My son was born small and was a slow grower and fell off the growth chart. Per one of the many doctor's we saw about it, the real concern - aside from him being small due to a medical issue - was that he wouldn't be able to withstand getting ill and that even a small cold could potentially land him in the hospital.

@Purpledaisy: I totally agree! My daughter will be 4 soon and she is 27 lbs. my son isn’t as tiny but still small (almost 6 and 40 lbs) but... someone’s gotta be small!

There’s nothing wrong with being small! My son is almost three and is consistently below the 1%... born full term, healthy, just small. He will be 3 in June and isn’t quite 24 lbs yet. My 6 year old daughter is only 35 lbs. Someone has to be on the top of the scale and the bottom. ❤️

@YogiRunner: that’s the thing though... there’s nothing wrong with being in the “measly” 3%. I mean the growth charts look the way they do because someone has to be at the top and bottom of the charts. It’s not like marks in school, there’s no reason to all be at the top, or be at the 50% etc. 🤷🏼‍♀️

My daughter was born in the 80th percentile in weight and over the course of her first year dropped down to the 12th. Every appointment we kept an eye on it and the doctor measured her milestones closely (which she was meeting). At her 1 year appointment, we did additional blood tests and her doctor sent us a to several specialists just to check. Endocrinology, Immunology, and Gastroenterology. Tests led us down a path to get an lower intestine scope and we did discover that she has celiac disease which was contributing to her slow growth. Since she has been on a gluten free diet she is moving up the growth curve again. She never had an gastro issues, her slow growth was the only indication that something was wrong. Her gastro doctor said many, many kids are being diagnosed this way. Not saying this is the case with your little one, but thought I would share my experience. We didn't have a history of it on either side of our families so it was a surprise, but it has straightforward treatment and has been much easier to accommodate than we expected.

@YogiRunner: I’ve had a 1%er for 6 years now. I don’t worry about his calories nearly as much and he’s starting to fit regular clothes better as the average kids are slimming out and getting taller! My son is 6 1/3 and not quite 40lbs but he’s not the smallest kid in his class and no one comments on his size (except me).

My LO is the same age and has dropped from the 70th%ile to the 13th over the first 5 months. Her head circumference is actually no longer on the charts. The doctor isn’t worried since she’s meeting her milestones and my neurologist friend told me that when kids drop like that but are meeting their milestones, they are likely just finding their intended genetic size. The women in both of our families are pretty small, and my mom had a small head, so I’m hoping that’s all it is.

Thanks everyone! They didn’t seem at all concerned with his overall development at his EI appointment, so that’s a big relief. I truly think he’s just a peanut, but I’d rather see him get much higher up that chart than a measly 3%!

@JennyLayneAZ: thank you so much! It’s just such a huge added layer of stress. She is at the hospital now and we’ll aggressively treat her illness. Doing all we can. And I go back to work next week. What a crazy month.

@YogiRunner: weird, it says it’s deleted, but I don’t think I deleted it :bummed:

Anyway, all his blood results came back normal, so it looks like he’s just small. They were more concerned about his height than weight. His weight has been in the 20th percentiles, but his height was dropping after starting out in only the 7th percentile...they thought it was odd since DH, DS1, and I are all tall. We have a follow up with the endocrinologist 4/9... I’ll try to remember to update here after that.

My doctor always says (about my tiny peanuts) that someone has to set the bottom of the curve. Of course, the trends are important, but I often fell off the curve as a child (I didn’t really grow until late high school, and now I’m above-average height.) She also said that she believes 6 months is when genetics really kick in, so babies often change their trend lines at that point.

My son's percentiles dropped from 95th+ percentile down to 33rd from age 0-1 and they were generally unconcerned. My daughter is 13 months and this is her chart. They had her come in for a weight check at 13 months and since she gained a pound (yay?) They were fine with it and said we'll just check in at 15 months.

My son has always been small. He hovered around 5% then fell off the curve for awhile then came back. He hit most of his milestones but ended up getting PT bc he was a late walker but not related to his size. I wouldn’t worry too much, I just think he’s a small kid. I’m small and my husband is tall but very thin.

He was normal weight at birth, I don’t know how he went all the way down to 3% and then even less! Makes me feel like I am doing something wrong. He was sick a lot this winter and spitting up from post nasal drip, maybe that has to do with it?

@Kitkat: thank you! I can’t get the link to work though, is it me?

@QBbride: up until now I was like meh, he’s almost rolling back to tummy, starting solids, etc, what exactly is the issue? I think I need to push for more answers about why they are concerned so I can listen better to my own gut.

@gotkimchi: they never mentioned a blood draw, but his 6 month well visit is soon so I’ll ask if that’s something they are considering.

@MamaCate: he was the same as LO1 who is now almost 3 and has always been built pretty solid (6 lbs 15 ounces at birth)... my family is smallish (my sisters and I have tiny wrists, it’s a running joke) and DH is average. I think I remember my newborn records showing me gaining like nothing in the first few weeks!

@Miss Ariel: thank you for the other thread! My gut is telling me he’s like your LO and just a small kid. Hoping we don’t have to go thru a ton of tests and worry to find that out though. I’ve been giving him the boob and bottle pretty much every hour today and he’s like, what are you doing lady.

We had similar issues too. Here’s the post where I asked for advice.

https://boards.hellobee.com/topic/failure-to-thrive

He did wind up as ftt after dropping to the 0%ile around 5 months. He’s 2.5 now, still in the 0%ile but doing fine. We ran a ton of tests with our dr and GI doctor. But everything came back normal. Turns out he’s just tiny, and doesn’t really like to eat.

@YogiRunner: how big was lo at birth? Are you and your partner on the larger or smaller side? I am kind of long and skinny and my kids were/are the same way. My ped seemed to think that this was connected. My second baby was in the 50s at birth but got down under 10th percentile in that 4-6-9 month range. He was a happy well functioning kid, our ped said he seems long and skinny like me and he eventually picked up weight. We weren’t off the growth chart but I get the worry with the dips! Good luck!

I have small children - if a child went from 55 to 50% no one would be concerned but when they’re under 5% doctors like to watch it. We never went to an endocrinologist but our dr checked blood for thyroid levels and celiac and that was it. Everything was fine

He sounds like my daughter, she kept falling down the curves until 6 months. She’s been on the same curve since then (3% on the WHO curve, 0.1% on the CDC curve). I took her to a pediatrician who was not concerned because she was/is meeting all her milestones. He asked me, “would you be here if she was a normal size?” and my answer was no. I had no concerns with her developmentally etc. Even now she is 3y9m and weighs 27lbs. Trust your gut, if he’s meeting his milestones I wouldn’t worry!!

LO is 5.5 months and has been at the 3rd and then down to the .5 percentile on weight for the past few months. Our ped referred us to EI and we had our intake visit and will get the full evaluation on Monday.

Up until I called my pediatric OT SIL and started googling, I didn’t feel too concerned. He is exclusively breastfed and starting to slowly take a bottle since I am going back to work PT soon. He is generally very happy and eats every 3 hours and is starting to eat cereal.

But Dr Google now has me concerned that this could have serious implications now or down the road.

Has anyone dealt with this or have insight?

And of top of everything else, my dog is dying and I’m solo parenting this week. Yesterday I came home to her in convulsions and had to rush her (with me two small children) to the ER. So, my head has been in a million places and I’m having a hard time truly wrapping my head around what services be could need and why.

THANK YOU!
