of 1 yard) :) I have a lot of fabric so maybe this is a terrible suggestion.

Please write if you have a better idea. I normally do block swaps but I'm kind lazy these days.

I'm interested too! But I'm afraid I don't have any cutting tools - like the self-healing board or the rotary cutter - so be prepared for either a fat square or a store bought charm pack/jelly roll/etc.

@lil owl: I'll happily swap with you <3

Anyone interested in a fabric swap?

We could swap by the yard, half yard, quarter yard, or charm.

Charm swaps are the most common because you buy one yard of fabric and swap for about 56 charms (5x5 inches) and make something interesting with that. Just wanted to put this out there. :D
