@yerpie110: I got through it!! My super awesome Mom took the day off work to drive me the 20 min. there and back and sat with me in the waiting room. I still feel super woozy and cognitively slow. Thanks for the support. We totally hijacked this thread :silly:

@yerpie110: Wow that is so ridiculous. Its not like the baby's head is big because of putting on extra fat. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who had this happen. I wasn't even close to failing my 1-hr either. There is so much ridiculousness sometimes with the childbirth/maternal care industry. I'm sure insurance companies and malpractice suits don't help the cause.

I was just on the cut off 139/139 for my 1 hour and had to take the 2 hour. (We don't have 3 hours here). I was also
quite peeved and asked my doc if it was really necessary. She just explained how it is "better safe than sorry" so I agreed. I passed the 2 hour test with no problems. Good luck to you!

@JessyMess: I just saw your other post, must of missed it! I had to take the 3 hr for the same exact reason - dd1 was measuring large, particularly her head. Guess what? Turns out, she just has a really big head (thanks to DH)!! It was also the MFM ob who insisted I do it, and I was annoyed my regular OB at the time just followed her lead. For dd2, I had a different OB, and when I told her my experience, she said that was absolutely ridiculous and couldn't believe that happened. She said maybe if I was close to the 1 hr test threshold she could see why they would ask me to do that just to be sure, but I was not even CLOSE and she said that there is no evidence that GD is related to a large baby when the 1 hr is passed by such a huge margin. I did end up with a csection for my first, but it wasn't related to her size or head, it was for other reasons.

Sorry, that totally sucks!! :bummed:

@snowjewelz: Weird.

Anyway, for anyone who finds this later, I did the 1-hr at 20 weeks in my second pregnancy since I had GD the first time. Predictably, I failed and I refused the 3-hour because it made me feel awful the first time. My midwives were okay with treating me as if I had GD and I monitored my blood sugar and followed the GD diet for the next 20 weeks. I only gained 23 pounds and I've lost it all. My baby was born vaginally at 41w4d at 7 lbs, 3.2 oz.

@yerpie110: I didn't get along with the dr at MFM. He thinks my baby is too big and will need a c-section. I told him I'm not concerned because I can see the baby is tall and has a large head like my firstborn. I told him I'm not coming back to monitor the growth of my baby because its growing exactly the same way my son did. He called my midwife and said he doesn't recommend a birth center birth because I'm at high risk for GD and will need a C/S, so they have to cover their butts and send me for a 3 hour. It makes no sense. Doctor is an ass.

What was the reason you had to have the 3-hr after passing the 1-hr? I'm curious to know. I've googled the dilemma and can't find anyone that's been in the situation.

@JessyMess: ugh, that sucks! Why do they want you to take the 3 hour? I'll be honest and say part of me regrets giving in and thinks I should have stood my ground more, but then I guess it was good to know for SURE that I didn't have GD? I just really hated the test and that drink made me feel so terrible. Plus the dr office miscalculated the time and I had to wait an extra 10 minutes at the end before I could eat, and that was brutal :silly: What I can say is it didn't happen the second time around and for that I'm grateful! Hope the 3 hr isn't as bad for you!

I failed with 136 on the one hour test and ended up failing the three hour test. It really is important to know for sure if you have it but I totally sympathize about the toddler. I have to take my 18 month old to all of my appointments and it makes them so much more stressful.

Our clinic/lab uses 130 as the cut off, so you'd be 11 points off. There has to be a cut off somewhere and this is an important condition to diagnose. Sorry you have to take the 3 hour though.

I failed by 1 point during my last pregnancy. I asked if there were any alternatives to the 3 hour test because the glucose drink always makes me sick. They had me do 3 different blood tests over the next couple of weeks they looked at blood sugar in a couple of different ways (clearly I'm not a medical professional to tell you exactly what). The results were good and that was the end of it for me.

I barely failed the one hour and then barely failed the three hour too. I, like you, was upset (actually more like pissed). I was going to skip it all but I didn't and I ended up needing meds for over night /fasting. What I had to realize and accept was that it wasn't "my fault" and I didn't "do" anything wrong.....it's really the placenta and the hormones

Sounds like you and the toddler may have to post up for a few hours at the hospital.

I barely failed my 1 hr, and I ended up failing my 3 hr. It got so bad I needed to be on medication. When it comes to my health and that of my pregnancy I'd rather be overseen than have untreated issues. Not to say that it does not suck to have to go back. I was super annoyed about GD since I had little risk factors.

I had my 1 hr glucose screen on Friday at 4:15pm, and I found out I failed it by 1 measly point (140/139). One of the nurses called today and told me I need to take the 3 hour test (of course it was not my favorite nurse. Her attitude rubs me the wrong way and makes me feel crappy about myself, so that didn't help the situation), and I pushed back because I was pretty upset. I understand that it's very important to diagnose GD. I also think that 1 point is a little ridiculous, and that doing the test so late in the day helped set me up to fail. I don't have a babysitter for my toddler (family is all 2 hours away) and my husband can't take time off of work, so I asked if there are any other options (I offered to just test my levels and adjust my diet), and I haven't heard back. I have a feeling they're going to say "nope, too bad for you."

Anyone have a similar experience and advice or suggestions?
