@Cait1: Well that is unbelievable and I am so sorry it happened to you! I too tell my son to not bother bugs and they wont bother him but he too is THREE YEARS OLD. This woman clearly needed to get a life. I probably would have walked away bc I am bad at conflict but my DW would have gone off on her in totally inappropriate way I am certain ;) So, I think your moderate approach was good. There are a lot of crazies in the world........

OMG. That is ridiculous.

Like, completely and totally insane. I wouldn't give it another thought.... I probably would've said the same thing as you. And if she kept going on & on, I would have told her she was being hysterical. Or, maybe you should've found another bug to kill in front of her dumb face.

Sorry this happened to you - makes me ragey.

F that lady. The lunatics come out at town festivals - I swear!!

We were at touch a truck and this woman put her 7-9 year old up in the dump truck. And sat and sat and sat and sat... like we are talking 5 minutes. Finally my 2 year old was losing his mind. I turned to the people behind me who gave a sympathetic look. A dad a few people back said "Miss, we've got a long line here." She looked back and ignored him. He went over an tapped her on the shoulder/back (She was up in the truck on the steps). She turns around and SCREAMS "GET YOUR F----ING HANDS OF OF ME!!!!!" like he was murdering her. I looked at her and said "woah woah woah.... Little ears are listening, this is a family event" She proceeded to berate me as I stood there in shock saying nothing and finally dragged her kid over to a police officer to complain about me. Needless to say, she was nuts and the cop did nothing. SO yeah, I feel ya. I replayed that in my mind for ages....

That lady is a loon. I might have done the same thing she did the opposite way: “Don’t worry, buddy, you’re young and just learning, there are SOME PEOPLE who don’t understand that and behave ridiculously in public, embarrassing themselves...” etc. But I’d try to put it out of your head, she was just being an a$$hole.

My DD *might* have stomped on one of the class caterpillars 🐛 in pre-K a couple of years ago. They were waiting for them to start their chrysalis, why they were out on the concrete on the play ground who knows. One teacher was very distraught over this and I might have chuckled a little when she told me the dramatic story. Was it a good choice for her to kill it, no. Did we discuss it later, yes. But not gonna lose sleep over it. That lady sounds like a real pill.

Wow. I'm so sad that girl is being raised in that kind of atmosphere. I would have given the lady serious side eye, decided it was snack time and high tailed it out of there. I don't have the time or energy for people like that. I'd also be bitter that I had to pull my kid out of the fun situation, even if just until she cleared the area. I probably wouldn't succeed at keeping my mouth shut and have said "It was a MOTH!"

Unfortunately, I would’ve burst out laughing. That lady is a trip! If my child wasn’t upset about it. I wouldn’t have really addressed it except to laugh cause really “terrible people who kill butterflies”??!?!!? That’s a whole lot of crazy talk. You are definitely not a bad parent and your baby boy is a wonderful kid. Try to find the humor in it.

Sounds like she was just trying to get attention! Hopefully people just ignored her. I’m sorry you had to go through that. I mean it was a moth and he’s just a little kid.

So weird. There are some crazies out there and I'd definitely just think she was one of them. If I were feeling feisty I probably would have called her on it. But most likely I'd just ignore. Sorry your son had to hear that nonsense.

Last week at the farmers market at this bread place I asked my son if he wanted a blueberry muffin and the old lady next to me then purposely grabbed the two remaining blueberry ones, and then same with the next flavor I suggested. Even the guy working there said she was rude but not til after she left. Some people are just nuts.

Wow, that is absolutely ridiculous. I can see why you’re replaying it in your mind. I probably would too trying to come up with what I could have said to help that woman see what a ridiculous example she set for her granddaughter. A 3 year old accidentally (or even intentionally!) stepping on a moth is nothing compared to a grown woman berating people in public and calling a 3 year old “a bad person” Ugh, I’m angry for you. Hopefully your DS didn’t really notice

Wow that’s crazy! The lady I mean ... my son has definitely done stuff like that. She sounds like she definitely wanted a lot of weird attention. I’m not very confrontational so I might have just walked away but what you said was totally fine! Some people you can’t get through to though. Sorry this happened!

Hi all - need some input. Today, my husband and I took our 3 year old son to a fall festival - with a petting zoo, bounce house, apple picking, etc.

While standing in line at the bounce house, a moth landed next to my son and he stepped on it. I’m not really sure why and I told him “no buddy, don’t step on bugs.” He was otherwise behaving perfectly fine and waiting patiently in the line. A little girl in front of us (probably like 5 or 6 years old) told her Grandma that he killed it. This woman then begins to hug and loudly comfort her granddaughter (who wasn’t crying or super upset) by saying “I’m so, so sorry that happened hunny. That was a TERRIBLE thing for him to do.” I ignored it at first but she kept going and going. She finally says “There are good people in the world like us who plant flowers for the butterflies. And then there are BAD people in the world like that little boy who kill butterflies.”

WTF? At this point I said something like “excuse me, ma’am, but you’re being over the top and very rude. I think you need to calm down. He’s a 3 year old boy.” She then starts berating me saying that I’m a terrible parent and my son is a terrible kid.

The way she was talking about him felt very performative like she obviously wanted us, and the others around us, to hear it. What kind of person demonizes and shames a 3 year old like that? It was so bizarre and upsetting and I can’t stop replaying it in my mind. Look, I don’t love that he stepped on the moth. But he’s a sweet, well mannered, gentle kid 99.9% of the time who loves animals and other children.

How would you have handled this situation? Is my kid some kind of budding psychopath and I just don’t realize it?
