@macintosh: we were going to put our younger one into a 3s program. I can ask for a refund until August 1. If there is no physical school, I’m definitely not going to pay for virtual for a 2.5 year old. No way

My other one is supposed to start K at a different private school. We’ve already prepaid the years tuition. We could just be totally screwed; they haven’t sent any information regarding what 20/21 looks like. But I definitely do not want to pay an ungodly amount of money for my 5 yo daughter to be parked in front of an iPad

@DesertDreams88: the Dallas superintendent just gave a press conference about this. He didn’t give a lot of details - as they are still figuring it out - but said highly unlikely things will be normal as before. We’re in a neighboring district and expect to be on the same page as they are. I don’t think they’ve said anything public yet in our district but they sent a parent survey about it that was very vague. One option mentioned was fully virtual school for families who want that.

@DesertDreams88: good idea! the only other insight I have is this. I asked the school registrar - while registering for Kinder - if they had any idea what full day kinder would look like next year since they require tuition for it. She had no idea and passed me off to the superintendent, who of course didn't email me back. There's clearly no plan for this yet.

We haven’t heard it from the governor or school administration, but simply because school lunch needs to be served differently when kids go back, the format of the day will have to be different (CDC is recommending meals be served in classrooms)—this is the only formal change I know of thus far. I think it’s just widely assumed school will look different.

And of course this is nothing concrete and there has been backlash: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wgrz.com/amp/article/news/education/local-education-advocates-concerned-with-cuomos-reimagine-education-comments/71-2751fe76-ca5e-4d5a-b323-21ef4ed10345

Can I get a "roll call" on state governors or large-school-district-superintendents admitting that K-12 learning next year will most likely be very different? In other words, which states and cities have admitted it publicly so far? Links appreciated, I'll add mine in another reply.

If you can believe it, a school I know of is requiring teachers to submit their calendar of lesson plans for the first quarter by May 22nd, but ideally they want the entire school year....😆😆😆

I haven't heard anything about fall yet, although they just cancelled the rest of the year (MD). I cancelled their summer camps, working at home with distance learning is tough but manageable (K and 3rd) and DH and I take turns going in when we have to (we are both engineers who have hands on work + virtual stuff). I have been pulling hours on weekends and after the kids are in bed to manage 40/week, I think that will just have to continue until something changes!

I’m also in OH and torn about what to do for the fall. I’m on a planned unpaid extended maternity leave until Nov so I don’t think we’ll send him back to school since by Nov everybody will likely be back to distance learning. He goes to a small Montessori school and I have no idea how they would sanitize in because the whole classroom is tons of tiny manipulatives.

Once I go back to work in NOV (probably from home) we’re considering either hiring a nanny (in a nanny share with 1 kid his age) or reducing my hrs to 6 a day so I can spend 9-12 with the kids and get some educational stuff in for my oldest. Nanny would be more expensive that 2 in daycare but would allow him some socialization and option 2 would save us a big chunk of change every month and relieve me of any stress of him getting sick (I’m being super cautious since he has Asthma and we have a newborn)

We are starting my older two at the same private school next year. While I hate that these are the conditions they're starting a new school in, our plan is to have this be their long-term school, and it's competitive to get in, so we don't want to let go of the spots. Also, agree with @Andrea: and @HappyBaker: that they may be able to be more flexible in reopening. They actually just emailed us with a survey about our willingness to start school 6 weeks early (normally here in NY we start mid-September), on the theory that we'd get some school in person before any forecasted second wave hits in the fall. Interesting. I do appreciate the creative thinking. Obviously depends on what "school" looks like but most of me is thrilled at the idea of having them start ASAP.

@HappyBaker: We’re contemplating something similar for homeschooling my oldest who is supposed to start kindergarten. I feel like I’m drowning with work and having the kids home now, but I worry we’d be in worse shape if I was trying to work, stay on top of the kids, and get her through virtual learning (even a few days a week). I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how well she’s picking up the math and reading we’re working on together this spring...and I’m keeping the idea of keeping her home in my back pocket, depending on how our school’s plans shape up and how we think she’d do with them.

My oldest just switched to private school and at first I was like there’s no way I’m paying tuition for virtual school next year. But agreed with @Andrea: that the small class sizes will make it easier for them in general. Also we’ve been super impressed with the individualization they’ve given each student through the past 7 weeks, so I think we’re leaning towards “sending” her there whatever that looks like. My middle guy is supposed to start K in the fall at our town school but if that ends up being some weird virtual / in person combination I might just keep him home and “homeschool” him. In quotes because I’d still be trying to work from home so I’d probably just focus on the bare minimum of reading, writing and math. My youngest is in daycare and he’s kind of the wild card! Having him home would make everything a lot harder but like other threads have been discussing I’m just not sure if I’ll be comfortable with what daycare will be like.

@macintosh: My kids attend a small private school in NY. Right now, my thinking is that its small size would be helpful in re-opening. There’s already small class sizes so social distancing would be a lot easier than in bigger schools. As for virtual, I would only consider a switch because it’s an immersion school and we do not speak the primary language of instruction at home so my kids are probably falling behind with distance learning. Not sure if I would switch them to another private (probably not possible with admission deadlines way past) or public though.

At least here (NY, in a harder hit county) it’s all speculation right now so I haven’t given it much thought. Like the rest of this, I’ve taken it one day at a time (or more like one 2-week period at a time). The only known is that school will look different. I’m optimistic that local and state leadership will be thoughtful about this.

