My MIL has been asking when her and FIL can babysit for the weekend. LO is 20 months, and they have never babysat him even once for a minute. We don't trust her not to get high while watching him, and their house is not toddler proof (lots of lead-based antiques lying around, although they just recently got a baby gate for their stairs), so we keep putting it off, saying we don't need a weekend "off" and like spending time with him on the weekends. In reality, I would so kill for a weekend with just the two of us! So no advice, just commiseration. :bummed:

@FaithFertility: oh that sounds like my mom. She keeps trying to take DS to the circus and the movies. Has been asking since he was two. He's four and I'm pretty sure he won't enjoy sitting still for two hours late in the evening. Also pretty sure she won't be the one putting him to bed when he has a meltdown from being tired and antsy. Some grandparents just don't remember what little kids are like.

My mom is very involved with LO. She watches him two mornings per week and has driven him around town, etc. and I would not be ready for her (or anyone else) to take him two hours away for the day. I hope you can find a solution that works for your family, but I totally understand your hesitation, especially since it sounds like your mom hasn't had your LO much one-on-one.

I wouldn't be comfortable either; can you say you'd love to have a girls day and the three of you go to the carnival? That way there is no negative.

Other than that I'm not sure how I'd deal with the rest of it! I'm super non-confrontational so I'd just come up with excuses each time she asked.

@FaithFertility: oh man. I totally agree I wouldn't be comfortable, but I would blame it on me and my LO, "oh I don't feel ready to have her that far", or "oh she's been such a quick runner these days". If she says you're being overprotective or she won't do that just laugh it off and let her think that!

DD is 2 in a few weeks I think my family has watched her/baby sat her 4 times since she was born! They never ask and when asked are always busy
I am not irritated by that but my mom is very one sided to a lot of things and seems to be the biggest issue

Her idea of helping me is on her time and when she wants to..
Ex: I can ask her to watch DD and she will agree but then come over complaining of a bad back and we come back because she has something to do?!?!

Also she is very over dramatic and says things like her brain is fried..getting..old can't remember shit

Will say she hears voices telling her to just move away

That all my husbands hears too
So much more I could add but I will stop there

She asked to take DD to a carnival 2 hrs away
I declined saying I am not ready for her to go that far with out me
She said I am being crazy and holding her back from joy with her grandma

I told her can we take it step by step you rarely watch her have never driven anywhere with her maybe start taking her places around town like children museums in which she stated I hate that place........drive her to the beach.....something

She says I am ridiculous ....problem is if I told her the truth and how her comments and lack of listening to me makes me nervous
She would call me crazy and say she never does these things?!?!

What do I do?
DH and I hear her say Ohhh my brain took me to where we lived 15 yrs ago driving I am so tired these days I passed up my development.....then we are supposed to say Ok mum take my DD on a road trip!?!?!
