I haven't been there (yet) but I wanted to offer the suggestion of being really up front about your concerns when you are setting up an appointment with the nutritionist. I was incredibly worried about going to the dentist after a long gap and I literally told everyone I came in contact with while setting up the appointment and when I actually went in. They made sure to set me up with extremely caring people who made sure to avoid the scolding that I was really concerned with too. Hopefully your doctor and/or the receptionist at the office will be helpful in guiding you towards someone who will be great with you.

Good luck!!!

Hugs!

I've had it with all three of my pregnancies even though there's no history of diabetes in my family and I consider myself to be a healthy person. With my first, I had 3 numbers that were elevated during the 3 hour test. With my second, I had 2. With this pregnancy, I had 1.

It's actually been the easiest this time around. I just had to embrace it. Meeting with the nutritionist was the best thing I could do because she took my BMI and calculated how many servings of carbs I could have at each meal. One serving = 15 grams. So for my BMI:

Breakfast: 1.5 servings of carbs
Snack: 1.5 servings
Lunch: 3.5
Snack: 1.5
Dinner: 3.5
Snack: 1.5

The hardest part is that I can't have fruit in the morning. I eat almond butter on whole wheat toast, lots of cottage cheese, beef jerky, nature valley protein bars, peaches and berries with lunch, salads, scrambled eggs in a tortilla, and no sugar added fudgesicles. I also add Mio to my water for flavor. I stay mildly active by walking every day or playing outside with my LO's. It's kept the weight gain down (13 pounds at 34 weeks).

The nutritionist I saw really didn't care what I ate in the past just what I'm eating for the rest of my pregnancy. With my second pregnancy, I hardly ever took my blood sugar at home and was kind of laid back about my GD diagnosis but when DD was delivered, she ended up breaking her collarbone which my new OB said was most likely from the GD. With my first, I never ate enough carbs and I was SO hungry all the time that it was almost like a crash diet that I couldn't stick to. Anyway, it's not so bad as long as you eat enough. I have to stay away from cereal, baked goods, rice and white bread but otherwise I'm okay.

Good luck meeting with the nutritionist!

I had GD and was able to manage it with diet alone. My baby was born weighing 7 lb., 10.8 oz. I was very, very angry at first, but the diet wasn't too bad. The nutritionist probably won't be angry at you either. I didn't need to see one since I was familiar with the diet (my husband is diabetic), but if I had a few high numbers, my midwife just asked me about it. I also wrote down everything I ate with my numbers, so I could pinpoint what my triggers were.

I was really upset and angry when I found out about my GD at 6 weeks. I didn't want to eat healthy for 34 more weeks....ahhh! It actually was very manageable through diet and exercise and it taught me a lot about food!

Good luck!

I had GD for both my pregnancies, and I'll admit it wasn't easy at first. I was able to control it with diet both times, but it required a lot of strict eating on my part. I almost dreaded it the second time around, but I made the best out of it and learned a lot about my body.

The key for me was to keep my metabolism high throughout the day. I ate often, pretty much every hour or two. During my meals I tried to keep my carb intake light and focus on eating protein and vegetables. Even vegetables have sugars, and I decided to allocate all of my carb intake towards the healthy stuff. About an hour after a meal, I would be able to indulge. Sometimes that meant just having my glass of milk for the day and some fruit. Other times it meant eating a slice of cake or bowl of ice cream.

The greatest benefit (besides making my LO stay nice and healthy) was learning how to eat better, which limited my weight gain to about 15 lbs both times. Both of my kids were born without any issues related to GD, and they were actually on the smaller side (not exactly normal for GD babies).

Hope your meeting with the nutritionist goes well. Best of luck!

It's ok. I had GD, but I was able to control it with diet alone. It's not just sugar but also watching your carb intake. I worked with a nice nutritionist and that helped. There are lots of us on HB who have had it, so feel free to ask questions.

ETA: I should also say it depends on what your trigger foods are. I know for me that was rice, and I love rice. I was able to eat fruit and even some desserts but I needed to make sure that I had lots of protein. I think they worst aspect was taking the blood sugar levels. Good luck!

