Facebook is a tough one for me. I don't post many pics of myself or LO on it as some HBers have seen. My MIL likes to right click save pics, so that's why I stopped posting them altogether. I have pics of LO on a private Shutterfly site for this reason. I made it clear on a recent visit that I don't want pics taken off of FB without my permission. I used the strangers taking blogger pics defense on it. Clear boundaries is how I handled the FB issue.

@JoyfulKiwi: so, why is that your policy? I'm having trouble figuring out exactly why that bothered me. Was it because it was that particular person that did it? Was it because my sister saw it and then she knew something about my life I hadn't publicized? Am I afraid now that weirdos know what my kid looks like and will steal her cuz she's so cute? (That's not it, I explored that).

@mrbee: I could ask her, but she's like a goldfish. I would have no reason to believe she would ever remember. She's not malicious or mean or anything, she's just.... Like that. Maybe I will ask her. You never know.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: frustrated that my sister saw. I guess it didn't really amount to anything. It has the potential to turn into some sort of insanity with my family, but I guess in that case, I'm a grown woman and I can let my MIL babysit if I want, dammit! If my family wants to make an issue out of everything, that's their issue, not mine.

I have never given them SPECIFIC direction NOT to post pictures on social media. I just have an unspecified aversion to it...

@JennyD: I would be upset, but would also evaluate the situation: did you ever voice that you didn't want photos of your child(ren) on social media?

If you're as close to your ILs as you say you are, I don't see any reason why you can't mention your concerns.

Are you upset that your estranged sister saw the photos, or that a photo was shared in general?

We do have Facebook accounts, but we're very very selective about putting info about our son on them - particularly his picture. My MIL overstepped our Facebook photo wishes several times - it was a mess. My thoughts: I'd be talking nicely with MIL and SIL that you guys don't have social media for a reason and ask them to please not post photos/updates about your daughter. Most people don't think twice about things on Facebook, so sometimes you really need to be direct in what's ok with you.

We have a blanket policy of no LO on Facebook. I have a Facebook and use the private chat function to send pictures but nothing goes on my wall. Having a Facebook, I think, helps enforce the no LO on Facebook rule.

that is frustrating because it is not like she posted a pic you took and sent her (in which case you might have to decide who and what pics to send). There is really not much you can except ask people not to post pics on facebook if it bothers you.

I feel like - with social media the way it is now - you can't control what other people do, no matter how much you try.

I hate facebook for this reason. I got rid of mine a few months ago. I recently got back on but only use it to see photos of my friends' LOs that they choose to post. I have nothing on it and have no intention of posting anything on it.

Background info:
- I don't have Facebook
- I don't speak with my siblings/parents on a very regular basis; we're just not that close right now
- I am close with my in-laws, especially MIL

A few weeks ago, my MIL was watching my LO because she was sick. I received a text out-of-the-blue from my sister. She asked if my LO was sick. I said yes, why do you ask. She replied that she didn't look very good. I asked where she saw her. She said my SIL had posted a picture of her on FB. I asked what she was wearing in the pic, and my sister described the outfit I had dressed her in that day.

I was a bit upset. I just don't like the idea of everyone knowing my business all the time.

Thoughts?