Thanks everyone for commenting. It's nice to hear your perspectives. A couple of other things were brought up in a Facebook group that had me thinking.

1. Families with children of different ages that go to different schools within one district. How is a family supposed to handle each child's individual days on and off in terms of before/aftercare and distance learning? I can't imagine the nightmare coordinating all that with 2 working parents.

2. Private/parochial schools. Is anyone re-thinking enrolling their child in a school like this considering the extra cost and possible lack of full time instruction? My brother has already been laid off from the parochial school he works for so I imagine this was a consideration. Also he tells me that his school gets about half their students from government funded vouchers, and the state just cut the education budget.

Agreed. I don't understand how this is supposed to work. Also I'm confused about how my insanely high taxes that I've always been willing to pay because we have great school and public services in my area are justified if this is the case. I am no longer benefiting from these services. My school age kid is doing the bare minimum and even that is pulling teeth. Before all of this she loved school and now she'll read but thinks the online stuff is so boring (and it is because I sit with her to do some of it). I have twins that start K next year and can't imagine starting them online because they won't already be in a rhythm. I wish schools/governors wouldn't even talk about it until there's an actually feasible plan in place. This just makes me question more and my stress level skyrockets. Also I am completely capable of WFH and we own rentals so DH has tons of flexibility, so realize we are in the 2% where this is "easier". Can't even fathom how this weighs on everyone with less flexibility.

@meadow: My DS2 had a runny nose, cough or both all winter and so did most of the baby room at daycare. They kept passing it to each other. Are they not going to be allowed at daycare for the winter then?

@muffinsmuffins: DS1 is in grade 1 and hates online learning. He is bored. So much of what they learn at this age is from the social interactions and working in groups.

@Littlebit7: I’m in this situation. We can really only do half to 3/4 of an average patients appointment virtually, the rest needs to be in person. Referral sources we use like physio, RMT, chiro are even worse off. I was supposed to get the biggest raise of my career April 1 and instead our clinic closed indefinitely. We will be able to reopen but we have no clue what our volume will be like. I saw some consignment stores and local places are doing virtual shopping where they literally hold up items for you to choose from and then deliver it...there’s no way that can be sustainable.

DW and I spoke about maybe me working part time and having her parents watch the kids but that theoretically means I would be physically going into work thus putting us all, including them, at more risk than if we could all be at home. My son is supposed to be starting grade one which is critical in our system for reading and we have lost so much progress with being at home. I’m worried about setting those core skills now that could affect him for his school career. No matter which ‘solution’ we come up with, there’s a roadblock it seems.

@muffinsmuffins: THIS!!!! I'm scared too....my kids (4yo) have runny noses from october - april....almost constantly. So how in the world will this work. I'm anticipating paying the full cost of daycare and maybe attending 25% of the time and struggling to cover the rest of the time that I am expected to work. I've tried to keep the light at the end of the tunnel as when we end this social distancing ..... but really gearing up for a miserable year+ juggling work & parenting like never before.

Ugh

I just can’t figure out what this looks like for the people in “the middle”. IE not essential but not able to WFH. Irrespective of income. Restaurants, retail, clerical, small shop/big business, factories. domestic workers, agriculture, in person sales, allied health that isn’t essential yet cannot be done via telehealth. How is this sustainable for the long run?? There is this giant swath of workers who literally are unable to work from home. As in, their jobs cannot physically be done in a remote setting. What are they supposed to do with their school aged kids that cannot be left alone??

I’m starting to get so stressed about this. I teach at a college and have students lined up for the fall but no way I can have my (would be) kindergarten at home even part time. It’s been near impossible since March. :meh:

@petitenoisette: regarding sick kids and leave: my colleague works in our vancouver office where there are only about 2000 cases for the entire province aka very lucky compared to most. He sent his son back to home daycare half days on Monday and there is a policy for mandatory 2 weeks out of daycare for ANY sickness including runny noses and the like. So I’m sure a policy like that in a fortunate area is going to be similar in any hard hit area as well :bummed:

It is a mess. I read some of the recap of the Dallas superintendent speaking on it (we’re not in that district but probably will be doing the same things). He also said probably a mix of distance and in person learning. He acknowledged a lot of the problems with it but did not put forth any solutions yet - I get they have to wait and see some but at least they recognize the challenges. He mentioned that most of his students have parents who work hourly jobs that can’t be done from home and so a mixed model will mean lots of kids left home alone. It will be so hard for so many and it seems like the achievement gap will get worse and worse. I feel so bad for the teachers who have to try to clean up this mess going forward. Just no good answers.

As a teacher I’m so conflicted by all this. On the one hand I do not want to return in the fall without major changes in place. On the other hand I assume students going two days a week means teachers go every day still so I have same concerns of where my kindergartener will then be.

Another possibility I saw was rolling closures (go to school 2-3 weeks, home doing remote learning for 1-2 weeks). I actually think that could be more doable, at least for teachers w kids.

Also to add to this I have to decide if my parents can continue to watch my younger two days a week as they’ve done since my oldest was born. My heart wants them to but my head doesn’t know how that is safe.

I’ve also been thinking about how it’s going to be such a mess in terms of sick leave - I constantly send my kids to school w a runny nose...I feel like we will all have to stay home so much more. Which maybe will mean less illness going around (aside from Covid) so perhaps good overall. And then my DH doesn’t even really get sick leave at all so I wonder if (hope) that will change too.