I was diagnosed at around 26 weeks, just before Canadian Thanksgiving in October. I was devastated. Tears galore! I didn't even have any of the risk factors.
The prenatal clinic I was going to had a diabetes clinic I had to attend every two weeks. I had a growth ultrasound at each appointment. I was weighed, had my BP taken, and discussed numbers with a dietician in front of the rest of the group (not private unless you requested). I have white coat BP, and having it taken in front of a bunch of strangers didn't help. Once that was done, I had to meet with one of the endos (whichever was free from a floating group of doctors). Then I saw a perinatologist to discuss the u/s. Because I never saw the same doctor 2 appts in a row, continuity of care was severely lacking. My numbers might have been good in the eyes of a doctor one week, but not good enough for a different doctor the next time. I found that really hard to cope with. It was hard any given week to know whether I was doing well! All that being said, I received good care. I will go back because I like my OB/GYN who works out of that practice.
In Canada, it seems like they don't do tablets for GD. I had to go on insulin for my fasting numbers and for lunch. I ended up forgetting my lunch dose more often than not, and could still kept my lunch numbers under control - I think the week they based the prescription on was just a bad week. I found the insulin needles much less painful than the blood sugar test pokes! I thought it would be awful, but once I'd done it for a few days, and got over the fact that I was sticking a needle in my side, it was fine. I could even relax a little because I knew the insulin was keeping my numbers low. I had reduced sugar ice cream as a snack quite a few nights :)

One nice thing about the whole experience was that I only gained 15 lbs! That weight is gone, and I just want to lose extra weight now...
I had my follow up glucose test at 4 months, and I was so nervous that it would be bad, but results were normal. I thought maybe because I needed insulin, that I had undiagnosed pre-pregnancy diabetes or something, but it wasn't the case.
All this to say that I know what it feels like to go through this. It's not fun, and I struggled with the scheduling of my day and figuring out what to eat. I remember I went to a grocery store by myself one afternoon and was almost I tears in the produce section because I couldn't just buy a banana or some grapes - it felt so unfair that even healthy foods were restricted!
If you need someone to talk to, message me!
(Sorry for the long reply!)

It's totally manageable. I also thought it was the end of the world. My dietician wasn't great (sorry!). But I will agree it's just learning a better (balanced) way of eating and really will help with pregnancy weight gain. I didn't love checking my blood, but it wasn't the end of the world. I had to add glyburide in once per day because my fasting remained an issue.

You will totally be fine! I know it's shocking at first and I threw a pity party when I got diagnosed but it turned out to be not that bad at all. There's a lot you can still eat and I credit the GD with keeping me healthy and not giving into an all-ice cream diet at the end. :-)

Also this is not your fault - it just happens to some people and has nothing to do with the way you've been eating so far, at least that's my understanding.

In my limited experience with nutritionists, they aren't generally scolds. The ones I've met were personable and friendly, much more like the nice neighbor lady next door (the one who doesn't gossip, has helpful advice, and always compliments you in a genuine way) than the Soup Nazi.

I had GD, and while it feels like the end of the world at the time, it really isn't. I was diagnosed at 10 weeks (really I was just pre-diabetic) so I dealt with it for a LONG 29 weeks. If you have questions about food or medications (I ended up doing insulin at the end) I'm glad to offer info or advice.

I was lucky because the nutritionist I met with was very cool and reassuring and made it clear it wasn't anything I did and this isn't the end of the world. You'll have to monitor your carb intake at every meal. No fruits or juices for breakfast, add protein to your meals.

The blood testing part sucks - don't get me wrong. But know it is only temporary and your blood sugar will go back to normal as soon as you give birth. Hopefully your GD can be controlled with diet alone. I needed a little insulin every night but that stabilized me and made me feel better. Best of luck and if you have any questions, wall me!

PS - one great thing is that it really helped me control my weight during the pregnancy. After I was diagnosed, I only gained a few more pounds during the rest of the pregnancy.

So, apparently on top of EVERYTHING else with this pregnancy, I have gestational diabetes as well. I just got the test results back, but my appointment(s) to deal with it aren't until next week, so I was looking for a little input. (The nurse who called with the results gave me no information at all.)

First off, I would assume that between now and then just lay off the sugar? I admit, I have way too much normally. I feel like since they didn't try to rush me into a sooner appointment or make a point of telling me what not to eat, it'll be okay to still eat carbs and things, just maybe not the donuts?

They said 2 of my 4 numbers were elevated. Anyone know what this refers to? Is it maybe better that only 2 were? Or bad that it wasn't just 1?

And can I just get some reassurance that this isn't a huge terrible problem, and that it'll turn out fine with proper management? Honestly I feel super guilty about how badly I eat (I have self-diagnosed but almost definite Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder), so this is probably a good thing in that it will give me the motivation I need to get my butt in gear on that. But I'm also pretty terrified of meeting with the nutritionist. I have issues with getting "in trouble" (semi-abusive childhood situation), and like I said I eat terribly, so I know they won't be happy with me. Depending on the personality of the nutritionist, it could go badly. So someone please just tell me that it will be fine, and it might even be better for her in the long run since I'll have to eat better, and maybe this will help me establish better eating habits for good, etc. And some commiseration from others who have been here wouldn't go amiss as well.

But hey, at least I finished my Starbucks white mocha (minutes) before they called, so I don't have to choose between finishing and feeling guilty or wasting it and being sad.
