Both of my sons had their birthdays during this quarantine time. We did not have parties, but my parents came by to give presents and eat cake with us on the porch. My parents have been isolated at home. The rest of the family has not been so isolated so we wanted to be careful!

I don't think it's an overreaction (also wouldn't be allowed in my state).

I feel like even if it were, the worst that would happen is missing one year of in-person birthday parties, amongst many future opportunities to celebrate with family. But what if you had it and that was an under-reaction and people got really sick. The cost of underestimating the virus is so much worse than the cost of overreacting when it comes to parties, so I really don't think there's an overreaction possible...

@LemonJack: @Bluemasonjar: I wasn't sure they'd be into it but they are SO pumped. They talk about it all the time and have written idea lists they keep adding to. And it's easier than a party. They're will be 5 and 7, for reference.

Thanks for the helpful and kind feedback everyone. I talked to a good friend today and when I asked if I was overreacting she said absolutely not, considering it would be 15 people.

I’m sure we will still see family in the coming weeks and months, just in smaller groups.

@MrsSRS: I love this! What a great idea. For our older daughter, I’ve ordered fun decorated cookies we’ll drop off at some of her friends houses, but I hadn’t thought further than that. Our younger daughter is still small enough that she doesn’t care as much.

@MrsSRS: I was just telling DH about yes days earlier. I think we are going to try it with DS as a reward but maybe we'll wait for his birthday.

We saw my in laws for Mother's Day and it was the first gathering of any sort we have been to. It was <10 people, everyone has been quarantining and we were outside spread apart. I am hoping to have the same people over with a similar set up for DS's birthday in July.

It is all about your comfort level in my opinion so I think you made the right choice.

I would have absolutely cancelled, but my province is still in full lockdown. That said, even once we aren’t, I don’t think I’d be ok with a group that large, especially if some of them are working out of the house.

I found this article useful: https://t.co/23caidjrNW

My kids have June birthdays. I have to go back to work next week so WE are risky for everyone. Instead of a party they are each getting a Yes Day. So they are brainstorming and planning all the things they will ask for and that I will say yes to. Mostly the requests look like various forms of pasta and screens and my undivided attention. And we will do dinner and dessert with my parents who are in our bubble. My kids are VERY excited about this.

@LemonJack: thanks for asking this. I think it is smart to think about the specific risks with who you would be in contact with and who they are exposed to so there is not a clear right answer.

We have a July birthday and had been tentatively planning for one of those indoor jumping places, which is clearly out. I am thinking about 2-3 friends and a parent each at the pool only but not sure how comfortable we would all feel...so I understand where you are coming from!

Thanks everyone. Our state has opened back up, so I don’t think it would be against any rules. My sister and her family are at home, so low risk. My MIL is a hairdresser though, and will start seeing clients again this week, so there’s more risk there.

Two of my kids have birthdays at the end of June and we are planning on having our parents over, plus my SIL and BIL. That being said, I don't think canceling is an overreaction at all and wouldn't judge anyone that cancels events.

We do see limited family. We saw family today that aren’t in our bubble and had the kids wear masks and made sure they wouldn’t touch (ages 3, 4, and 6.5). We were outside so the adults just stayed 6+ feet apart. I wouldn’t do a gathering of 15–you also risk getting fined depending where you are.

@LemonJack: We have a June bday and might have my parents over outside. My mom has been watching my kids once per week anyways during this time.

@gotkimchi: yes, agreed. That's why I said , "with other people that have been quarantining"... it's definitely a bummer bc most of my friends are married and have at least one person in the couple working out of the home.

@DesertDreams88: I’ve been thinking about this article and gatherings like op posted. That gathering in itself would be low risk but what if the adults in the situation are working? Ie in an office job or a hospital or grocery store etc. then it would not be low risk because you have to assume those people could test positive at any time correct?

I do not think that was an overreaction. I'm also delivering a fresh, new baby any day now so am full of irrational, hormonal emotional reactions :silly: However, the gathering as you have presented would be against stay at hime orders in our state.

From what I've read, outdoor gathering with other people that have been quarantining is not a signficant risk. I don't think momentary and incidental touching between a couple people is significant, either.

Genuine question here as there seems to be so much conflicting information and guidance. We had a family birthday party planned for our girls next weekend. It would have been 15 people, including us.

I told our family it was cancelled. If the weather is good, I suppose we could have had the party in our yard.

But, my girls would want to play with and touch their cousins, which is why I thought cancelling might be best.

That’s not an overreaction, right? We planned on instead doing zoom birthday parties with the family on their actual birthdays.
